Great video dude! Well spoken and straight to the point, no uneeded hype. This was really helpful, im goingnto check out some of your other videos for sure
Good video, you saved me a lot of money. I'm considering competition shooting. I probably would have made all the same mistakes, purely out of ignorance of how to get started. Good luck in all your endeavors.
I like the video, and I appreciate it. I am gearing up now for my first round of USPSA. Some of the rules in Production have changed, you can basically modify whatever you want on the gun aside from porting the barrel, slide milling and magwells. I think there was a few other's but no longer limited on internal visible modifications outside of the sights/grips
MR. MAGNOLE , you're correct on the rules changes 😉, my production rig now reflects those changes. Might be time for me to make an update to this video
There is a $365 half a day training on competition pistol training offered by the outdoor range facility that runs clubs etc. They teach rules and techniques. Do you think it’s worth it?
There is no minimum trigger pull weight in and division. For triggers you can't disable or remove any safeties. Basically when it comes to trigger work for Production guns you can do whatever you want as long as any external part (the trigger itself) and and safeties are intact. Any other parts, like springs, you can swap out; you can polish contact points, etc. Depending on what gun you have there are tons of different parts suppliers. For M&P the most prominent is Apex Tactical.
Not only is there an optic division they no longer have a 10 round limit, for some reason this division says as many rounds that will fit in a 140mm mag, for my CZ that's 17 rounds. Initially there was a 10-round magazine capacity limit, but from 1 February 2017 the magazine capacity limit was raised to any magazine that can fit a 140 mm USPSA gauge
Just getting started IDPA. Enjoyed you comments. Got a question. I have a ruger Mark IV Hunter 22 LCR. Can i shoot with IDPA and have a .22 cal. Or do I need to save up and get a larger competition firearm?
How do you get started in New York, I'm in lower Westchester and awaiting a CZ TSO 9mm. From the sounds of things I'm starting down the same road as you did, except I haven't purchased any other equipment till I get the gun
InkwellFoto go to USPSA.org and there will be a link somewhere to “find clubs near me.” Reach out to a club close to you and go to a Marc to observe and ask questions :)
Lex Green , either way will probably work, depends on your comfort level. I personally just a signed up and showed up with my gear. I got a USPSA membership too. Often times you won't need a membership to participate in a local club environment. You can reach out to the club or match director and see how they specifically like to do things. I've been to clubs where they require a meet and greet/orientation and others where you just show up.
2A Gunsmithing and Firearms Thanks for the info.. Been shooting about 3 yrs. now & my range is very static, this seems like the perfect way to Up the Fun & Skill factor.
Jaren Jarrell , I am not sure off the top of my head. In production division the blackstrap of the grip must be above the belt line and the gun enclosed. The slide can be exposed something like 1/2" below the ejection port. As long as that criteria is met is should be Ok.
jon mcleod , a ton better than stock! Gives you a little more length and grip surface for more positive mag seating. Essentially, if the rules allow for it, you should probably explore it because your competition sure is! ;)
The .40 caliber minimum for major power factor is only in the limited division per the USPSA rules. The open division has no minimum caliber for major power factor, which is why .38 Super is so popular with "race guns". Open division has the minimum 9 x 19, but no extra minimum for Major power factor. Never mind you mention that later, sorry.
Not Currently (as of 8/28/17). Stock barrel has plenty good accuracy at the ranges typically seen in USPSA. I may upgrade to an Apex barrel in the future, but I do not feel that swapping my barrel would improve things in a statistically significant way (enough to warrant $200)
yes and no. I did consider it, however decided against it because all my other pistols were in 9mm. Caliber consolidation and affordability was the name of the game.
Yup! The mag release can only extend the length, not the area (can't be wider). you can swap sights with anything you choose (no optics unless you're going to Carry optics or Open)
Sscott Allan the base plates do not add capacity, but they do give a little more meat to grab onto and a little more weight to help empty mags drop out faster and smoother, and ya know, style! ;)
Kevin Martinez , I have 5 on the belt. I have 8 mags total. At a stage start I have a stripper mag in my right back pocket (for putting a round in the chamber), then my first mag in my left back pocket. 5 fully loaded on the belt for stage reloads.
Look on USPSA website, there should be a list of clubs that host matches. There will be bare bones info about match schedules, but that may be out of date. Best to then go to the clubs website fir better info. It's been a long time for me, but I recall match fees being low, say $20 US. Be prepped to join the club if you intend to shoot matches there often. Hope this helps.
Great video...glad to know I'll have to drop alot of coin to even compete in anything other than production. Too bad they dont care about normal people that just want to have fun...Not worth it bummer...
Realistically, you can compete with whatever you want. Doesn't mean you'll win, but there's no rule I've ever seen that says you can't go out there with a Hipoint C9 and a few mags in some milsurp pouches. It's not the organization that costs a lot money, it's the guns and accessories. That's no fault of the sport.
"Show up and have fun". Probably the best advice that I've heard on youtube. Thanks for the vid man.
Hey, another NYer. Glad I found this page now
This is the most helpful video I've seen so far.
Thank you :-)
Seconded

