    I followed your instructions to make this Playgym two years back. My parakeets and cockatiel loved it.. Thank you for such a brilliant idea

    I made this exact one following your directions and my two cockatiels love it so much! They like it because of how tall it is and how I made it so they can get to the very top. I used self adhesive sports wrap to give the birds grip on the PVC poles. Thank you!

      Wow! That's great! I'm very happy to hear that your cockatiels enjoy it. I tried to convince my twin to let me make her the same gym, but she's kind of a minimalist, and wanted me to do this instead: ua-cam.com/video/x2EDsjAfYcY/v-deo.html I'm going to make one for my conures soon!

    The pipe surface is a little slick for the birds to grasp and climb. To remedy this, I got some double-sided tape, wrapped the tape around areas like the long poles and the food cups and toy perches then got some of that medical tape that sticks to itself, cut the tape width in half and wrapped the tape over the double-sided tape with a little of the ends of the tape overlapping the end of the pipe so I could cover those with the cap. We'll see how it holds up. I think it'll be fine for awhile. I hope my birds don't want to knaw it apart into little pieces! Another way to handle the surface is to sand it and put notches in the pipe surface.

    • @XoletteLife
      @XoletteLife  4 роки тому

Then there's the ones who think their way is better tho they're not willing to make a video or share with you. Basically on a video like this, the dislike button signifies "I'm stupid click here" lol.

    Honestly loved the video thanks for the inspiration but I REALLY need more details for example- I have no idea what kind of food dishes those are? I've only ever had the kind that attach to the cage directly so it has like, a very short (greater than 1/2) bolt with like a washer and a nut to install it with. Anyone else possibly have a suggestion?? Cause I've already been googling and cannot seem to search for the right thing lol thanks!

    • @XoletteLife
      @XoletteLife  7 років тому

      sharon beedham I'm not sure what you're talking about. You should just build it and see how it goes from there. This was just my design, and it was made on the fly-- not planned out in terms of measurements... I just had a rough sketch. You don't need to follow these exact instructions-- be inspired by it and make what fits you and your parrot.

    Ty so much! i recently became the mom of a grey and was wondering if I could just change the pipe to 1"? Would the dimension be the same or should I increase it?

    • @Xolette
      @Xolette 10 років тому

      Good question... the dimensions of the gym is made to fit my tray. If the pipes for the "base supports" are too small, then your tray won't fit. Because the PVC connectors might be larger, then you might need to adjust the following measurements (but keep all the other measurements the same):
      4 Short Base Supports (19 cm or 7 1/2")
      4 Long Base Supports (26.5 cm or 10 3/8")
      2 Cross Supports (36 cm or 14 1/4")
      2 Steeple Leg A (8 cm or 3 1/4")
      2 Steeple Leg B: (24 cm or 9 1/2")
      When you do adjust, just make sure everything's the same size, or your gym will be...lopsided.
      However, if you are not planning on using solely PVC perches, you can still use 1/2" PVC for the entire gym-- just make sure that when you buy perches, you get ones the appropriate diameter for your African Grey. And FYI, you don't need all the perches to be a uniform diameter-- it's good to have varying diameters for your perches so your bird's feet gets some exercise (and it mimics what they'd have in the wild). You can have a few small diameter perches to a few larges ones... and then have perches that are mostly the correct size for your Grey.
      I found this online in case you're interested:
      "A variety of perch sizes and materials is essential for African Greys. In his bird cage, [my African Grey] perches on items ranging from 1/4 to 4 inch in diameter that are made of metal, wood, rope, acrylic, stainless-steel chain, coconut, high-impact plastic, bird-safe rubber and a few other materials.
      I was always amazed at my African grey’s ability to find the thinnest perch in the cage to stand on. You would think that a pet bird would choose a sturdier perch, wouldn’t you? My point is that African greys don’t just perch on their perches. Whether they are upside down or right side up, African greys will perch from almost anything in their cages that they can put their feet around."
      I found that exrcept her in case you want to read more:

    Very impressive!
    Question 1: It looks like the water dish might actually be hanging out beyond the boundaries of the wire drawer at the bottom, is that correct? But even if it is within the boundary, you're going to have water splash that falls beyond the boundaries of the wire drawer? So, is the entire gym placed inside a larger container at the bottom, e.g. a plastic container?
    Question 2: I like the stop motion animation. Did you do this using photos? Or did you continuously film it, and then only select frames that you had stepped out of?
    Question 3: What software did you use to create the final stop motion animation?

