- The artisan scissors-makers (known as ‘putters’) at Ernest Wright, Sheffield, explain some of the physical qualities, characteristics and crafting processes that go into a fine pair of handmade scissors - as well as providing some background on Sheffield’s steel and cutlery heritage.
This short film by Toby Essex follows putters Jonathan, Neil, Sam, James and Tony on a scissors workshop tour, as they carry out scissors-making processes including inside bow grinding on flexible belts, putting-together, flat-grinding, and grinding blades using a stone grinding wheel mounted on a saddle grinder. I used to collect a lot of various mass-production scissors, because they would stop cutting over time and I had to grab a new pair. Since purchasing my Ernest Wrights, that has stopped and it seems that now I have the only scissors I will ever need. I look forward to ordering the large shears and adding them to EW collection.

I’ve just received my second order & love these scissors! Where do the raw scissor halves come from? Who forges them & is that also in Sheffield?
Some patterns are forged in Sheffield in the late 80s and early 90s. Others are forged in Germany and Italy as usual for 100+ years.
A good video, but it didn't move me as much as the original video they made a few years back, when the 'old boys' were still making them (ua-cam.com/video/PWRw_6StpQQ/v-deo.html). Truly, that was a great video, even just thinking about it now moves me.
I could not agree more - the original video, instigated by Nick Wright to record the skills employed , it went viral. What followed is well documented and the business is on a much firmer footing. I suspect that neither Nick or Shaun, both no longer with us could have foreseen what impact the video would have to this very day.
