I've been playing with my set up for years , I'm amazed the whole lot hasn't burst into flames ! Great video, I'm too scared to plug it all back in now 😂
I would like to add that in my opinion, Carvin is very helpful. When I bought a 2x12" bass speaker cabinet online from them some years ago (to add to my existing Carvin R1000 cab and 1x15" setup), it had no documentation, so I called them, and they answered my questions on the phone. As it turned out, I had purchased a 4 ohm cabinet without understanding that I needed an 8 ohm if I wanted to use the 2 cabs together. They helped me sort it all out and now I have a fantastic sounding dual cab setup.
Wow! Thank you. This is absolutely invaluable information. Without it, one could very easily ruin some very pricey gear. I doubt that amplifier cabinet manufacturer’s warranties cover such operator error damage. As you mentioned, this should automatically be explained within the owners manual… Bless you!
Very rare that someone can explain this concept this well. It took me a long time to figure out all this by myself, but it's golden information. Thanks Johnny - subscribed just based on this vid alone...
That's crazy how you're right about the lack of informations in user's guide. The bass player in my former band was playing à TC Electronic combo (can't remember the exact model) which was sold as a 250w amp. We thought it sounded weak for a 250 w amp but we finaly learned that the power rating was for 4 ohms speakers and the speaker that came with it was actually 8 ohms. Wish I saw this video at the time ! Thank you for uploading it !
I have a similar story. I bought a Peavey Max 208 bass combo. The max series are great amps, but their power ratings are misleading because you have to buy an extension cab to get the full output from the amp. Peavey doesn’t like to tell you that.
'Have really struggled to find advice on this subject delivered in simple terms. This was delivered extremely well and, refreshingly, without the sub-agenda of trying to be be cool/hip/happening etc.
Thank you for a much-needed video! So many bass amp/cab makers provide little to no help in their manuals with regard to connecting amps to loudspeaker cabinets!
Very informative and well presented video. Ampeg manuals do a great job of explaining this information but it's a lot easier to understand hearing it than reading it in a manual.
Awesome videos. Congrats. I love the part where you talk about the setup guide. You're so right. It's not even worth the paper it's written in. No brand explains what's necessary but they tell you to get it out of the box and turn it on ahahahh. Hilarious! Anyway, nice video. Thanks for the help. 👍🏻
Thank you for this video! I've been wanting to build a bass rig and I've looked everywhere for simple explanations on how all this works. This video helps a ton!
From memory, my SWR amp manual had a quite a good explanation on single speaker vs parallel speaker impedance and amplifier output. I think there was a couple of pages on it. Including what gauge cable to use.
I keep hearing that you have to make sure your speaker cabinet has enough power handling capability. Maybe things have changed, but I learned an important lesson back in the late 70's and early 80's with my stereos. As a teenager, I had a 45W Kenwood stereo receiver going to 100W Kenwood speakers. I must have blown out a tweeter on those speakers 3 or 4 times over a few years. I learned that since the amp wasn't a very high wattage amp, it was clipping the signal, and that's notorious for blowing out tweeters. In the 80's, I purchased a 250W Soundcraftsmen amplifier. That beast never blew out speakers...EVER! We even tried to blow out an old pair of Radio Shack speakers (I think they were rated 100W), and we couldn't. The signal from that amp was so clean and it never clipped. Maybe this principal is more applicable to tweeters, but since then I've always chosen to error on having TOO MUCH amplifier power over too little.
Really good information here and well explained .What surprised me was the lack of proper instructions, especially to somebody new to Group gear amplification that are relying on a step by step guide to safely connect their new equipment up safely.
Well explained topic that helped me understand how to properly match up speaker ohms vs amp watts. I salvaged an old crate cabinet using a new 15”8ohm legend speaker powered by an Acoustic b300hd amp head. The speaker sounds great for the money !!!
This is great information! Thank you.. But I'm curious what happens if the bass head has 2 speaker outputs and you connect both to the back of the same cabinet which has 2 inputs?
