Secret Teachings of Plato & Theology of Arithmetic - Pythagorean Origins of Sacred Geometry

  • Did Plato have secret, unwritten doctrines (ἄγραφα δόγματα) deeply influenced by the mathematical esotericism of Pythagoras? From his works, comments by Aristotle, the philosophical project of the Old Academy and later Neo-Pythagorean teachings of Nicomachus of Gerasa and Iamblichus, there is substantial, though controversial evidence, that Plato's deepest teachings are not only to be found in the Dialogues as we know them. What might have these "unwritten doctrines" taught? It may be that a small 4th century ce digest of Arithmology, the intersection of ancient Metaphysics and Mathematics, attributed to Iamblichus might give us insight into these esoteric Platonic teachings and their survival into contemporary philosophy and physics. Join me as we explore this fascinating topic, at the heart of the origins of western philosophy!

As a mathematician at heart I really appreciated the call out to Russell and Whiteheads Principia Mathematica and Kurt Gödels takedown. It's a fun connection that the Pythagorean idea that everything is a natural number or a ratio of them: When somebody found a proof that square root of two can't be one and alegedly the Pythagoreans hunting this mathematician / heretic down and drowning them. Fortunately Russell's followers did not go to such lengths.

When I was in medical school I had a Greek classmate who was very Holistically orientated -as was I. He told me that the Ancient Greek method is solving problems could be reduced to geometry and thoughtful questions. He used a triangle to illustrate this to me. He also told me that all geometrical shapes and solids had their own special philosophical interfaces with human consciousness and problem solving. I would be extremely grateful for your kindly teaching us about this

@Roco ol Never said the Greeks invented mathematics, just that it's fascinating to learn about how they thought about it. IIRC, a lot of Pythagorus's knowledge was attributed to the Egyptians, and a clay tablet from Babylon was found from long before the Greeks began to develop with several so-called "Pythagorean Triples," that is, triplets of integers satisfying a^2 + b^2 = c^2.
That said, I think the age of the sphinx you cited and the average lifespans are a bit exaggerated. The pyramids and sphinx of Egypt are certainly among the most ancient structures still surviving, but I don't think they're quite 8000 years old. As for the lifespans, given how human bodies deteriorate over time I doubt that the average lifespan anywhere was ever 120 years old.

You're tapping into a potent current, I think. This particular issue seems to be at the heart of why computer scientists have become so interested in occult philosophy over the years. These teachings really seem to center around what numbers actually ARE and what they can potentially do when that identity is understood. A computer scientist's job consists almost entirely of understanding and expanding the potential of what numbers can do in the real world.

That was really wonderful (that sounds overblown, but I really enjoyed it). I wonder about the extent to which our understanding of Plato is hampered by philosophers owning him so much? Like, when I studied classical Greek history at undergrad level, I was told that Plato was essentially under the ownership of the Philosophy Department. I bring it up, because your description of Plato as having quasi-Pythagorean esoteric teachings seem very... obvious. I feel you'd only really dispute that if you really care about Platonic Philosophy.

@@TheEsotericaChannel My point is that philosophers tend to treat Plato as a live text that they can interact with and use to generate new ideas, (which is perfectly reasonable), however it seems like that process loses track of what the historical Plato actually thought (and it's to an extent not relevant). Like, I can see why a modern philosophy professor wouldn't be interested in these esoteric readings of Plato; from a modern perspective it's very odd. There's teaching students the Allegory of the Cave, and then there's precisely pinning down what those forms are.

IDK if you plan on doing a video on this, but it should be noted that the Monad - Dyad of the unwritten doctrines of Plato had an important (religious) legacy. Neopythagoreans and Middle Platonists interpreted it as ontological /cosmological /theistic dualism where the Monad is God, who is mind /reason, and is good, and Dyad is matter, which is ensouled (so a conscious being), and evil, and the cosmos is a product of interaction of those two forces /beings. Both groups thought that this is a doctrine which went back to Plato and Pythagoras. Tho if that is true it was obviously an esoteric doctrine back then, bar a tiny mention in the dialogue Laws (at 896e) and the views of Xenocrates, the second scholarch of the Academy. Plutarch, a prominent Middle Platonist (and a priest at the Delphi temple), explicitly compared this dualism to Zoroastrian dualism. Then came Neoplatonists and rejected that dualism in favor of monism.

And a couple of books of read.... erm secret teaching of all ages, a practical guide to kaballistic symbolism, the golden bough and signs and symbols of primordial man - the evolution of religious doctrines from the eschatology of the ancient Egyptians. That's basically all I've read. But from what little I've gathered that is pretty much what all the ancient cults believed and preached, even some mainstream relatively modern religious sects of christianity believed... The cathars spring to mind. Modern western mystery schools... Guess I'll read this theology of arithmetic next, which reminds me... I've got that periphyseon to read nall

Wow, thank you for going there! One of your best episodes hands down! I wonder myself whether today's mathematical description of reality is simply a continuation of the Pythagorean notion that numbers are the language of God. Is contemporary obsession with scientific materialism and the mathematical abstraction of the observable world just riding the intellectual wave set in motion by Pythagoras? "A body (or an idea) set in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon" - as another gentleman from the same tradition put it very eloquently while looking to transcribe the hidden divine language that governs realty.
I was waiting for an Elipheas Levi reference but I'm glad you linked the tradition to the Sefer Yetzira and Agrippa. Please keep making follow up investigations into Western esoteric numerology, there's very little else out there on the topic and it really gives Esoterica an edge.

