- The race you are about to see appear as originally broadcast and may contain imagery that is offensive and doesn't align with NASCAR's values. NASCAR has since permanently banned the display of the confederate flag at all events.
We talk about the finish often, but the 8 car was bad fast the entire race. Even if the events of February didn’t happen, he deserved to win that race. An incredible race from start to finish.
Brings me to tears every time seeing Michael and Dale hug it out on top of the cars...this was such an awesome NASCAR moment.
Truly an all-time classic
Truly a great closure moment for Dale Jr. RIP the Intimidator!
We've been blessed to witness some of the greatest racers and greatest races of all time. This is certainly one of those races.
So true!
Gotta love Benny Parsons enthusiasm at the end
I don't know how many times I've seen this, but I still get chills and tears, especially when Dale sees Chocolate being the first one to him
if you were to introduce nascar to someone who has never watched a race, this is the race you show them
@JGR4LIFEBoth in my opinion
Shortlist is this, the 98 500, 2000 fall Talladega, 03 Darlington.
I'm showing bristol 99
Add Dover 2008 and Atlanta 2011@@Pensfan5919
The 1979 Daytona 500 is a good example too.
Strangest thing is that Kevin Harvick is the only driver still racing who was in this race.
And now he’s retired too.
@goldenshark3182 true. The last one standing is now retired.
That's a timeless classic.
The only night the commentary team broke the rule of not playing favourites, everyone wanted the 8 to win that night, even if you were not a fan
Nascar please bring back Metallica to the broadcasts 🤘🏻
I Hope You Can Add More Classic NASCAR Races From The Xfinity And The Craftsman Trucks Series In The Future And Add Some More Races From CBS Sports And TBS Superstation. P.S This Race Was Truly An Instant Classic!!!!!! BEST. RACE. EVER!!!!!!!!! Nuff Said!!!!!!!!!
2001

👍
The best Super Speedway package hands down
NASCARS not even the same anymore… I remember seeing this race as my first and I was hooked from then.
2001. My favourite Pepsi 400 of all time. Apart from 1997.
Dale Jr had a cheat motor given by nascar for this race. You can tell how he can keep up with the leaders with no help
LOL nah
Nascar did the same thing for dale sr in the 98 daytona 500. Nascar fixed a lot of races to make the chevys look good.
Nonsense
Gave the race to junior obviously
LOL you are brainless!
👍 8 🍻 🤜🤛
Why would people use the flash on their cameras? Those cars are way too far away for the flash to do anything. LOL
I miss no stage breaks
I wishnbc bring back the fuel theme
269- likes, nice
And no one finds it suspicious that Jr's car was obviously faster at all times on a 100% full throttle track where each car is handed a restrictor plate? Lol.
Some people find it suspicious.
Lol of course. It was a scripted race. Just as 20 years after Dale won the 500, Austin Dillon and the #3 wins the 500. 20 years to the day. Then in 2001, when WINLESS MICHAEL won the 2001 Daytona 500, a WINLESS MICHAEL mcdowell, won the Daytona 500, 20 years to the day. (#34 car also appropriate, as Dale won 34 races at Daytona). I can go on and on, but this is a billion dollar business, not an organic sport.
Bingo. Like Austin Cindric in the #2 Car winning the 2022 Daytona 500 on his owner, Roger Penske's birthday on 2.20.2022? lol @@yrakcaz3064
@@markusgoodson153 Notice Josef Newgarden of Team Penske won the Indy 500 this year, then later that day, Ryan Blaney of Team Penske wins the Coke 600, and celebrates exactly how his cross teammate did, by running into the stands. And people think this shit is real? Comical to me.
Denny Hamlin #11, wins the 2019 Daytona 500 for Joe Gibbs Racing, after Joe Gibbs son dies the month prior on the 11th, JD who was credited with putting Hamlin in the #11....(Got to like the Joe Gibbs Racing 1-2-3 finish on top of it for the cherry on top :) @@yrakcaz3064
This was the day I became a dedicated Nascar fan. Jr was my driver from here.
