i spent a week in a costa brava town in 1975. A fishing village/tourist town for lovers.Surprise, the fishermen were very important to the town. Every morning the fishermen would put some of their catch out. They went out early early and were back before the sun rose. My hotel/cafe served two meals a day for grand total of $6.23 per day. granted i walked to my room. Not part of the cafe building. But the cafe was right off the cement board walk that trailed along the boardwalk/beach. Every night I ate the fish that came from those fishermen. One night paella. my first time trying a prawn with all it's body parts. At night couples would stroll to the top of a huge hill for the sunset and eat ice cream and strawberries on the way down in a romantic cafe. A wonderful place to spend with your bride, spouse, or lover. I was alone but i have this to remember.

J Pla books are almost 100 years old. His writing is the result of the slow observation of things in the environment. Let no one look for a high pace of fast-paced action.
As a Catalan, I think you have made a good description of its essence and I thank you for mentioning the context of our language at that time and that unfortunately many neo-Francoists would still like to silence today.
This was a surprise to find, i was writing something exactly similar about my own little corner of the world. I know at the end of the day it's very dull for everyone but i just love books that keep records of times and places. Like you said, Cliff, it's a historical document. I just wonder if It would be possible to write things like this while being as engaging as this book's best parts, keeping its documentation value and avoiding the dry parts. More poetical parts, maybe? Who knows. Great video!

I share your interest in learning Catalan. I have read this and it reminds me of Patrick Leigh Fermor a bit. His intricate detail and ramblings clearly show a love for his homeland, and I wonder if reading in Catalan would help those passages flow better.

When are you going to read a portuguese book? 🥺 You could start by “Blindness” or “Baltasar and Blimunda” from the literature nobel prize winner José Saramago. Nice stories with a lot of depth and reflections into them. Other portuguese masterpieces: The Lusiads (Luís Vaz de Camões) (but this last one on a heavier side…). All of them with translations to english (even though in the case of The Lusiads, probably you are going to lose something…)

All that matters in Pla is the style, that is, the way he choses his adjectives. After reading Grey Notebook you discover that good adjectivation is enough to make great literature.

Good and fun review! Have you read The Adventures and Misadventures of Maqroll? I read it last year and had a blast. I feel like it's a undiscovered gem. Some scenes from that book are just burnt into my mind like a strong dream.
Josep Pla was a hell of a writer, one of the best in catalan language in the XX century. Interestingly, he also worked as a spy for Franco during the civil war.

Great video, one thing that I’ll say is despite Pla painting a great picture about his surroundings and of fish, some of his writings about cooking and of yet another coastline remind me of an unironic version of Patrick Bateman rambling for chapters on end about Whitney Houston and furniture. Definitely put me to sleep on more than a few occasions.
Franco did the same with the Basque language Euskara, and Gallego in Galicia!!
