Still cannot BELIEVE Gone Girl wasn’t nominated. It was my fave movie of the year so I woulda given it everything but the screenplay was the best aspect for sure.
Gone Girl was so disrespected at the Oscars in 2015. Only 1 nomination for Pike is just crazy. Not getting into Best Picture, Director, Editing, Actor, Supporting Actress, Cinematography, Score and Adapted Screenplay is just ridiculous. The movie made almost $400M at the box office and is sitting at 88% on RT smh.

I really like The Imitation Game. Sure, Oppenheimer’s better, but I really enjoyed the thrilling story and the wonderful performances, especially from Benedict Cumberbatch. The ending is also very moving, it’s a tragedy what happened to Alan Turing.
It’s funny, because I know a few of people personally who really love The Imitation Game. I haven’t seen it yet, but my brother saw it recently and said he personally enjoyed it more than he did Oppenheimer, which he also really enjoyed.
Gotta hard disagree on Jojo Rabbit. Not a perfect screenplay, but an utterly original one. I still think about the shoes scene, and the Heiling 😂 That said, I deeply loved Little Women. I just think we should put some respect on Jojo
Here’s my rankings: 10) Argo 9) Jo Jo Rabbit 8) Imitation Game 7) Big Short 6) Call Me By Your Name 5) Descendants 4) 12 Years a Slave 3) Black KKKlansman 2) Social Network 1) Moonlight
My ranking: 1. The Social Network (Not just the best adapted screenplay of the last decade but the best screenplay of the 2010’s hands down!) 2. Moonlight 3. 12 Years A Slave 4. BlacKkKlansman 5. Jojo Rabbit 6. The Imitation Game (Great script but still sucks that Gone Girl got snubbed there.) 7. Call Me By Your Name (Good script but unpopular opinion, Logan was my pick to win there.) 8. The Descendants (Good script but I think Moneyball should’ve won.) 9. Argo (Great script but my pick was Silver Linings Playbook) 10. The Big Short (Steve Jobs should’ve been both nominated and won!)
You make a good point that The Imitation Game was “safe” and “well-made,” but the same could be said about Call Me By Your Name. Ivory’s adaptations completely sanitizes Aciman’s novel, omitting the bulk of its erotic content and dialing down Elio’s hysterical neuroticism.
I don’t think his neuroticism was dialed down, rather I think it’s just harder to understand what Elio is thinking since movies are more visual. I do agree that a lot of the erotic content was omitted, such as the poop scene (I don’t think it would have fit as well in the movie)
I'll try to rank the original ones before you do: Her Parasite Birdman Get Out Manchester by the Sea Django Unchained Midnight in Paris The King's Speech Spotlight Green Book
Oh boy, I think this is the first of these lists where I've seen all contentenders! 10. Call Me By Your Name (written by James Ivory) 9. The Imitation Game (written by Graham Moore) 8. 12 Years a Slave (written by John Ridley) 7. BlaKkKlansman (written by Spike Lee, David Rabinowitz, Charlie Wachtel and Kevin Willmott) 6. Moonlight (written by Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney) 5. The Descendants (written by Nat Faxon, Alexander Payne and Jim Rash) 4. Precious (written by Geoffrey S. Fletcher) 3. The Social Network (written by Aaron Sorkin) 2. Argo (written by Chris Terrio) 1. The Big Short (written by Charles Randolph and Adam McKay)
The first half of Argo is brilliantly written and Alan Arkin has a couple of killer lines. Then the film becomes rather conventional. Jojo Rabbit, on the other hand, is a film that I consider virtually impossible to make, a perfect combination of parody and drama about a child who wants to conform to a sick society (my favorite adapted script of the decade). We can all agree on Sorkin, he is the heir to Paddy Chayefsky (who he actually mentions in his acceptance speech) but his latest scripts are not that good.
The Social Network is such a deserving win. I wish it won BP and Director for Fincher but Weinstein was still too strong. Sorkin’s is also one of the best speeches I’ve heard
Moonlight was extremely captivating in a way, but there were five words in the whole movie. I'd nominate it for best 16th century period piece before I could nominate it for screenplay. I'm sorry.
I feel biopics screenplays can be either alright or decent or trash because you’re really just telling a story of a life with no real frills or creative ideas, really just stuck in the borders or a real history

I really like your commentary in these videos, even when I disagree. As someone who has been teaching for 25 years I must say I disagree with your praise of "Whiplash." The movie purports to be about a great teacher, but no great teacher uses intimidation and fear (and violence) to bring out the best in a student. A lot of people walked away from the film thinking it was saying something profound about teaching, but it wasn't. It was saying something false.

Moonlight is such an incredible film. It still has its hooks in me to this day
I really like The Imitation Game. Sure, Oppenheimer’s better, but I really enjoyed the thrilling story and the wonderful performances, especially from Benedict Cumberbatch. The ending is also very moving, it’s a tragedy what happened to Alan Turing.
That score is magnificent
I’d put Call Me By Your Name first.

I loved The Bjg Short. It took an abstract concept and made it accessible and entertaining.
Jojo Rabbit is my fav here.
Imitation Game was so well written, and the suspense was there, not to mention how the hero was treated by the end.

The Descendants is so underrated and I’d argue Clooney should’ve won Best Actor and Woodley was snubbed for Supporting Actress
Moonlight, Social Network, and CMBYN is easily top 3.
I personally preferred The Imitation Game over Oppenheimer because I fell into the protagonist’s soul
Was gonna say the same. Imitation Game is awesome. So intriguing. I watch it all the time.
the score and benwdic cumberbatch’s performance were tremendously unbelievable
The Big Short works better when you read the book. The visuals in the movie help augment the story really well. I love Argo.
The first half of Argo is brilliantly written and Alan Arkin has a couple of killer lines. Then the film becomes rather conventional.
Jojo Rabbit, on the other hand, is a film that I consider virtually impossible to make, a perfect combination of parody and drama about a child who wants to conform to a sick society (my favorite adapted script of the decade).

whiplash was in the same situation as sling blade, only difference it actually beat out the english patient which i feel is cool! 🎅
Really shocked with how you felt about jojo rabbit. I love it, one of my favorite films in the last decade but to each their own.