Dude you just saved me a lot of money with this video I was just about to do the same thing buy everything and go limited 😂😂 😂😂 Thanks Man
Maurice Herring you’re welcome
Great video! Already broke rule #1 lol very much looking forward to my first match.
I bought a cz75 sp-01 9mm for production steel challenge. I still need a holster and belt. Plan on getting blade tech belt, holster and mag pouches.
Thanks for this video. Explaining the minor/major issue really helps
Derek Perry , you’re welcome, happy to help!
Thanks for the advice! Great video.
Douglas Redford, you're welcome!

@@2AGunsmithingandFirearms I think so! I'm sure there's more you can add. Maybe talk about benefit of custom pf loads vs off shelf ammunition
MR. MAGNOLE good idea!

Thanks for the info! Have my first competition next month, wish me luck! 😂
How did it go? I’m wanting to start doing this. Just got my holster in the mail today still waiting on the belt and mag pouches
great advice, I just purchased and am interested in joining
Great info, thank you for taking the time to make this video. I hope to get into IPSC here in Canada.
USPSA! A must try.
Good overview
is that the work bench from harbor freight? i like it.
How many rounds do you typically bring to a match?
What is the minimum trigger pull weight for uspsa production and what trigger system do you recommend?
There is no minimum trigger pull weight in and division. For triggers you can't disable or remove any safeties. Basically when it comes to trigger work for Production guns you can do whatever you want as long as any external part (the trigger itself) and and safeties are intact. 2A Gunsmithing and Firearms thank you so much for the info!
You're Welcome :-)
Oh man. When you said mistake #1, I laughed. Hysterically. Because I totally agree. #WastedMoney
Introduction gun for US PSA is it limited to stock sites or can you use the bread that also
Can you use a red dot sight in production division
No, you can't use any kind of optics in production division or even limited. Open Division is the only one where you can use optics like that.
@@schneir5 USPSA Carry Optic division is a thing now...
Not only is there an optic division they no longer have a 10 round limit, for some reason this division says as many rounds that will fit in a 140mm mag, for my CZ that's 17 rounds. Just getting started IDPA. Enjoyed you comments. Got a question. I have a ruger Mark IV Hunter 22 LCR. Can i shoot with IDPA and have a .22 cal. Or do I need to save up and get a larger competition firearm?
Bob Francati sorry, I don’t know anything about IDPA...
How do you get started in New York, I'm in lower Westchester and awaiting a CZ TSO 9mm. From the sounds of things I'm starting down the same road as you did, except I haven't purchased any other equipment till I get the gun

