  • Epson supposedly had a burned up lamp connector.Turned out to have a totally different and easy to repair issue. This shows how maintenance is important. Music is from Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels sound track. I don't own the music rights, but they jam.

    I have an Epson Powerlite 2040 that will not display images any longer through HDMI. The receiver it was connected to also stopped working using HDMI. Believe a surge hit it and the only thing downstream was the projector that was connected via HDMI. Any idea what I should replace...an HDMI board? All other outputs work fine.

    Looking for some help please, Ive have a Epson tw6000 from new for about 10 years. It hasnt seen a lot of use in fact the lamp hours is circa 1200. It has never skipped a beat over the years until last week. The room in question has recently become my home office so the projector started to see some more action and was working fine for over 6 hours at time. Then the problems occurred, The projector has started to cut out within 30-300 seconds of turning on. At this point the fans go into overdrive suggesting it has overheated, this is not the case. As well as this the lamp indicator started to flash red and the projection cuts out completely.
    Given the above i assumed the lamp was the problem so have changed the lamp with no luck.
    Other things i have noticed is before it cuts out the picture starts to flicker slightly and brightness also changes randomly.
    Also another thing to add is no device is plugged in so its not related to another piece of hardware
    I can video the issue and upload if ppl think that will help
    Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

      Hi Phil, I would really try a new lamp first. Before going down the route of internal issues, it is always wise to try a lamp, even at 1200 hours. 10 years is up there for an epson, so there are chances of other issues, but I would definitely try another lamp first. Just make sure you can return it and that it uses an Osram bulb. You will not be able to find a real OEM anymore. Iwasaki has not made that lamp in a few years.

    I have a Epson Home Cinema 3500. There's a blueish discoloration that appears on the left side of the picture and on the bottom righthand corner. The thing is , it only really shows while grey images are being displayed (grey backgrounds, black and white movies or concrete/ground images). Do you know what this could be?

    • @FixitFrank

      My guess would be dust buildup in the LCD section. A simple cleaning may be enough to clear it up. If you have access to an air compressor or canned air, use some gently(not full blast) to dislodge the dust. I would try that, and see if the bluish discoloration changes. If it does, then you know its a dust problem. If the blue does not change, you could have a polarizer issue. That is bit more of a problem to deal with. Protect ya neck...

    Hey been watching a few of your videos and had a quick question, my ballast wont ignite but it is running at the right voltage. It will click twice at about 20-50 volts then it runs at 190v instead of firing around 400v, what component on the ballast board would cause the initial ignite to be so weak?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  10 років тому +3

      Hi! Most likely your ballast is ok. Like you said, it's trying but at a lower voltage. I suspect you have a problem with the pfc circuit on the main power supply. Either the pfc mosfet is bad or a control ic isn't telling the pfc circuit to enable the 400v. Power supply. Unplug the power to the ballast and if it's 170 or so, it's not working. Also make sure any safety interlocks are bypassed/disabled. Something isn't turning on in that 400v portion of the powersupply and that is why the ballast isn't firing correctly. The ballast may still be damaged, but without the 400v you can't know for sure. What model# is the projector?

      I just got a new main power board installed today, the one that was in there was shorted out, fuse was blown and had scorch marks all over (ebay purchase), everything powers up fine if i bypass the ballast and shine a light through I get a perfect image. Its an ACER x1220H, osram ballast 180v. And thanks so much for replying so fast, your video was the most detailed I have seen so far so I figured you know a whole lot more about this than anyone else on here :)

      Jacob Spottsville That helps a lot. Its a relatively new, yet inexpensive projector. The high voltage side isnt turning on to run the ballast, so its possible the ballast or mainboard was damaged when the old psu died. The fact that everything else works leads me towards the ballast. Since it acts like its going to strike, the control wires are most likely ok. Check the mosfets on the ballast and see how many are shorted. If they check out you will need to find which wire (between the mainboard and power supply) that enables the PFC circuit. the PFC circuit is the one that drives the large mosfet next to the large diode..There is an IC that should have a leg that goes all the way back to that set of wires. If that does t act right, then the main board is bad. Good luck!

