i dont give a shit about last.fm, this is one of the best albums of the 90s and they should be on par with Flaming Lips notoriety. They never were. This was later on in their lifespan, too. hometown heroes.
Listening to it again today here in New Zealand. The Deserters Songs album is one masterpiece after another but this is the track that worms its way into your brain! Also try "The Darkness is Rising" of All is Dream.
The greatest song ever. An absolutely brilliant song. I literally can't praise this enough. It literally sends goosbumps down my spine everytime I hear it. Fuck me it's amazing. Thumbs up if you agree.
This song is for my Deppy sister who passed away when I was 9 years old. I remember her listening this song that last summer of 2002. She was a goddess on a highway, a goddess in a car...🦋
I'm Sorry to hear about Your Loss Maria, recently i heard this song in the End Credits of the Movie "GunPowder Milkshake" & immediately looked for the track. i can imagine that its a Beautiful Song & why your sister must be listening it to as well
this is a nice song may it give you some consolation and good memories - I myself lost my cousin last year at a motor accident - music brings us close to our emotions
@@akshaykumar-bw4si Heard it there also, and immediately loved the song. SO came here looking for it. What an interesting movie that was, very unexpected, and a great song.
@@akshaykumar-bw4si It means Bear Little in the native American Lakota language. There are multiple ways it is spelt. I spelt it this way so people say it correctly. So, the native name I was gifted, in english, is LittleBear. Mahto, Mato, matto. All different ways people spell it, and the little part has a TON of different spellings, this is just the one I chose
I was at Reading Festival 2002... Suffered my first proper heartbreak there... On the first day of the three day festival... Just before Mercury Rev came on... Who I think were the first band on stage that day... I was already in tears when they came on, and then they decided to play this song... "And I know it ain't gonna last"... I cried soooo very hard that weekend... Soooo very hard.
One of the top three singles of all time, my other two being Wire's outdoor miner and the Tindersticks' marbles. That officially makes this the greatest single ever released by an American band!
This song was a big hit when it came out, the mainstream radio played it non stop, and the album was considered an instant classic, topping many album of the year lists. At least in the UK, they were considered the coolest band in the world back in 98.
I heard this song in a movie theater lobby. Loved it. Found out the band and song name and immediately ordered the cd. Hoping the rest is as great as this.
when i first listened this song back in 1999 I just came out of one relationship and in to another I listened to the lyrics "and this aint going to last" I was with her 16 years, 2 kids a house later and the lyrics were right it never lasts. brings a tier to the eye
Well, I got us on a highway, I got us in a car Got us going faster than we've ever gone before I got us on a highway, I got us in a car Got us going faster than we've ever gone before *And I know it ain't gonna last* *And I know it ain't gonna last* *When I see your eyes arrive* *They explode like two bugs on glass* Far above the ocean, deep under the sea There's a river running dry 'cause of you and me Far above the ocean, deep under the sea There's a river running dry 'cause of you and me She's a goddess on a highway, a goddess in a car A goddess going faster than she's ever gone before She's a goddess on a highway, a goddess in a car Goddess going faster than she's ever gone before
The video is a visual allegory of the lyrics. If you don't get it I guess you could think it a bad video, but given that it's not particularly subtle (authority smashes your liberties and hands you a flag) I'm not sure that's an acceptable excuse. The goddess in question is Liberty, who in the 90s was indeed going faster than she's ever gone before, and just look at us now. Mercury Rev were right, it didn't last.
It’s a perfect metaphor for today. At the end the one cop hands him a flag while the other cop, with a billy club clears the roof of his car of the Statue of Liberty.
I love this song. I was listening to this album when i went to disney when i was six. (i'm 15) everytime i listen to this album i feel weird, sorta trippy, cuz it reminds me of my first time on a plane, i don't know, it's just weird
bobbiwib I think this album got a lot of people through bad/worst nights. This album got me through a worst year of my life. This album was meant to be and released at the perfect time. That is all
So, I was watching (and loving) Love and Monsters, and heard a snippet of Opus 40, and it reminded me of this great song from one of my old road trip playlists.
I think some songs should never have been written, whereas others were somehow there all along since the dawn of time, waiting for the right band to turn up and pluck them out of the ether and dropped into our world to astound us. Quite obvious to which camp this unfathomably wonderful song belongs.
Benito Curato I said he was an idiot on another video so he decided to reply to all my comments on Google+ with that paragraph. I think I hit a nerve or something.
+Bakla Firoz It's "cue". As the internet is a global community i won't call you dumb, gotta assume english is second language most the time so can't expect all people to know the (often subtle) difference HOWEVER if english is your first language and you don't know the difference between 'cue' and 'queue"... please just look it up and don't be a dumb-arse forever. sorry but that was such an error it had to be called (no dispute or care about content of post)
any other song with this video would suck, but with this song a blank screen would make an awesome video, i hope that made sense, just had magic going through my lungs
At the time “Deserter’s Songs” was recorded, Mercury Rev believed it would be their last album and would recede into quiet thereafter, hence the lyric “And I know it ain’t gonna last”. Fortunately, “Deserter’s Songs” was a critical and commercial success and the band continued and made more great albums.
The fact that only one million people have listened to this in 16 years is perhaps the crime of the century!
Gunpowder Milkshake ROCKS this song back into LIFE🥳
I came to listen because of that movies
Lol me too
I'm here from the movie too
Ha, I'm of the same mind as the first few comments , Gunpowder Milkshake brought me here too. God Bless Shazam 😂🤣👍
Just watched it and felt the same
What an underrated song. Love it.
It's second on lastfm. It is not underrated.
Second on what last.fm category?
Agreed
Probably because nobody knows what the lyrics mean.

The greatest song ever. An absolutely brilliant song. I literally can't praise this enough. It literally sends goosbumps down my spine everytime I hear it. Fuck me it's amazing. Thumbs up if you agree.
Yeah it's a great song but the best song ever is 'monster mash' by Bobby 'Boris' Pickett & the crypt kickers
Not the best or even that close but it is a very good piece of songwriting

Yeh I saw them years ago at a festival in Scotland, blew me away 🙌

Just look at the lyrics for Holes. Even just the ending tells you the whole story "Bands, those funny little plans, that never work quite right"
@@predeterminedmeat5024 that lyric also refers to how frontman Jonathan Donahue left the Flaming Lips due to a dispute with Wayne Coyne.