Still gives me chills 22 years later.
Same...I was at this race as a casual fan...left a diehard
Best, most emotional and inspiring race of all time ❤
Those were better times...
Great memory!
Something about the sound of the restrictor plate cars of this era, gives me chills hearing them again.
watched it live in 01...still has the same feels.
I remember as a 5 year old jumping out of my chair I was so happy. No question one of greatest moments ever in Nascar. He did it for Dale ❤️☝️☝️☝️
One of the best calls of the finish to any race by allen bestwick. The goat. He needs to get back in the booth.
I'll remember where I was for this race until the day I die
Where if you don't mind sharing?
@@stevorules1820 we had just moved to another state but we went back to our old neighborhood to visit that weekend and we watched it at an old neighbor’s house. Nothing too exciting lol
I was in a hotel room in Oklahoma. Couldn't sleep afterwards. What a race.
When NASCAR's morale was fully restored 😄
And then, NASCAR went on to restore the morale of the NATION, with Dale Jr. winning at Dover in the race after 9/11.
This victory will always will be emotional
Definitely one of the most iconic wins in the history of motorsports, whether you were a fan of junior or not everyone was pulling for him that night, definitely couldn't have scripted any better. Plus seeing Waltrip get to celebrate this time considering he really didn't get one when he won the 500 in February. RIP Intimidator
Michael Waltrip is 2nd, but it’s going to be Dale Earnhardt Jr! Using lessons learned from his father to go from sixth to first and score the victory in the Pepsi 400
People say it was fixed, but they had to get Junior's car right.
Oh, they " Got Jr's car right" for sure 😂 anybody who didn't see this coming was blind...
It was the easiest payday of 2001.
The most memorable NASCAR race in the history of the sport.
The 98 Dayton 500 should be up there also
One of the greatest endings in the history of racing
This race still makes me a bit sad that Dale Sr wasn't there to Celebrate all his sons accomplishments and his teams he worked so hard to build, I was a die hard Sr fan thru the 90s and 2000s I followed racing religiously with every thing dealing with Dale Sr and Dale Jr, I was 14 in 2001, me and my dad bonded thru following and watching racing and he was a die hard Dale Sr fan to, I still like to think about what could've been if we never lost Dale Sr. This race did help all of us heal, and Jr did a hellava job.
I remember this race like it was yesterday. I grew up a diehard Roush Racing and Mark Martin fan and Ford. I remember I had a sentimental feeling hoping Earnhardt Jr could win the first time returning to Daytona after his old man died and wondered how cool that would be if he could do it. Well he sure did it. What a night that was.
I don't care what anyone says. Except for that one terrible moment in Feb, the '00-01 superspeedway package produced phenomenal racing. With that wicker going across the top of the car. And it proved that you don't have to have wrecks to have great racing. The spring Talladega race that Bobby Hamilton won proved that. Great race, Zero cautions. I miss this package
It was definitely the best and most exciting aerodynamic package NASCAR had probably ever put together no doubt.
Love this part. TNT/NBC hadn't done any full races prior to this weekend, so they didn't even have a starting grid song yet! They just use the post-solo breakdown from Metallica's "Fuel".
One of my BEST memories ❤❤❤
The fact you did this, is an absolute W NASCAR. This kinda thing isn't free in the F1 space.
NASCAR... Bring this aero package back!
I remember watching this race with my parents and sister downstairs in our game room. I was only 8 years old at the time. Great memories and I’m pretty sure we still have the VHS copy my dad recorded that night.
Greatest race in NASCAR history
Time capsule i remember watching this as a 9 year old im 31 now
Greatest infield celebration ever. jR;s Major League Baseball All-Star car, is the only Die-Cast car I own. I have 2 million dollars worth of Baseball stuff, and that car sits right in the middle of it all.