      Jacob Spottsville www.projectorcentral.com/Acer-X1220H.htm here are the specs. if the ballast is bad, you can search ebay for used ballast or another projector that takes the same bulb. repairing the ballast is not usually cost effective since the mosfets can cost as much as a used ballast.

    @FixitFrankv I have an epson 6020 with a line going down the right side on some scenes. In all blue screen , no line all green screen no line, all red screen black line. Does that mean the red ribbon cable is damaged or should I try to reseat the connection?

I have an epson ex5220, usually has an xbox plugged in but I plugged a chromecast in for the superbowl and ever since unplugging the chromecase and plugging the xbox back in it now says NO SIGNAL. • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 роки тому

      That's really unusual. It kind of sounds like the HDMI port was damaged. Any chance the Chromecast was using a non Google power adapter? Some cheaper or aftermarket power adapters can pass wall current and blow up things due to how the grounds are handled. Is the Chromecast okay on other devices? If the HDMI port was damaged it might be repairable but there a chance it needs a new main board.

    Hello! I have an Epson powerlite 6110i that I just bought online and everything works great except everything has a green tint to it. When I set the default background to black, it becomes a darkish green. I've done some research and it looks like one culprit could be the green polarizer going bad. Could you think of anything else that could cause this? Also how hard of a fix would that be, would it even be worth fixing? Thank you so much!!

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  5 років тому

      Hi Luke, you need a new polarizer for sure. That's a common failure. It's the usual reason for the demise of most LCD projectors. I found them on Alibaba for $45 a piece. They also had the entire optic assembly. You need to use the proper polarizer (red for red, green for green etc) or it won't get your colors right. You might be interested in finding a projector that has a bad power supply but good optics for a parts unit. Emp6000 is a compatible unit as well. Hope this gets you in the right direction.

      It depends on the cause. Itf the light is on right way, you have a bad fan. I dont know which fan as there are many. If it comes on after the projector is running then you have dust build up in a fan or fans.

    Not sure if your still paying attention to this video, but I wonder if you could help? I have an Epson EB-S31, it won't power up, at all. Dead. I've checked fuses etc and tested power is going to the board. There's a fuse on the board, tested that. I think the bulb is dead as I did a continuity test and got no reading. But I read that even if the build is dead I should still get power and LEDs telling me the bulb is dead. But like I say, nothing, nada, zilch. Any ideas? Thank you.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  6 років тому +1

      You are correct. Even if the bulb is bad you would have LEDs doing something. The power supply is likely your culprit. If you check across the large capacitor(carefully) and you read 150-320dc (120-240ac) and not 380-400dc, the power supply is not working. You can also measure this on the power input wires to the ballast if dealing with an exposed PCB isn't something you are comfortable with. Keep in mind that's enough voltage to really do some damage, even from arc flashes. If you measure 380-400dc, that could mean the problem is on the secondary low voltage side or the mainboard. I bet you have a bad power supply and maybe a bad ballast.
      The bulbs in these are mercury vapor short arc lamps. They use a tiny sustained arc inside that glass tube in the center of the lamp. No continuity there is actually a good thing. If you had it, then the lamp would be shorted. The ballast takes the 380-400dc from the power supply and uses it to pump up the output voltage to a couple thousand at a few milliamps to strike the arc in the bulb. That is the initial flicker you see when they start. Then it starts to lower the voltage to around 100dc and raise the amps proportionally to keep a steady smooth arc. Sometimes the bulb will explode or short out and cause the ballast to fail and take out the power supply. Doing a continuity check on the 4 large MOSFets in the ballast (on the heatsink) would be a good test to see if the ballast is OK. As long as they aren't shorted it is probably fine and a used but good power supply would get it up and running. You could troubleshoot the power supply but switching supplies can be tricky without the right test gear. Even so, check over the power supply and look for anything that looks burned or discolored. That is not a cheap projector so it would be worth putting some money into. Personally I would set a cap of $150-175USD in parts if you do it yourself. $250-300 if you pay someone. To find parts/repair units to cannibalize you can search for models that use the same lamp. Most models that use the ELP-LP87, or ELP-LP88 lamps should have compatible parts. They may look different or have different optical specs but the lamp ballast and power supply parts should be the same. Thanks for watching my video!

