The Unofficial Campus Orientation | University of Dundee Walking Tour

  • Join me for a wee wander round Dundee University campus & lets get orientated! Whether you're moving to Dundee soon, or you just fancy a nosey, it's my pleasure to show you the sights.
    Dundee is a city on the East coast of Scotland, just an hour north of Edinburgh. It's well connected, but the city itself is very walkable and car friendly if you're wanting to bring your car to uni (i'll point out parking spots later on in the video). In the city of Dundee, there are two universities. University of Dundee (most famous for life sciences) and Abertay (most famous for video games).
    I start this video down at the train station at the waterfront. The V&A design museum and the Discovery Antarctic expedition boat and then we head up towards campus. To set your bearings, the river Tay sits to the south, and the Law hill sits to the north. If you're ever lost on campus, first of all, use google maps or ask a friendly stranger, but failing that, north is usually uphill, and south is usually downhill. Easy peasy.
    The Dundee Uni campus itself isn't too big. Maximum 10 minute walk between classes. I've added wee annotated google maps into the video to help you out. But you should be able to spot the campus on a map easy enough because its encircled by main roads. Perth Road, the high street, straight along the bottom; and Hawkhill, the dual-carriageway, curving round the north side. And yes, Hawkhill is a wee hill too. North side = uphill remember.
    We walk round in a wee figure of eight, pointing out everywhere you'll need to know:

    I can only imagine the uncertainty and extra anxiety that coronavirus is causing to everyone moving to uni this year. It's not what you imagined, it's not what you signed up for, but hopefully you will have a wonderful undergrad or postgrad experience. I know nightclubs are closed, and house parties (over 15 people, max 3 households) are literally illegal right now (August 2020). So freshers week will not be as normal. Far from it. I could just give a hug to everyone who's not able to experience what they imagined (for now anyway). But there will be friends to make, and fun to have. Quarantine with flatmates might be the most thorough "get to know me session" one could imagine.
    If anyone IS QUARANTINING, I've added some info that you may find useful. Groceries can be ordered to your door from groceries.ASDA.com. Choose a time slot (book early & you can amend your order until 10pm the day before). Also, the uni has a free streaming service learningonscreen.ac.uk/ondemand so you can watch everything that's ever played on UK TV. Worth a nosey for sure (quarantine or not).
    If anyone is looking for COVID advice, the Scottish Government do a daily update at 12.15 (Monday-Friday) live on scotgov, or on the telly. Or you can have a look into the stats/guidance at gov.scot. A summary of the rules in Scotland right now (Aug 2020): FACTS
    F- face coverings in busses/shops/indoors enclosed spaces are mandatory
    A- Avoid crowded places... like the plague
    C- clean your hands & hard surfaces regularly
    T- Two meters distance from folk you don't live with
    S- book a test if you have ANY symptoms (new continuous cough, fever, loss of or change in taste/smell)
    There are multiple events that run yearly at UoD, like the zombie apocalypse charity day, Holi festival of colours, re-freshers week in January, Halloween, St Patricks day 17th March, the carpark rave (November ish?). Every so often the uni has alpaca petting days (summer time), guide dog petting days (exam time), bouncy castle assault courses /sumo wrestling, outdoor movie screenings. Student life is pretty sweet sometimes.
    Anyway, enough of my rambling. Nobody reads the video description anyway. I truly hope you love student life in Dundee as much as I have. Safe travels here. Bring ear plugs, tupperware, a door wedge and bring your mask. Don't feed the seagulls. *inhale*. *exhale*. You got this.