When the amplifier is not connected to the speaker, the resistance is infinite, thus still within the 4 ohm minimum requirement. (In my humble opinion)
Yes, the real reason you STILL should NOT be connecting and disconnecting in a powered on state is the possible sparks on connection that might be damaging to the components or at least cause some really awful noises on the speaker
If I have a portaflex PF500 amp head at 4 ohms, I can connect it to an Ampeg PF-410HLF 800 Watt Bass Amp Cabinet 8 ohms, how much power would the amp give me with the cabinet? I'm sorry for English, I use a translator
hi, John. while I agree with you on the point of never running the amp unconnected to its speakers, but at 11:00 I have to correct you. unconnected speaker means infinite Ohms, not 0 Ohms. if you short-circuit the output leads, then you get 0 Ohms and a burnt amp. serious amplifiers will have protection in case of a short circuit. but not all of them. there is no telling what would happen in case of infinite impedance. better not taking the chance. edit: what can happen if you connect a speaker under power: the output cascade of the amp would be immediately turned on to full power. this would create a very violent jolt of inrush current into the speaker, creating a very loud noise, possibly damaging the speaker drivers, your ears or the amp. 1 out of 5 would not recommend )
Thanks for the clear explanation. I got two 8 ohm ampeg cabs and an ampeg head (svt 4 pro) that has both, 2 separate outputs and a mono output. Is there an advantage to connect in daisy chain (As i do now) over 2 separate outputs ? Note : i use this seup only in my music roon, no live, too heavy...😊....for live i use a more handy combo. Thanks
A very good and informative presentation in a subject not well covered. I would question one point however that was stated about not turning on the amplifier without a speaker being plugged in. An Ohm is a measurement of electrical resistance. With no speaker plugged in the electrical resistance would be infinite not 0, therefore it would do no damage to the amplifier. "0" resistance would be considered an electrical short circuit. Infinite resistance is , well infinite resistance. Again a great video. Thanks
Thx for this video, i learn so much about this world of connecting bass amp with cabs ! I wish you all the best ! By the way, my Hartke LX8500' users manual does explain properly like you the impedance !
Good info. Thank you Sir, so I have a Mesa Walkabout combo amp, the speaker is 4ohm and I want to connect my 8 ohm Mesa Subway cab which is 8ohm is this safe for the amp and speakers, both speakers are 12”..
Great content .... but what about adding cabinets in series ? I wonder why someone would do that since it would make 2 8 omh cabinets 16 ohms. Not sure of the math, but would that not run a 800 w amp at about 300 w ? What benefit would that provide?
Hi Jonny, great vid, thanks. My question is about turning on an amp without connecting to a cab. A lot of heads have a headphone out socket for quiet practice. Surely if the head has this feature I wouldn’t need to connect to a cab? Unless of course connecting headphones mutes the output to the cabs? Any advice appreciated. Thanks.
Hello!!! I own an Ashdown head RM 800 EVO II. It's 800 watts with two speakon outputs for cabinets. The question is, each one of the outputs gives 800 watts? Or you have 400 watts for each output? Thank you very much!!! Great video, great explanations!!! Greeting from Chile!!! 🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱
I think I have the answer from. This but I'm just not sure. I have a marshall dbs 7400 amp head and a marshall dbs 7415 cab. I read the amp is capable of pushing its peak 2000 watts at 2 ohms. So am I able to get another 7410 or 7412 and run them both with the one head and get more power ?
I appreciate the little labeling you did during this video to differentiate the steps you are explaining. So, I got a Ampeg 6x10 cab that has a power of 600W @4 Ohms. But I want this Ampeg V-4B Tube bass head that only has a power of 100W and it supports 2, 4, and 8 ohms. What are the cons (and/or pros) of having having an amp head with a power that is significantly lower than what my cab can put out?
Hi Arthur, I can't give you a technical explanation, but I've been told that it's not a good idea to use a head with a low RMS power rating into a cab with a much higher RMS. I believe it's not good for the amp.
quick question, I have a Hartke 4x10 XL. The inputs are 1/4 and Darkglass and Aguilar amp head has XLR output. Can I connect these amps to my cabinet? do I have to use a XLR - 1/4 cable? thanks!!!