      Hi Mike, Is there no blue at all or only no blue when you connect a signal? There are the 3 colors for LCD and its possible one of the cables came out of tore causing the blue to no longer respond. That would be my first guess if there is no blue at all.

    • @mikebell6926
      @mikebell6926 5 років тому +1

      Thanks for your response frank. If your familiar with the powerlite 95 when nothing is hooked up there’s a solid blue screen and it seems to be only blue in upper part of screen and lower right side of screen and there are some shades of blue when I have something connected(firestick). But no solid blue and there seems to be a heavy greenish tint to everything now. Also when I go to color adjustment and I try changing the bling tint weather I have the blue all the way up and then go all the way down on it and vice versa nothing on the screen changes, as far as getting a lot more or a lot less?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  5 років тому

      I would guess some of the optics(lenses/filters) popped out of position or cracked. The issue you describe has me thinking about the polarizers in the blue channel. It may be worth checking to see if anything is out of position on the blue color channel. It might be as simple as something that got shifted out of its mount.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 роки тому

      @@mohammadsamani That can be loose LCD cables. If you removed them, you may want to carefully re-seat each cable. The projector is a bit old, so the cables will be very brittle from all the heat exposure.
      If you can see the other colors and the tint is very yellow, it might be a loose optical filter and/or bad polarizers. Reliable parts may be hard to find. Keep that in mind. LCD projectors tend to last about 7 years on average due to the materials used to make the optics. They degrade over time from the heat of the lamp. I am sorry I do not have better suggestions.

      Hi Liam, it depends on how damaged. If only the input pins are damaged, then it can be de-soldered and re-soldered. If the connector is in perfect shape and the HDMI is not working, then it might be a different issue. Is the plug itself damaged?

      @@FixitFrank Thanks for the quick reply! Yes the pins inside the HDMI port are bent and broken so the port needs to be replaced, does it need to be de soldered or is all the I/O connections on a separate board to the main board that can just be replaced? • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  5 років тому

      That is good news. Usually the HDMI is right on the mainboard. It is surface mount soldered to the edge in most cases. It's not super hard to replace in that case, but you need a hot air solder station to do it right. You 'could' use an iron, but I think it would be more chance to cause problems. Hot air stations run about $40 US. www.amazon.com/YAOGONG-Rework-Station-Digital-4Nozzles/dp/B071JDQGMV/ref=sr_1_8 I have one of these as a backup and its fine. Between that, some flux and some sodler paste you can replace the connector. The only other hurdle is finding the right format HDMI plug. I suspect Farnell or similar will have them. If you want to get me a picture of the connector(from the inside) I will look around online for one. Another kind of janky option is to buy an HDMI to VGA or HDMI to DVI converter and skip repairing the HDMI port on the projector.www.amazon.com/Benfei-Bidirectional-Female-Adapter-Gold-Plated/dp/B07CXY79KR/ref=sr_1_8 Ive had these work before. Its not always going to work but its worth a shot for $7 USD.

      It varies depending on the projector. Most of the time I either buy the entire ballast on eBay, then only use the connector/wire and save the ballast for parts. If that is not an option I have a small network of other servicers/e-recyclers/and parts vendors I will check with. This particular connector came from a ballast I bought on eBay. There are many other projectors that use that format connector. As long as its physically the same, it does not matter if it came from an Epson, an NEC or a Hitachi. The ballast is usually made by TDK and is used in many different models.

      Hi Isky! I will start with the easy stuff. There is a "blank" button option on the remote. Its possible it was activated. That would give you these exact symptoms. I would try toggling that mode first. If you are like me and never use the OEM remote, make sure the batteries are good. It wouldn't be the first time a tech thought the batteries were good, fully tore down a projector only to find the remote wasn't working(looks back and forth)... Try that first. If no good, then it might be something with firmware or maybe the auto iris but I am leaning towards the blanking mode being on. There are some things I can recommend to look at on the mainboard but I need to check and see what the US equivalent is before I can say more. I think the Powerlite 8350 will suffice (for finding what to check on the mainboard) but I need to make sure.