    When I was heading to uni, the only way for me to find my way around was exploring with trial and error. There's not too much info out there about Dundee, so I hope this can help settle you in & find your feet.
    This year there is so much uncertainty, and open days impossible for so many.
    If you want to jump to specific accommodation:
    Belmont 16:30
    Heathfield 20:20
    The Hub, Parker House & Campus (private student accommodation) 25:37
    Seabraes 39:32
    Westpark 47:00
    Also, shout out to the free shop, you can pick up lots of second hand items (for the kitchen, clothes, bed sheets, clothes hangers for example). The students who are moving away just drop donations off and new students can pick items up, absolutely free! A truly wonderful scheme.
    The community fridge is also wonderful local project 43:37. Shops donate their excess food and everyone is welcome to collect it for free! Checkout their daily haul on the Facebook page here:

    My kid has been accepted to two UK schools for a Master's and needs to decide soon which one to select - apart from the programs, instructors etc. she needs to weigh the campuses and towns themselves. Since we are unable to check out both campuses in person at the moment, as an international student, your video has helped tremendously - especially helped her mum! I've asked relatives and friends, and friends of friends so, in addition to your videos (not just this one), I know which place I am hoping she chooses! Thank you! I hope my kid has the opportunity to run into you sometime! Best of luck with your studies Emma!

    Hey Emma, thank you for your great video! Would you recommend belmont/heathfield flat for international student? or is it more convenience to rent outside?

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  2 роки тому

      Hey, I would wholeheartedly recommend Belmont/Heathfield for international undergrads. It's incredibly convenient, feels safe, central to uni support and within the campus bubble. It's easy to make friends, and get your bearings on the city. Deposits/payments are handled well and the only down side I see is the cost. It is super expensive. However, if you can afford it, it has lots of benefits. If you're a post grad, Belmont/Heathfield might be overbearing. It does have a very young vibe, and despite there being postgrad-specific buildings, it can still feel a little cramped. If you still want the convenience, but need more prostgrad space, there are places at Seabraes/Westpark that do feel more mature.
      Onto private rents, I'm a big fan, and there is LOTS of choice within walking distance of Uni. The rent costs are a lot lower. Many places can come with gardens, parking, views over the Tay river. There are some wonderful private student flats around. You will likely need to find flatmates, arrange internet contracts, heating bills and this can be overwhelming, but not impossible. The main crux to international students getting private lets is you often need a UK guarantor, or to be signing documents in person etc. So this can logistically be difficult if you're not in the country. Best of luck!

    Thanks for sharing this Emma, I just got an interview for an MSc with the school of medicine! eek! Any tips? :D

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  3 роки тому +1

      Good luck! Research a little into who will be interviewing you or the senior staff in the school of medicine. If any specifics of their work excites you, talk about the work. Talk about them by name. That will come across well in the interview. It would be a good answer for the "why here?" question.
      Try to tell a story when asked if you have X quality. Prepare some stock stories in advance, and adapt them to the question. Example question- my interviewer asked how I work under pressure. Answer- One day in the lab I was working on a 9 hour long lab experiment. I wanted to test the response of immune cells to different stimuli, over strict time courses. The fire alarm went off in the middle of my time point, throwing everything off. Some of my samples were left for 30 minutes instead of 5. But I was able to change my experiment slightly, look for different immune cells instead, and ask a different experimental question. The pressure of the fire alarm didn't ruin everything and I could adapt quickly under time pressure. This story could be adapted for many qualities (planning skills, flexibility, communication as I spoke with my supervisor to re-design the experiment). Stories are more compelling than statements. You got this!

Blackness, Balgay areas are all great to live for Uni and also walking distance to Harris Academy. It depends on the building, but there are certainly lots of families around. The city centre and parks are walking distance too. All the best with the move!

    I'm considering studying abroad here, and I wondering if you know anything about the international fees and also if you know anything about the physical therapy degree program? By the way, I loved the video! It really helped me get a better look at the university!

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Emma, I'm not sure about international fees, but I do know there are quite a few bursaries given out to international students (apply online I think) so it's worth keeping an eye on those! I don't know anyone on the physical therapy program, but you'll probably have placements up at the Ninewells hospital. It's a big hospital in the west end of the city (easy to reach by bus or a long walk) that has many placements and research labs. Thanks:) I'm glad the video was useful for you!!

