Tønsberg - Norway's oldest town and Slottsfjellet castle ruins, 4K

- A nice but rather windy day in Tønsberg. We are at Slottsfjellet, a hill by the city center where once one of Norway's largest medieval castles stood. A fortification that was important for several hundred years, from the civil war period in Norway in the 12th and 13th centuries, until it was destroyed during a revolt in 1503. The castle was never rebuilt and much of the stone was used by the people of the city for their own houses. The tower on Slottsfjellet is a well-known landmark here and was built for the 1000th anniversary of Tønsberg, that is considered Norway's oldest town and is probably founded before the year 871 according to written sources.

En fin men nokså vindfull dag i Tønsberg. Vi er ved Slottsfjellet, en ås ved bysentrum hvor en gang en av Norges største middelalderborger sto. Et forsvarsverk som var viktig gjennom flere hundre år, fra borgerkrigstiden i Norge på 1100 og 1200- tallet, til den ble ødelagt under et opprør i 1503. Borgen ble aldri gjenoppbygget og mye av steinene ble brukt av befolkningen i byen til egne hus. Tårnet på Slottsfjellet er et velkjent landemerke her og ble bygget i forbindelse med 1000 års jubileet til Tønsberg by, som er ansett som Norges eldste by og som sannsynligvis er grunnlagt før år 871 i følge skriftlige kilder (Snorre).

I bet that castle looked amazing back 1000 years ago, after seeing the model I can easily visualize it in your drone footage. Norway’s history is very intriguing to me, the Vikings are awesome and they were the first non indigenous to discover Canada!

It’s so incredible that you have these places to visit. Between your drone footage and the modelled castle, I can get a true sense of how this structure would have looked, so many years ago. Great video, I really like the history and cuts to the diagrams and old photographs. 👍🏻

I envy those in UK and Ireland where there are lots of old castles and historic places. I have some thoughts on where to go. But it needs some planning and time.
The flight is very smooth. You are a good pilot. I always say, Norway is a safe and calm, clean but cold country.

Winter may vary, but I prefer a little snow with colder temperatures on minus side to avoid wet and icy conditions. This depends on where in our long stretched country you are. 😉
