Value is simply the light and dark of a picture. Values can be better understood when they are visualised as a scale. I like working with a value scale of 1 - 10. Dark to light. Value is the lightness or darkness of tones or colours where white is the lightest value and black is the darkest value and the halfway value between these extremes is grey. When we look at the value scale we can break it down into certain sections. Dark Value Range, Mid Value Range, and Light Value Range.
When an artwork has many tones in between black and white it is considered low contrast. A high contrast image would have fewer tones in between.
We see in 3D but then we try and draw it on a 2D surface. We need to learn how to create the illusion of depth Artists create the illusion of light and form by being able to produce a wide range of tonal and colour values.