      Whenever the birds take a bath the water inevitably goes everywhere, even if I angled it dead center of the gym. When the gym is disassembled, the pieces will fit in the plastic storage container. I took pictures using a wired remote. I now have a wireless remote called the RC-6 which works better when doing this type of video. I have a video on this remote. I used Cyberlink PowerDirector for the stop motion animation as well as to edit this video. Thanks for watching and good luck!

    I am curious. You have two different versions of this play gym in the video. One with a single 90 degree elbow and one with two 45 degree elbows. What are the measurements for the more stable one with the 2 45 elbows at the top? Thanks.

    • @Xolette
      @Xolette 9 років тому

      I don't have those measurements, as that gym is now at my parent's house, but you can simply make the "steeple" pieces shorter to accommodate having two 45 degree elbows. Just eyeball it. :). Good luck!

    We have 3 cockatiel, 2 lovebirds and 5 parakeets and so we are looking for a play gym and your's is great! Someone asked about their cockatiels below and you said you would assist in setting up a play gym for cockatiels - how would you change up your play gym to accommadate the medium to smaller play gyms? Thanks.

    • @XoletteLife
      @XoletteLife  10 років тому

      jen ica I think the size of this play gym would work fine for cockatiels, lovebirds, and parakeets. If anything, you can use smaller diameter perches, but this would work fine. I made the "frame" of this gym according to the dimensions of the plastic tray (that catches bird poop). You can design a different frame that suits your needs. :) I'm planning on making another gym, but it'll probably be twice as wide as this one... if you do make a different play gym, just make sure the appropriate pieces are the same size or your gym will be lopsided. :) Best of luck!

    What size bowl is that? How many ounces is it? I'm in the process of making my bird gym. I would love to include a bowl too. I'm adopting a green cheek conure. :) this bird will be very spoiled haha

    • @Xolette
      @Xolette 10 років тому

      I used two different sized bowls. There's a standard size and a smaller one. Either way, the size of the bowl doesn't matter much. If you find that the gym is leaning forward from the weight, you can always shorten the PVC segment it's on (called "Toy Hanger") to make a stronger base or you can just screw it onto the actual structure. Best of luck, Jackie and hope your spoiled conure loves it!

    I’ve made the gym and it looks good but my cockatiel is terrified of it. Is there any way to slowly introduce her to it?

    • @XoletteLife
      @XoletteLife  6 років тому +1

      Screaming Leaf Parrots are neophobics (afraid of new things) so that's normal. My Meyer's parrot took awhile to get used to it and eventuallly fell in love with it. Birds love to be as high as possible and our gym had the highest perches in the room. You just have to give your cockatiel time, treats, and put toys/perches that your cockatiel loves on the gym. Don't force your cockatiel on it until she's ready. It may take a few days to a few weeks. The cockatiel will eventually learn that the gym won't kill her, especially if you allow her to associate treats with the gym. I'd let her perch on my hand, talk softly to her, and give a treat-- get as close to the gym to where your cockatiel is comfortable with and close that distance daily until she's ready to perch on it. It may even help for you to rub your face on the gym to show her how comfortable you are with it (we do that with toys sometimes for our bids). Hope that helps!

    • @thomascrohan7810
      @thomascrohan7810 8 років тому

      In other words, do the birds have a tough time gripping the PVC pipe? PVC pipe has as very smooth texture so I would wonder if the birds have issues walking and gripping the pipe or do they do fine? Sorry if that's confusing lol I'm trying to explain it as simple as I can

    • @Xolette
      @Xolette 8 років тому

      +Thomas Crohan I use the PVC only as a frame to hold perches so they have no need to walk on the PVC. Others that have used PVC as perches will wrap it in tape so it's less slippery. I don't know what kind of tape they use though.

    How do u fit the 10ft PVC pipe in ur car? I have everything but those

    • @Xolette
      @Xolette 10 років тому

      It fit fine in my Scion xB. But if they're too long for your car, you can make sure you have PVC cutters with you and cut them down in the parking lot so you can fit them in your car. (Alternately, you can see if an employee will help you make the cuts.) My advice though is to make the cuts you need so you don't waste any PVC. For example, you can cut 3 of the "Long Base Supports" (26.5 cm or 10 3/8") off the ends of the three 10 ft PVC. Good luck!
