Reviving a one-owner NL Pajero/Montero

- My wife told me that we needed an automatic car as our spare, rather than our current NH 1992 Pajero/Montero which is manual. I managed to find a legitimate one-owner 1998 NL with the auto gearbox and dual-fuel (LPG and gasoline).
There's a fair bit to do on this car to bring it up to a road worthy condition before I can transfer it into my name, and also so that it's got some more creature comforts (like a decent stereo with Bluetooth). You may as well come with me on a series of videos I'll make on getting this old girl back into shape!
Good stuff! You have a great voice.
I love the wide body NL’s, great buy.
Will be watching this series with interest.... nice rig.
Looks a good buy, I used to have a 3.0l V6 version of the flared arch in maroon - loved it but the fuel consumption was mental, good that it's got LPG fitted on yours. Love the VR4 too, I have one also!
Yeah I still have my 3.0 NH out the front, which a mate wants to buy so he can do some mild 4WD work on a farm in Tasmania. I'll miss the NH as it's manual and I really enjoyed driving it.
Love the old shape cars but you should get an 80 series Landcruiser as it will probably be your last 4wd that you're never going to sell 😂
Meh, that's why I bought cheap. 80 series cruisers are still stupid expensive.
Brilliant vehicle, they all leak around the rocker cover gasket, ask me how I know 😂
Yeah my old Magna was the same. The rocker covers are basically made of thin sheet metal - they leak if you under tighten them, and they also leak if you over tighten them! I find that Permatex gasket dressing makes a huge difference on these seals, so I'll be using some when I get to the seals.
@@KaldekBoch yep, mines a 6g74 like yours.... I'll get around to it, I find if I don't overfill the engine oil, it's a manageable drip 👍
@@KaldekBoch forget to mention there is a belt condition check plate on the left front top timing cover casing, it's a plastic triangle shape cover, one bolt from memory, can't miss it......
Found the oil leak. Not the rocker covers, it was the cam seals. ua-cam.com/video/6LGX7NOvxok/v-deo.html
For the fact that it was driven by an 85 year old, quite a few bits missing in the engine bay.
She's gorgeous 😍 I just scored myself a 91 NH SWB for a fish tank 😅 but I've always wanted an NL, I love the blister body work, but damn they're getting hard to find. I've heard Mitsubishi have been buying them back and destroying them due to the Takata airbag thing 🤦♂️ I'm not sure how true it is though..
I hope to see more videos on her!
Hi mate, more videos definitely coming. Just have to, ah, hold off until I've got the RWC. Anyway, this NL model has no airbag so we're all good! The gas system passed checks too but that alone cost $650 for the work.
Definitely do a timing kit with pulleys and water pump while you are there. While you have all the accessory plate pulled off the front you may as well. Check your crank angle sensor as they tend to get oiled up and start to deteriorate bad after all these years, sometimes.
Way ahead of you. I managed to snag the very last Gates full timing belt kit and water pump of an old SKU at Repco for $180. And yes, it is the WHOLE kit.
@@KaldekBoch it really pays off :) I bought a 98 model GLS with the Exceed extras for $600 last year, blown head from overheating. I've swapped heads off of a motor with a blown big end and scored bores. It's absolutely beautiful, like it come off the showroom floor. I did all the other parts while I had the heads off too.
@@mitchmckeiver1429 I did some more work on it today (videos delayed due to having to travel overseas for work and now I also have the flu). Whilst that work was replacing the 4WD solenoids - which fixed the 4WD selector BTW - I also got a good look at the oil leaks and I'm pretty sure it's the driver's side cam seal that's pissing oil.
@@KaldekBoch I will watch these when you get them up. Fingers crossed it's the rear cam seal as theses are only 2x 12mm bolts I thing, back cap pops off and it's just an o ring. Front are full seals requiring cam sprocket removal as you'd know 🤦♂️ definitely something to take a close look at when doing a timing belt as you are 95% of the way to doing seals when you do a belt of course.
@@mitchmckeiver1429 oh I'll be doing the cam seals regardless. I mean, they came with the kit (as well as the front main seal) so while I'm in there it's just gotta be done.
😳 heard nothing but bad things about these model Pajero's mate hate to say it. Good luck 👍
The widebody NL? I haven't heard anything specific about these having massive issues.
@@KaldekBoch ok maybe it's the next model then, or the diesel version always doing head gaskets..
Own the same car in the same colour
Now I want to know who Goldberg shacklestein is.
