He didn’t want to marry her or have kids with her even though he kept romanticizing the idea with her but never doing it, when asked about her in interviews he changed the subject, looked awkward but it’s like you can be private in your reactionship and still show eachother off, be proud of eachother and how your lucky to be the one to have your partner over everyone else. She’s also keeping stuff private with Travis while also being affectionate and talking about eaciother with pride in public. This song would be more emotional if it was about him then some racist sexist ugly weird leprechaun looking dude who she had a fling with for less then 4 months
