Are you interested in asset management? Why or why not?

You nailed this video! I’ve been in asset management for a few years now. I enjoy my job. Solid pay. You didn’t mention bonuses tend to be lower than acquisitions. But the job is more or less stable. I live in my dream city on the west coast but I travel all around the Midwest for work to smaller cities. My travel is 25-35% of my job. I was not prepared to be a people person but I’ve grown into it. I’m constantly being compared to underwriting bench marks that were set 4 even 5 years ago and are absolutely useless in today’s world. And our underwriting even on new deals is unrealistic IMO but we buy the properties anyway

So many valuable pieces of information here - I hope other people watching this video scroll down and see this. I totally understand the underwriting benchmark issues from 4-5 years ago, too - AM is not an easy place to be in 2024. Thank you for taking the time to post this!

Awesome video as usual! I’ve seen some of the top AM Analysts/Associates have the opportunity to switch over to Investments/Acquisitions. The switch from Asset Management to Acquisitions or even Portfolio Management (at least early on in one’s career) tends to be easier than other roles in REPE in my opinion. Thanks for everything Justin!

I've been in Asset Management a while( outside the USA). Your video today alighns to a T on what my roles have been , thank you.
What career options are there after AM here in the USA? I feel that after AM , I can only pursue specializations which lean towards acquisitions or structured finance/syndications

Many asset managers progress within larger companies into portfolio management roles, where they're working more on fund-level strategy and capital raising/investor communications. If acquisitions doesn't sound like the right fit and you don't want to stay in AM, portfolio management could be something to consider.
      Good luck!

Hard to take the pay cut from IB, but the lifestyle sounds so much more attractive

I haven't worked in IB myself, but from everything I've heard, this is accurate.
