I planted more Bur Oak acorns in Rootmaker root pruning pots. I collected my Bur Oak acorns last fall and stratified them in the fridge over the winter. I planted them in my germination seed mix including Osmocote fertilizer this year. I will follow up this video with updates as the Bur Oak Acorns begin to sprout

There are some excellent videos on this channel, including this one. I've learned a lot from them and I hope you post some updates soon.
Until then, I see many comments asking how to store acorns over the winter. According to Dr. Carl Whitcomb (who he mentioned in the video), acorns can be dry-stored in the fridge in a sealed container such as a ziploc plastic bag, mason jar, etc.
HOWEVER: white oak acorns (such as bur oaks like in this video and swamp white oaks) should be dried and stored at temps between 34-35 degrees. Technically, white oak acorns do not need cold stratification and can be planted immediately once harvested. In the wild, white oak acorns will often germinate shortly after falling from the tree. So if your storage conditions are slightly warmer and moist, then your acorns may start to germinate prematurely while in storage.
On the other hand, red oak acorns (such as pin oak and northern red oak) are more forgiving. They can be dried and stored at temps between 34-40. Since they require cold stratification, they shouldn't germinate prematurely while in storage.
Hope that helps! All of this info and more can also be found on the RootMaker website under the "Knowledge Center" tab.
i have bur oak acorns in my fridge now, theyve been there for 5 weeks, im gonna pull them out in about two weeks and plant them in pots
Can you speak more to when/how long you put them in the fridge? I have acorns I want to plant that I just gathered from burr oaks in Oct/Nov.
I could do that. we have a lot of oak ha acorns, I find them growing in my worm castings. ha thanks for the video guy.!
You should give it a try, squirrels are the biggest u=issue!!
What if i took them out of the shell? Can i still grow them? I grabbed 4 burr oak acorns and kept them for a couple of months before putting them in the grill to stratify outside. They were rattling inside. I took them out and they are black. Will they still grow? Maybe i should soak them in water?
Do you not put them in peat moss in the fridge over winter? I have seen some people who do and others don’t and was wondering which way works best.
What kind of trays are those and where do you purchase them?
Here in Texas, hiw do you protect young sapplings from the intense heat while they are in pots?
I’m wanting to grow some bur oaks. I have access to plenty of acorns. When I store them in the fridge do I keep them moist or dry? Or can they be planted right away?
Keep in the fridge, moist, over winter.
Why did you take the hulls off? Do the acorns need to be kept in the refrigerator over the winter?
Im trying to find a Burr Oak to get acorns from in Tomball Texas :)