2A Gunsmithing and Firearms Marc = match?
InkwellFoto yup! Sorry! Auto correct...
Get started in NY? Step 1:. Get out of NY.
Do you need a membership to attend an event? & Would I show up to my 1st event with my gear, or would you advise just a spectator type meet & greet?
Lex Green , either way will probably work, depends on your comfort level. I personally just a signed up and showed up with my gear. I got a USPSA membership too. Lex Green go for it! You'll get hooked fast!!!
Whose Magazine Base pads did you use?
Springer Precision - shop.springerprecision.com/product.sc;jsessionid=C3B14B033EC31AC101806DB1405FA494.p3plqscsfapp005?productId=245&categoryId=25
Don't forget about 38 super auto for limited or open.
You said your holster is dropped and offset? I was looking at the mid ride SafariLand with OLS system, is this legal?
Jaren Jarrell , I am not sure off the top of my head. In production division the blackstrap of the grip must be above the belt line and the gun enclosed. The slide can be exposed something like 1/2" below the ejection port. As long as that criteria is met is should be Ok.

SEAKPhotog you’re welcome :-)
Can you have after market sights in production?
W3ssy W3s yup!
what sights are you using?
Bone Stock M&P Pro sights; which are Novak sights. Front is a fiber optic green, rear is flat blade.
I have a cz sp01 tactical can i still shoot in production division I haven’t done any upgrades to it
Derrick Huff you should be fine, google search “USPSA approved production gun list”
Yes
How do you like those Springer basepads?
jon mcleod , a ton better than stock! Gives you a little more length and grip surface for more positive mag seating. Essentially, if the rules allow for it, you should probably explore it because your competition sure is! ;)

Do they have a rimfire division?
There is no rim fire in USPSA/IPSC but there is in Steel Challenge :-)
Did you use a match barrel?
Not Currently (as of 8/28/17). Stock barrel has plenty good accuracy at the ranges typically seen in USPSA. I may upgrade to an Apex barrel in the future, but I do not feel that swapping my barrel would improve things in a statistically significant way (enough to warrant $200)
Did you ever consider changing calibers?
yes and no. I did consider it, however decided against it because all my other pistols were in 9mm. Caliber consolidation and affordability was the name of the game.
You still shooting production?
yup! I am currently working on a 2011 build to move to Limited/L10 next season. You can check out that playlist on my channel as well :-)
So my Cajunized SP-01 Tac will be useless in limited.... awesome.
Not useless... people win shooting minor all the time... it's just going be a bit harder
You could shoot limited steel challenge, no minor/major factor
Are extended mag releases, and upgraded sights allowed in production?
Yup! The mag release can only extend the length, not the area (can't be wider). you can swap sights with anything you choose (no optics unless you're going to Carry optics or Open)
Limited to 10 rounds why the base plates?
Sscott Allan the base plates do not add capacity, but they do give a little more meat to grab onto and a little more weight to help empty mags drop out faster and smoother, and ya know, style! ;)
How many mags do you have on your belt? I am going to start under production and don't know how many to have on my belt.
Kevin Martinez , I have 5 on the belt. I have 8 mags total. At a stage start I have a stripper mag in my right back pocket (for putting a round in the chamber), then my first mag in my left back pocket. 5 fully loaded on the belt for stage reloads.
how did you find out we're to go to start competing and how much does it cost ?

How does the belts have to sit? Like does it need to go through belt loops etc or can u just buckle it as a rig and run it that way?
USPSA rules stipulate that the inner belt must pass through at least three belt loops.
thanks
you're welcome!
Get out of New York lol.... you should travel for a comp.
Planning on it :-)
So basically, if you shoot minor in limited or open your gonna get destroyed by people shooting major.
Great video...glad to know I'll have to drop alot of coin to even compete in anything other than production. Too bad they dont care about normal people that just want to have fun...Not worth it bummer...

dude, just go and shoot and try to improve your score each time. Compete with yourself... have fun!
i like IDPA better, the gear is more limited so you dont have a bunch of people running 5000$ guns