    I'm currently in year 12 and doing A levels and you've really convinced me to study at Dundee! I was looking at info on the Hub and I don't mean any offence but why do people live in the uni halls for UG if private accommodation is cheaper? Is it more convenient to live in UoD's halls? And will it be more quiet in private accommodation? I also noticed that CRM also have another private property, Peterson Hall. From what I've seen in the pictures, it looks really nice, is it new?

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  3 роки тому

      Hi Ruby, congratulations on making a decision! I applied for halls and didn't really know about any other options. The UoD Belmont and Heathfield were right in the middle of campus, so that appealed to me. I think for convenience and noise levels, all student halls will be roughly the same, and it really depends on flatmates/neighbours. I think Peterson halls are new, I didn't know anyone who's lived there, but it is a nice studenty part of town. I picked halls over a private flat because it felt the easiest, and I had no experience with gas/electric/internet, and I didn't know anybody to live with. The uni made it really easy. Private halls are the same for ease/pairing flatmates, and cheaper. I've been in the Hub, and it feels very similar to Belmont & Heathfield UoD halls.

      @@EmmaSandy I did some googling, and from UoD's Wikipedia website, apparently Peterson Hall used to be university accommodation but was last used as thus in 2007. It was "ear-marked for private development" so I assume CRM bought it and refurbished it.

    Hello dear, what did you say was the best bank account to open for international student? Thanks for the tip on house haunting....the zoopla really helped me out.

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  3 роки тому +1

      Hello, I'd recommend Santander bank for international students. There is a branch in the city center. I have an international friend who found it easiest to open an account with Santander. Some banks need lots of paperwork, ID and in-person meetings to open an account. Santander seemed pretty smooth for my friend. Glad Zoopla has been helpful! Best of luck with everything.

    Emma what was the 2 thing we should avoid while renting? ground floor and what ? Didn't get that and for private accommodation where do you suggest for student with family? Thank you.

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  3 роки тому +1

      The other thing was electric heating. Accommodation either comes with electric heating or gas central heating. I'd always prefer gas. It's cheaper, easier to control and quicker to heat a cold room. I think Magdalene and Blackness areas would be nice for a family if you want to be within walking distance. If you want to go a bit further out within the city and drive/bus in, Balgay and Menzeishill are good. Even further out of town and I'd say Invergowrie, Tayport, Newport and Monifieth are a good bet. All the best!

      @EmmaSandy  2 роки тому +1

      Hello, there are good private let flats in the west and south of campus that I would recommend. Look near Blackness Road, Blackness Avenue, and Perth Road (west of Blackness Avenue), Magdalen Yard Road, Winsor Street. Check out private lets on Zoopla, LettingWeb and S1Homes. Avoid letting agents with a bad reputation (Grant Property and Rockford Property). These areas are to get a quieter flat, access to garden that doesn't feel like 'student accommodation'.

    What would you say is the best way to find accommodation in Dundee? And do you know if Dundee is good for Vegans?

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  3 роки тому

      For postgrad accommodation, I'd search on Zoopla.co.uk (lots of agency lets) or citylets.co.uk (lots of private lets). Personally I would avoid renting Rockford properties. Yep Dundee is good for vegans. Food shopping check out 'The little green larder' or 'Fraser's fruit & veg' (they do delivery boxes). For eating out, check out Pacamara, Mozza, Tartan cafe (drinks for sure, haven't noticed food), and Parlour cafe (top top top of my list).

    Hy Emma, my name is Anie from Kenya.....just want to ask about transportation from Edinburgh to Dundee. The cheapest means of transport.

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Anie, the cheapest route is by bus/tram then changing to train. You can go onto thetrainline.com to book travel in advance. Travel will currently require 1 change. There are multiple possible routes. It's about £25 one adult journey.
      There is also a direct bus (X90), but this is suspended due to covid& low numbers travelling right now. It is also usually around £25.
      A direct taxi is probably £80-£120 just so you know the prices.