      I dont want to say 100% its the main board with out seeing it myself, but in my experience that is the cause. It is very expensive. I dont even do them because its more than the projector usually. You may want to look on eBay for the same model with a bad lens or power supply and then use the parts from yours to fix it or fix yours with a used parts projector from eBay. That is usually much more cost effective.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  6 років тому

      That can mean a few things. It all depends on when the led starts to flash. Usually if the temp light flashes right away when you start up the projector, it usually means there is a fan not turning or it is turning but the RPMs aren't being sensed. If the temp LED flashes after the projector is on for a little while, then you probably have dust build up in the fans or the filter needs to be cleaned. In some rare situations there is a mainboard problem and the cost to repair is too much.

      +Richard Richardini I would suspect the lamp first. This is because that is the simplest to replace. The lamp may have a bad connection or the arc tube has a defect. If that model has an auto-iris, the iris may also be acting incorrectly. This seems to be a non-us model so I am having a hard time reading the specs. So it may not have an auto-iris. If not, then I would contact Epson for a lamp under warranty or purchase one from a company who will accept a return if the lamp is not the issue.

      Thanks. If the problem continues, is it possible the lamp stops working one day?
      Can I put the lamp out and clean it. What kind of products do I need to do it?

      Do you think are the connectors of the lamp dirty or others around? How can I clean it?

      +Richard Richardini There isn't any need to clean anything specific. Rather, unplug and replug the lamp into its socket to make sure it has a solid seating and connection. While the lamp is out, inspect the housing and the bulb and wire. Look for heat damage, or melting or burn marks on the wires or the crimps between the bulb wire and the connector wire. Look at the connector pins. They should be metal colored(brass or steel) without any burn marks. If you see burn marks, do not continue to use the lamp as it can melt the connectors together. If everything seems ok(nothing obviously bad), re-instal the lamp.
      The lamp runs at high current when projecting. Any fluctuation in the amperage can cause the arc to change intensity drastically. Another possible cause is power to the projector. Air Con units, heaters, motors for fans. Anything that can cause a change in the supply voltage to the projector would possibly affect the lamp's operation.
      I would start by unplugging and replugging the lamp. Do it a few times to see how it feels. It should feel like its in place. Then evenly tighten the screws until they are snug but not over tight. Just tighten them until they stop and then a turn then tiny bit more.

    I have an Epson 1060 Home Cinema, that has no power. Its 2 1/2 years old. What could it be?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 роки тому

      It is hard to say exactly. Could be a fuse or a power supply problem. I think you might be under warranty though. Many Epson warranties are 3 years. Try another power cord if you have the option in case it is that simple.

      Thank you for your response. I called Epson, and they said my warranty ended last month on the 5th. However, as a one time complimentary service they are sending me a replacement.

      @@ElectOne22_ Fantastic! I am very happy to hear that. Epson is one brand that I have a hard time working on as they are very tight lipped about service info. It is wonderful they are going to help you.

      How to check the lamp outside the device

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for the reply! Is the Lamp LED orange or the Power LED? You can't test the lamp outside because it is an arc lamp. No meter can check them. The projector should still try and run with a bad lamp. The fans should turn on and the Power LED should flash Green and then turn Red after a few minutes if the lamp is bad. I see there is a control lock option that can bet activated by accident. Try holding the ENTER button on the remote for 10-12 seconds and see if the projector turns on. See page 34 of this link. www.projectorcentral.com/pdf/projector_manual_4590.pdf It is the manual. If this is not the case, you may have a bad mainboard. That is not common but I have seen that on models that are similar. To check your bulb, the best method is using a known-good lamp or known-good projector.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  6 років тому +1

      The only reliable way is to use a known-good projector. A visual examination can help. See if there is any broken glass inside the front. There is a small glass tube that holds the arc-lamp parts. They can explode if they are old. I think you have another problem. The projector will still try and start with a bad lamp. It will not change the power light to orange only. It will show other symptoms with a bad lamp.
