The book looks awesome. Hopefully CGL prints more soon (out of stock at CGL webstore). Thanks for doing the book review. Would love to see more reviews of reference media that you use to get inspiration for your paint schemes.
Will do. Since there is interest, I may go through some of the other recent offerings.
Good stuff sir! I disagree a bit about Adam Steiner and Nicolai Malthus, but I'll save that for a reaction video. 😉
That's OK. No one is perfect. I accept you as you are. 😃
The physical book looks beautiful. I got the pdf because I live outside the US and shipping just gets nuts.
It's quite high quality. It really is a shame that shipping overseas is such a pain.
Slick!
Nice review.
Thank ya!
Your sentiments pretty much match my own. I've recommended Legends as a primer to new players who want to know a little more about the distinct eras of BattleTech. Considering the book was meant to be a vanity project the Clan Invasion kickstarter backers, I think Catalyst did a good job with the limited resources they had. Legends will make a good companion to the upcoming BattleTech Universe.
As for the content itself, I think Nondi Steiner and Trent of Smoke Jaguar should have been in this book. I felt that there was a noticeable lack of Steiners in the book compared to other Houses. The Jumangi/Dark Age eras were sparse of profiles. There are definitely some MechWarriors that should have made the cut. Like Belle Lee, Daoshen Liao, Kenyon Marik, or Roderick Steiner.
But again, Catalyst was on a budget and probably pressed for time to get the book out, so it's understandable.
Fair. As far as the clans go, there could have been a Ghost Bear or Smoke Jaguar entry to even things out a bit.
@@MechanicalFrog Agreed.
Really nice review, I've got the PDF version of this but I would like the dead tree one, its got nice fluff and lovely art in it. I loved the Charles Kinkaid story too, really well written!
I guess that I'm just a traditionalist but I still prefer to own hardback books. It doesn't really feel "real" until it's in my hands.
This book did marthe so dirty lol her other artwork varied from decent to great. I like how they redeemed Nikolai Malthus though actually achieving something important that most in universe has no real idea what he did.
I might get it, at least for my junior MechWarriors. And painting inspiration.
I'm glad I bought it.
Adam Steiner is in the lore, he just popped up on one of the civil war era books I read
He might be, but I don't have to like it.
The Adam Steiner and Nikolai Malthus lawsuit is canonical. The old cartoon is pretty cringy and the book writers had to figure out a way to make it noncanonical. They didn’t want to just write it off outright so this is how they did it. Malthus ends up getting thrown in a Lyran prison for six months because he tried to Batchall the judge after the case was thrown out.
My eyes have rolled completely out of my skull.
@@MechanicalFrog there’s plenty of out there stories in Battletech for instance during the golden century the jade falcons and the blood spirits fought on the world Arcadia with a 2 full trinaries of mechs each and including a Corvette class warship and a on-planet fortress the wager? 5 tons of Arcadian russets a.k.a. space 🥔 🥔
I detect a bit of author bias here. 😕 No real beef, though. But it does make me wonder if Catalyst is pondering video story telling of their own.
@@observationsfromthebunker9639 I doubt it the cartoon bombed pretty hard. Malthus was almost a power rangers level supervillan in that show.
@@michaelkimberling7307 Considering the current state of Hollywood, I'm not holding my breath for a better remake or any other video treatment. Maybe in a few more years.
Thanks for a good review. Based on it I understand that this is Catalyst doing a lore dump of famous Mechwarriors that every player should recognize. Plus their favorite rides, because this is Battletech. I might get it myself, because time is a thief of memory based data. Yeah only fifteen biographies, I could easily make it thirty, but Catalyst is trying to sit on the price and that's okay.
I don't regret the purchase. It's a neat piece of fluff with great art in it.
You can not do Adam Steiner and Nicolai Malthus dirty like this, Amigo.
I can and I did.
Thanks for the review, just bought the book because of it.
I hope you enjoy the book as much as I do.
Adam Steiner does appear in the universe Canonically, indeed he was in a number of novels - Field Marshal Adam Steiner, leading the LAAF forces during the civil war. Not sure about Malthus
I don't take issue with them existing in the universe. I'm more embarrassed by what they did with Malthus.
@@MechanicalFrog Ah, fair enough. I just found a copy of Legends, and will have to read up what happened, but from the bit you mentioned... I am kinda embarrassed as well.
