Welcome to the Letterman UA-cam Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. These highlights have been artisanly-produced, carefully-curated, and chosen completely at random by an old computer that used to pick numbers for the New York Lotto back in the 90’s.
During the afternoon rehearsal, Laurie thought she had the go-ahead to let the safe drop. So dropped she did. But it was too soon, and she gave a sheepish grin as Dave, seated at his stage desk, just smiled with a small giggle.
So the crew had to find another disposable (and just as heavy) safe for the taping, and fast. That’s the reference behind Dave mentioning a second safe.
Don! You're a legend!
I love how the Dave mannequin is still standing at the end, thinking mysterious thoughts despite chaos and melons being rained down around him.
Dave is the best,I miss him and his show so much.
Tossing stuff out the window / off the roof, and the hydraulic press were always my favorite bits from the old days.
I miss David's crazy stunts that made late night TV fun to watch.
I would really love to see the original Late Night segment (not the anniversary clip version) when Dave threw a pinata filled with baked beans off a five-story tower. It changed my life.
The one were they dropped a tub full of chocolate pudding lives in my head completely rent free
NOT THE PINBALL MACHINE!!!!!
TILT!
Genius switch = ON! 👍
There is no off position.
Throwing that pinball machine out the window haunted me for a long, long time. Some of those super-bounce balls may still be bouncing to this day. You can never go wrong with cans of paint, or watermelons!
Legend has it they're still finding Super Balls outside the Ed Sullivan building.
lmfao
Yeah, I know. Apparently Colbert's staff found a whole bunch of them last week. 😆😆😆😆
Word had it that some ended up in New Jersey
Behind Carson he was the best ever and many would agree - what a show - I agree he’s a legend in comedy!
In Holland where i live there was a show (sort of) called 6-pack, they did this too, think they ripped it may be from this. Instead though they would like buy an old valuable clock second hand from people, act like they were real interested in the item, and seemingly be real happy with the purchase, to the delight of the sellers. Then a while later you see them with the item on some sort of high place and making the statement "but how does it drop" and then just drop it, destroying it to bits and peaces. Kinda funny, but, also always thought it to be a bit crude.
the cleanup...
Did that tire get 4 stories on it's first bounce‽
Pretty close. I tried to count as well.
Brushing up on first semester Physics:
"An elastic collision is a collision where both the Kinetic Energy, KE, and momentum, p are conserved. In other words, it means that KE0 = KEf and po = pf. When we recall that KE = 1/2 mv2, we will write 1/2 m1(v1i)2 + 1/2 m2(vi)2 = 1/2 m1(v1f)2 + 1/2 m2 (v2f)2. Thus, we see that the final total KE of the bodies is similar to the initial KE of these two bodies. Moreover, as p = linear momentum = mv, then we will write m1v1i + m2v2i = m1v1f + m2v2f."
The free fall equation is g=9.81(m/s^2)
The second Kinematic Equation is x=(v+vo/2)t
Therefore, the tire bounced pretty dammed high.
@@edkretchmer2167 There is key information at the beginning of that segment, however.
🎶🎵You would not use it's in this case!
As a possessive (No no no)
It's a contraction (Yeah yeah yeah) 🎶🎵
Legend has it the superballs are still bouncing around behind the Sullivan building to this day.
For some reason I suddenly like physics class...?
That tire bounced 30 feet back up - I miss Dave . I been to the studios several times.
If they'd have spread out a canvas before the paint drop, it'd be in the Metropolitan!
Don't try this at home!
Unless you have a TV show...
Those were the day!!!
he is too funny!
i did this at home and i liked it
I screened shot after the paint, it's just like owning a NFT.
Should have done the melons.
This is great, but will it float is all but absent from the internet. Give us a compilation!
"Not the kind of thing folks should be doing anywhere, but if you happen to have a TV show then it's OK."
That used to be the rule - now it's anybody with a UA-cam or TikTok.
Once when I was working construction, went to toss a box out the window and my feet slipped. if it had not been for the guy I was working with grabbing my waistband, I'd a been out that window. my point is that there is a hidden danger to this activity that not even the Late show staff were aware of. this could have been catastrophic!
Call me old (and you should), but I preferred when they dropped stuff off a fire tower up in Mamaroneck (or New Rochelle or whatever). Seemed more subversive.
New Rochelle. And ok, less subversuve, but there's an added layer of that special brand of ridiculous stupidity in closing off a block of Manhattan to do this.
@@gersonkphone I hear what you are saying ... but ... the fact that he (Dave) had the power to do that makes it seem "lesser" ... somehow.
Don't do this at home, friends!
Took me a looong time to realize that was a mannequin
Absolute crime to drop that Spider-Man-themed pinball machine out the window. That's worth at least $3,000 or more today in working condition. 🙁
It was funny, until they destroyed an "Amazing Spider-man" pinball machine.
Is that a real person standing under the paint can drop?, if so it was foolishly dangerous. 4:07 It must have been a dummy that was made to suddenly move back to make it look real. The dummy was gone for the subsequent drops.
Have you seen the show before?
They dropped a safe on a dummy of Letterman in the clip right before the paint can drop. Didn't you watch the entire video?
Did multiple cans of paint fall from a seventh floor window onto your head recently?
@@candre241 I don't remember.