Man, the cars sounded awesome
They didn’t just sound awesome, they were awesome and had more horsepower than the stuff they drive today.
Man.😢
23 years later, this is probably one of the most emotional wins ever in NASCAR history. I was born in 2004, but man, it still tears me up. 😢
Fun Race. BUT...
We knew there was no way on God's green earth that Nascar was gonna let ANYONE but Jr win this race. NASCAR NEEDED it to happen and they did not disappoint. That 8 car had 116 laps lead not even at full throttle 😂
Waltrip placing 2nd was a nice touch!
DREAM endings are called that for a reason; because you have to be ASLEEP to believe it...
I've heard rumors that, in the driver's meeting, everyone was told, if and when Dale Jr got the lead inside the final 10 laps, don't pass him.
A legendary night to remember
Michael Waltrip say Nascar Thunder 2003 in lightning challenge daytona 900? I called backstabing Dale Earnhardt jr
Back when nascar was worth watching. Before the stupid stages when they raced the whole time and not just drove around the track till the last 5 laps of the stage.
I missed the way these cars raced. Used to be able to get a run and get out of line and pass by yourself
To me this is the best nascar broadcaster this century, allen, bp, and wally
Matt yocum was the only broadcaster that was both on nbc and fox from 01 to 06
I love the sound of the plate cars from late 90's clear through early 2000's
Man I don’t miss listening to Wally at all 😂
Bestwick sees whats happening
The best thing about this race and all of the classic races for that matter is we don't have to hear "Here the white flag brought to you by Credit One Bank".
2024 and i tear up. that turn 4 pass for first right where sr lost his life was special.
👌
Not 60 fps. Come on guys....
how do you expect them to make it 60 fps? with ai that only ruins the quality of the video?
that race was soooo fixed
This comment is so asinine
it's so obvious that Jr had about 35 more hp that day then everybody else. don't get me wrong, I loved seeing him win, made me tear up when it happened... but it's so obvious.
Excuses
I wonder when nascar rigs a race like this if they make the winners car like a super car or they downgrade all the other cars?
Stupid Comment
They give orders to the drivers to not pass certain cars. And let jr run an illegal engine.
Yeah that makes sense
We knew there was no way on God's green earth that Nascar was gonna let ANYONE but Jr win this race. NASCAR NEEDED it to happen and they did not disappoint. That 8 car had 116 laps lead not even at full throttle 😂
Waltrip placing 2nd was a nice touch!

The most rigged race of all time. Not one guy even attempted to block JR in the final restart. Orders were given
Stewart tried to.
@@cameronchesters5300 and was black flagged.
@@yeti1682 for going underneath the yellow line to pass. Not for blocking.
Clown Take
100% fixed race
The main thing I remember about this is nothing from watching that race on live TV yet I was born 9 years later but I do remember seeing a clip of it saying that Dale Earnhardt Jr used lessons learned to go from 6th to 1rst in the Pepsi 400
My favorite call, between the moment, Bestwick's fervor, and the fact that it isn't just about Jr. finishing this chapter since the 500, but also because it mirrored how Dale's final win was the year prior at Talladega in the fall.
@@Pensfan5919 then at Daytona the next year...
It was a chance for all the earnhardt fans to have a reality check and it was like a reset button in life.. a lot of ppl loved dale.. he might of had the most fans ever honestly.. he was are legend in the sport that was still good as shit and he was gone in a blink of a eye. But this race everything set in... and all of daddys fans started putting that red and black on with a different feeling behind it. They could finally catch their breathe.. if this isn't the greatest race ever because of the story and racing.. it's definitely the most memorable
7:47 pace car pulls/green flag
Will ya cry tonight?😂😂😂
The most rigged Nascar race of all time.
Just because something popular and Legendary happened doesn't mean it was rigged
One of the stupidest comments ever
@@hotwheelzvette959no but this race was rigged.
It certainly was not.
@@hotwheelzvette959 I agree with you too
