You look just like Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, in this outfit. And the false rump is absolutely adorable! As if you can't already tell, I love period clothing that puts some emphasis on the bum.

I’m sure the majority of the gowns are made to be sold or commissioned, but I would love to see a series of children’s clothes made throughout history. Not sure how easy they would be to sell but I think it would be absolutely fascinating.

  • @joanneaugust6611
    @joanneaugust6611 Рік тому

I had a perfectly fitting lining. Then I attached it to the main fabric of the bodice and suddenly there's gaping everywhere. So far I've spent around three hours sewing all parts of the bodice together and eight or ten hours troubleshooting - and I'm only just beginning.
I think the issue is that I have a small bust, so if I pull the fabric closer together to lie flat at the bust, it will gape at the shoulders and crease in the waist. So I think I need to stitch the top part of the outer back seams a little more tightly to make sure I flatten the material at the bust without effecting the rest.

    Miss Prior Attire!
I spent most of my working years sewing, the last 18 years in a small tailoring shop where my boss, his dad, and I worked on anything that would go in a machine, and quite a bit of stuff that just had to be hand sewn, there was just no other way, or it was just truly the easiest thing to do. Aside from mens suits, and only some parts, the only time we would see things even close to made with the techniques you've shown here, we would usually say no, just because they were so old, when you opened them up, you could grow things in what fell out!
So it's been a real treat for me to see this video, to see a garment made entirely by hand. Too bad it's not done anymore in this throw-away time. People just don't realize the feel of a real quality garment, and how much more flattering they are to most body types. It should also be mentioned that when you do this amount of work, you are not going to use cheap fabrics, and it all goes to how wonderful this type of garment is. No wonder you enjoy wearing them!
Thanks for sharing, maybe it will inspire a new generation to take up this worthwhile art.

All of what you do drives 1000s of questions. Fabrics chosen, threads, special shops for these items as well as trims etc.? I could go on for hours! Could you give us a glimpse into how a young modern woman has learned this wonderful skill?

I chuckled when I read the part about pleating being more difficult and eliciting curse words when you were less experienced. My husband’s grandfather was a carpenter and builder. He was also what my dad called a “shade tree mechanic” (something that modern cars with the expansive electronics has made impossible). When he’d get frustrated, he’d curse. Grandma used to tell hubby and his siblings that Grandpa was “blessing” his work. 😂

Before the invention of the sewing machine ...all clothing was constructed in this manner. Alterations must have been a nightmare when a lady gained or lost weight....hence the use of pleats was a necessary evil in construction techniques....I had often wondered about the construction of those tight bodices and the plight of the dressmakers of yesteryear in keeping ladies attired in their "tailor made" dresses. Such an inspiration! My Great Grandmother sewed all my Gammy's little fancy dresses by hand. Gammy said her needle hand was a blur and the stitches so tiny you could hardly see them. However, she used a thimble and I'm amazed that you're able to manage without one. My hand sewing was annointed with blood, sweat and tears but even so, much more satisfying that fighting the machine.

In comparison, how long were dresses sewn during the Regency era compared to the 18th century? I had this assumption that since Regency dresses were made of cotton or linen and had simple decorations, I would assume that they took less time to make.
Also, you look like as if you're from a Gainsborough painting.

  • @carolynallisee2463

I am no needlewoman, though I have made a couple of skirts, all hand sewn. It is easy to forget that not so long ago, if someone wanted new clothes, they had to make it themselves rather than just buying it off the peg. You need a lot of patience and considerable dexterity for all kinds of needlework, and though I have the former, I do not have the latter ( I might just as well be endowed with sausages rather than fingers for all the dexterity I have!) So I take my hat off to anyone who has both the skill and patience to make not just ordinary clothes, but the clothing people once wore.

My brain is definitely for training animals, not sewing. You have a gift for this as I cried somewhere at the first pleats from being overwhelmed at that work! 😂

Absolutely gorgeous. Is the bodice boned at all? It lies so beautifully flat in the front.

The outfit and workwomaship is awesome. And to use a term from the 60's, everything, including the marvelous hat, is Boss💖👒✂

An impressive display of skill. But, I'm not quite ready to give up my sewing machine.

OMG! Did you say this dress took 50 hours to sew??? You must have the patience of a Saint! I'd be sewing it on my sewing machine, never mind hand sewing that dress! You are amazing! ~Janet in Canada