Excellent video man, thank you. My new head's fans went insane, I plugged into a load with a bad speaker cable and I think maybe it was cutting out connection to the load. I made sure to turn it off when that happened. I also played not plugged into a load, but with the headphones connected. My head is OK but it would have been nice to know not to turn it on unless it was plugged into a load. I also had a knob turned way up that could have damaged the speakers and didn't know that either. I'm pretty sure my head and cab are OK but damn what a couple of close calls, especially when I was playing loud. It's a Peavey MiniMega 1000 watt head connected to a BAG END Q10BX-D. I'm still hoping I didn't damage anything WTAF.
I played an open air gig the other day nothing major . And my ampeg bass rig was good . But I had a thought I’ve got another 1000 watt amp at home , so my question is could I run both amps together to get serious power / volume . I have 2 500watt speakers ( 4x10s ) x 2 If I did run the Amps together would I run the risk of just blowing the speakers up .. ???
In practise it’s fine to run an over or under amped combination , you just need to be aware of the potential issues. For rehearsals I generally use my 700w amp with a 2x10 that’s rated 150w. As long as I don’t drive the cab too hard it’s fine.
I've been looking for the explanation of how to run the single out to a cab to another cab.. is it series or parallel.. I have been presuming it's parallel even though it's logically a series connection. Thank you for finally clarifying, this vid needs more views.
Really good was that, you know you're stuff and willing to share it. Do you know anything or have any ideas about slaving bass amps or linking two amps together. Cheers
Really cool video ! I’m considering buying an Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 (500w on 4ohms) and pair it with a SL 210 (400w on 4omhs). My question is : would you say that it is not too risky and that I’ll just have to make sure that I’ll never push the master volume over 75% ?
Hi, thank you! Yes, If the the Cab is rated at 4 Ohms and 400w RMS then I would say it's well matched for a 500w head. The RMS rating on the cab tells you what the cab can continuously handle. It should be capable of handling short bursts of more than 400w. So, unless you're planning to run the amp head at full volume a lot (I'm sure you're not) then you won't have any problems. Also, you'll hear if you're pushing the cab too hard and you can turn it down if necessary.
Just purchased a Mesa D350 head with 2 1x12 8 ohm subway cabs. With this combo am I safe and will i achieve the max 350 while running all together. Thx for all. Bob
I have an Ampeg SVT 4 PRO I was wondering can I mono bridge the head into one cabinet and then run out of the that cab to another and be ok?? And how is the wattage distributed? The amp in mono bridge is 1200 watts
I have a ashdown 300 watt to 600 max rms head, and iam looking for a suitable cab. Could I use a cab rated at 600-1000 watts cab? Or is this cab rated to high?
10:50 as a physics student this doesn't make sense to me... Surely if you don't connect it to anything the current would have to run through the air to be able to complete the circuit, effectively making it an infinite resistance? I should look this up but this does not make sense to me
Hi, I'm sure you are right. I'm a musician not a physicist. But I still don't recommend switching an amp head on without connecting a cabinet first. Regardless of whether the resistance is zero or infinite.
Hey man I got a question.... so I have a mark bass amp combo,“ CMD 102P” the impedance is 8ohms and I just got a mark bass cabinet, so I didn’t know which one to get so I got the 4ohms.... is it fine ? Or should I get the 8ohms? The cabinet I have is the “Markbass Traveler 102P Rear-Ported Compact 2x10 Bass Speaker Cabinet 4 Ohm” And the amp combo is the “Markbass CMD 102P 300/500W 2x10 Tilt-Back Bass Combo Amp”
I have the orange terror bass head and a 4ohm 500watt cab. I would need another 4ohm 500watt cab to match that. The head is 4ohms at 500 Watts so can I use 2 500wat cabs?
Would I be able to run an amp with 300 watts rms and 4ohms into a cabinet that has 8ohms and can handle 300watts. Would this put out 300watts, is this safe to do and or practical?
