I have an old Panasonic walkman myself that always worked great, but I made the mistake of packing it away in a box and after it sat the belt went bad. It's a logic controlled deck, and the tape heads are sorta built onto the tape door so I've been afraid to mess with it. It also has auto reverse. I've repaired a few of the cheaper models with the clunky buttons, but nothing electronically controlled like the one I have now.
I am impressed - I have many questions - as a big fan of Panasonic cassette players - Can you let me know if you have a link with the list of Panasonic walkman cassette made - I try to figure out the last 10 devices models ever made - If I not mistaken is RQ SX the second last made ? Can you describe the sound ( if has strong bass, clarity, details, big sound stage, loud ) comparing with other Panasonic models ? I want to buy Panasonic rq s80 do you know from where ? from where I can buy the tools you use and belts ? What's your favourite sounding / the best Panasonic portable cassette player ? I have in my collection Panasonic rq s 60, 50, 40, Rq sw 99, 70, RQ C10 V, RQ SX 55,60,75, 75V, 65F, 95F, 99F - few of them not in working condition - I regret I did not keep some other like RQ SX 72, 91 - now after I see your video I want to have all of them in working condition as my collection + to buy some more like the last 3 models made ( hope you can help me to find out which are ) - thanks - look forward to talk to you - any suggestions to buy some special sounding players ?
Buy them off eBay. They're expensive, but they're worth it. Especially if you use one to calibrate a high-end machine. That means you can make your own test tape afterwards.
8:14 To prevent the plastic part of the clutch from flying out. I stick a piece of tape over the clutch. I leave a space, without touching the tape to the plastic, similar to the ripple of a roller coaster. . If the clutch comes loose, the tape will absorb the impact. Panasonic are a pain in the ass.
How about to lubrificate the plastic gears? I will try with special paste that companies use in toys (air guns). I just can't belive they don't use any kind of lube in..... So many gears.... What do you think?

Great video. Very helpful. How do you get a test tape?

In the video I accidentally said the tolerance is +/- 3Hz. I meant to say 30Hz