So then, "the only thing that I know is that I know nothing" can be interpreted as "I have the ability to know anything, and therefore cannot take a stance on any one thing without rendering all of it's opposites null, and who are we to deny anything when all knowledge is simply the choosing of knowing".
So perhaps what was meant when Plato said "the unwritten dogmas", was actually "the dogmas that can never be written", because to undertake writing them would be to bind oneself to the writing of them indefinitely, because it would never end. Hence the interest in finding patterns in reality, because to find such definite patterns could release us from the void of wonder. But maybe not, because there is always the choice to know or not to know, whether it be proven or not... And proven under what circumstances? Seems to come back to "I do not know", or rather "I cannot know".

Funny as was watching this mind was flooded by previous ideas and books I've read (mostly sepher yetzirah and Jewish traditions about the Tree of Life)...now have to find a couple copies of those books on Plato you mentioned. And pull out and re read everything from Jewish traditions and Israel Regardie books on the Golden Dawn etc. There was something that very much clicked with the Triangle 4 points per line.....Never really delved into Ancient Greek Geometry and maths....But Thank You for the insight!...lol late nights and black coffee in my future methinks for a bit now.

While writing my senior paper a couple months ago on Pythagorean religious practices I came across mention of lectures by Plato concerning Pythagoras that his students preserved in the Academic tradition, so it’s not just Aristotle who says he taught things that weren’t preserved in what remains.
I also found that there’s no way to isolate a Pythagorean set of practices or beliefs on top of plenty of things attributed to him/them which are known to not be, and the most honestly you can characterize “knowledge of Pythagoreanism” is as “knowledge of how Platonists thought about Pythagoreanism.”
Edit: the only teaching of any kind with contemporary evidence is religious, and is that Pythagoras taught of the immortal soul. The next era of evidence is Plato which is over 100 years later.

Up to the deca the ten but maybe they are more single digit units before the ten. Like ten should be thirteen or 9,A,B,C.
Also if your cold move to heat and vise versa. So the experience is much harder to give. Find comfort and you have journeyed closer to god so to speak.

The circle of inversion is an excellent model. The exterior is universe. circle is event horizon/perception. inside of circle is antimatter universe, which maps 1:1 onto matter. The shadow. Planck particle is the monad. Possessing all states and some point on it's surface. The universe is the infinite reflection/eversion of this. We and our opposite both form a unity and yet cancel out to nothing at all. The surface of an infinitesimal, with a vacuum in middle.

I believe Gurdjieff's 4th way was mainly influenced by Pythagoras & Plato, his theory of the 4 states of consciousness, including the 3rd, self-remembering matches Plato's analogy of the cave, his model of man as a 3 storied factory relates to Plato's harmonious beehive, the end view of Noah's ark, the Sefer Yetzirah, Robert Fludd's work, whilst his enneagram may relate to the 3 examples of pure forms being a triangle, cup (circle) & table (square, with some morphing), also reflected in the Tarot's magician card.

If Plato had no esoteric teachings he would be the exception to the rule. As with all mystery religions and great schools of thought, the "inner circle" of adept initiates would always be provided more complex revelations. You can't jump from grade-school math to complex geometry without a lot of training.

Thank you for such a high quality video and online lecture.
While reading "Platonic Mysticism" by Arthur Versluis, I found the distinction
between the etic and emic approaches to this subject matter beneficial.
One can read John Dillon's recommendation for his book on the back cover.
The present debate seems to be about what can be considered a proper scholarly
approach to mysticism. The object-subject distinction made between the observer
or researcher assumes a separation making the One "apart", from one perspective.
However it could be pointed out that there is an element in Platonic mysticism that
could be stated like the tetralemma and it is a known mystery without qauntity. Might
    your agree ?

I encourage EVERYONE to consider the writings of Dr. Peter Kingsley. He has dealt with this in a very sobering and scholarly manner, while also being so influenced by his penetration of the material that he addresses Plato in a manner I think almost everyone seems to miss. A bold claim, I fully realize. The master key is the practice of incubation and the pre-socratics Empedocles and Parmenides. This tradition was probablu absorbed in the christian tradition of hesychasm.

If you understand the limits of words, you will realise that the set of words is much smaller than the set of all possible experiences. Describing colour to the blind or classical music to the deaf, and that is still in the material world without venturing into the vast universe of the mind. That means there naturally exists a great corpus of non-word experiences and insights already. That, to me, is the real esoteric or occult. Hidden, not by design,(although that happens too),but because we are incapable of experiencing it, at the moment. Thanks.

I thank you Dr. Sledge and others like the Modern Hermeticst and Zevi for giving me so much to think about.