Thanks, I just bought a Warwick head, and indeed no mention of how to correctly pair it with a speaker. In step one, they do mention the need to unpack the amp, albeit for this instruction they write in German language, while the other 4 steps are English. If my German was even worse I would have totally missed that first step...
good video! If I need more power for a gig I’m entertaining the idea of adding a fender rumble 115 v3 extension cab (600 watt 300 rms 8hm) to my ampeg ba 210 v2 ( 283 watt @ 4ohm, 450 @ 8) via the extension out jack. Other than offending other bass players do you think this is an advisable pairing spec wise? My thought process is to add a 15 for more low end thump where I already have 2 10’s handling the punchy sound. I’d love to get some feed back! Thanks
Hi Johnny. Great video. I have a question about tube heads. What would happen if I ran a Fender Super Bassman 300 through a Markbass 104HF that is rated 800 watts at 4 ohms? Would there not be enough power from the head to the speaker (if I ran the head at 4 ohms)? Or would the tubes be too loud for the speaker to handle? Thanks in advance.
Question just about the wattage: Can I connect 1 amp of 300watts to 2 cabs, one cab of 300watts and the other cab of 150watts? Or do i risk to damage the 150 watts cab? If you say yes, is there some order to connect those cabs??? Tnx in advance for your rep.
@@JohnnyCoxMusic Hey man, thank you for your rep. Yes, both cabs are of 8 ohms each, but always had doubs about watts, cos I didn't notice that the watts on one of the cabs were half than those from the amp and didn't match, since when the dude from music store sold me both, go figure😒👍. And thank you for these kind of videos, very informative🤟👍
Hi mister. Thanks for the video, very useful information and really well explained. My question is about the Warwick cabinets you have there. How good are they? I have the chance to buy a WCA210 cabinet, very similar to 2x8. I assume they are good enough for delivering quality sound produced by your Markbass amp, but I would like to hear your opinion. Thanks in advance. I have an Aguilar tone hammer 500 head by the way.
Thank you! I like the Warwick cabinets. I've used them quite a bit with my Markbass Little Mark III head. I think they give quite an honest representation of the sound of the amp. They don't colour the sound too much. The 2x8 doesn't give a huge amount of low end, but you wouldn't expect it to. 👍🎶
@@JohnnyCoxMusic Thank you, I really appreciate your opinion. There is very few information about this cabinets, and is really helpful to have a honest commentary about them.
So if you have a 200watt head with 2 speaker outputs and you have 2 200watt speakers, how much wattage do the 2 speakers actually put out? Do you get 200watts from each speaker? Or does it split the wattage and give you 100 watts through each speaker? Thanks for the information. God bless
@@JohnnyCoxMusic ok sweet. So if I had a 400 watt head with 2 speaker outputs, I could plug in 2 200 watt speakers and not damage them? Thanks for the reply. God bless
I have the darkglass 900(900 watts at 4ohm) and it has two speaker outputs at 4ohm. Is each speaker connected receiving 900 watts or is it 900 watts in total?
Same concept applies with guitar amps push higher wattage amp through a lower wattage speaker and you can blow it with ease for example if I take my origin 50 and drive a orange 1x8 mini cab I can end up blowing the cab because the origin 50 is a 50w head, always match your amps wattage to your cab you can get away with an lower wattage amp just remember that you’re not gonna be as loud as higher wattage amp though it’ll still get loud, running my Friedman be mini 30w solid state mini amp head through a Marshall 4x12 240w cab and it gets pretty loud.
What about a 5.3 ohm cabinet with a 8 ohm cabinet into a 1000 watt head ? It says 4 ohm minimum on the back of the head though , it’s the bullhead 1k by trickfish
I’ve been researching amps and cabinets for months now and this is by far the best explanation of how to pair amps and cabinets. Thank you!

I have 2 500watt speakers ( 4x10s ) x 2
If I did run the Amps together would I run the risk of just blowing the speakers up .. ???
In practise it’s fine to run an over or under amped combination
, you just need to be aware of the potential issues. For rehearsals I generally use my 700w amp with a 2x10 that’s rated 150w. As long as I don’t drive the cab too hard it’s fine.
Such a good explanation, saved!
@@johnnycoxguitarbassschool3957 thank you very much ! It’s pretty clear now, will go for this set up 🙏
This video is so helpful, thank you so much for taking the time to explain all this!
Tc Electronics explains every possible thing that you need to know with ohms and power ratings for bass heads.
please explain Johny , how come compos have an 8 ohm speaker in them ? do they run at half their nominated power ? thank you
I am looking for a 100W amp head compatible with the Ampeg 2X10" speaker cabinet.
help on pairing a 200 watt green matamp to a 4x10 1x15 cabinet , 4 or 8 ohms?
So can you plug in a 1000watt bass head into a 800watt 4ohm bass cab? Or would it damage the cab?
10:50 as a physics student this doesn't make sense to me... Surely if you don't connect it to anything the current would have to run through the air to be able to complete the circuit, effectively making it an infinite resistance? I should look this up but this does not make sense to me
Hi, I'm sure you are right. I'm a musician not a physicist. But I still don't recommend switching an amp head on without connecting a cabinet first. Regardless of whether the resistance is zero or infinite.
@@JohnnyCoxMusic I've just looked it up. Apparently it is dangerous, but only if it's a tube amp. Solid state amps have no problem with it.
How do you divide the wattage of an amp head that’s connected to a cabinet that has more ohms
Hey man I got a question.... so I have a mark bass amp combo,“ CMD 102P” the impedance is 8ohms and I just got a mark bass cabinet, so I didn’t know which one to get so I got the 4ohms.... is it fine ? Or should I get the 8ohms?
The cabinet I have is the
“Markbass Traveler 102P Rear-Ported Compact 2x10 Bass Speaker Cabinet 4 Ohm”
And the amp combo is the
“Markbass CMD 102P 300/500W 2x10 Tilt-Back Bass Combo Amp”
I have the orange terror bass head and a 4ohm 500watt cab. I would need another 4ohm 500watt cab to match that. The head is 4ohms at 500 Watts so can I use 2 500wat cabs?
Would I be able to run an amp with 300 watts rms and 4ohms into a cabinet that has 8ohms and can handle 300watts. Would this put out 300watts, is this safe to do and or practical?
Very helpful! Thank you!
Thank you! 👍🎶
Can I pair a 4x10 800W 8ohm with a 2x10 400W 8ohm cab ?? My head pushes out like 800W
Thanks
Thanks man! i've got 1 question. Can you run a head wihout a cabinet and only use the headphones?
Can run 20watts ,2 0hms bass amp ,to 25 watts 6 ohms speaker, without damaging the speaker and am?
Hi Oskar, assuming that both cabs are 8 ohms then it should be fine.
@@Hellion73 No worries. At 300 watts the head should send an equal signal to both cabs. So, you can think of it as 150 watts to each cab max.
Johnny, you have a strong resemblance to the Drapers in the USA,nice family any connection ?...love your info keep up the great work
Thanks Willie. I don't know the Drapers.
Appreciate the info
I use Warwick cabs and a 86' Hiwatt Bass 100
Looking at a Warwick Gnome 2x8 200w for potability
Thoughts?
So if you have a 200watt head with 2 speaker outputs and you have 2 200watt speakers, how much wattage do the 2 speakers actually put out? Do you get 200watts from each speaker? Or does it split the wattage and give you 100 watts through each speaker? Thanks for the information.
God bless
Hi Jim. It splits the power equally between the two cabs. So, maximum 100 watts going to each one. 👍🎶
Hi. It would be 900W total.
I think its tube amps (with power tubes) that need to have a speaker load on them, cheers.
Can I connect a bass amp to a powered (p.a.) speaker?
My amp is for 4 or 2 ohm cabs....my cab is 8 ohms. Was hoping there would be some talk about this
Same concept applies with guitar amps push higher wattage amp through a lower wattage speaker and you can blow it with ease for example if I take my origin 50 and drive a orange 1x8 mini cab I can end up blowing the cab because the origin 50 is a 50w head, always match your amps wattage to your cab you can get away with an lower wattage amp just remember that you’re not gonna be as loud as higher wattage amp though it’ll still get loud, running my Friedman be mini 30w solid state mini amp head through a Marshall 4x12 240w cab and it gets pretty loud.
What about a 5.3 ohm cabinet with a 8 ohm cabinet into a 1000 watt head ? It says 4 ohm minimum on the back of the head though , it’s the bullhead 1k by trickfish
fantastic information. very well done
Very informative.Thanks.
