Make Nitric Acid without Sulfuric Acid by Oxalate Precipitation
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 сер 2024
- In this video we make nitric acid by reacting calcium nitrate with oxalic acid.
The process is rather simple, dissolve 300g of Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (A common fertilizer) in 1L of water and then dissolve 150g of Oxalic Acid dihydrate in 300mL of water with heating. Then mix the two. A white precipitate of calcium oxalate is formed. Filter this off and distill the filtrate. The distillate will be dilute nitric acid. Fractionally distill that to get azeotropic nitric acid. The yield is around 74%

Thank you for another possible cost reducing nitric opinion.
Hell yeah nurd rage
*heck
yeah science Mr White...
all these years all these nurds. so glad you are still around
im glad there's finally a video on this method, thanks for taking my suggestion and making a really good video on it
Thanks for suggesting it!
Interesting method. Since I can get 25kg of Sodium Bisulfate for 42,99€ with free shipping, I'll stick to that method if I need nitric acid.
As a bonus on top of better cost effectiveness, you get fuming nitric acid directly, which is always easier to dilute to regular nitric acid than the other way around.
Hi Nurd.Funny that you posted today as just made Nitric with calcium nitrate and sodium Bisulfate (Pool supply).Looks like it worked.Just waiting for it to cool off and then will test. Thanks for your help again.

Great video! I always love learning new pathways to get useful reagents, and this presentation is another outstanding example!
I look forward to trying this for the experience! Thank you!
Yay! Nice to see my suggestion from 2 weeks ago actually implemented. And it works better than I suspected! Thanks for doing the legwork for us.
Absolutely love these short but well described videos on the process. Thank you master!
This works great for me as I’ve got 20kg of calcium nitrate, and probably close to that amount of oxalic acid
Just as i bought some oxalate for other stuff. Def gonna try this!
Superbissimo !
Never saw that process, anywhere in history.
It'd have won the DAC hands down ;)
Glad you are making these again
Apparently, 'They' don't like the people having anything nitrated to an interesting level!😮😊
Highly nitrated things tend to go "bang", and 'they' don't like people having things that go bang unless they know exactly who has it and why they need it.
Great video. Nitric is a pain to get.
Beautiful and interesting video as always. Keep up the amazing work!
Sir this was really awesome procedure and honestly I didn't expect that will end like this. Extremally helpful tnx :)
I love to see you make a jar of pickles 😅
Just what I needed
Man watching the precipitate just appear like that was mesmerising
good to have you back !!

That was brilliant

Best hold off on any glycerol videos after this for a bit perhaps... :P
Excellent. May need to try this.
TYy.... yet I would simply buy it! Greetings from an M. Sc. of chemistry....😉
The insolubility of that calcium oxalate is amazing.
Cleaning your equipment must be tedious.
@@Kargonethcalcium salts are hellish to filter.
My kidney stones have been consisting of Calcium Oxalate, so it's pretty innocuous in the envronment.
Love this channel, especially acid videos
An excellent approach! Thank you !
You are absolutely the best
Dude, this is amazing!
use nitric acid to make oxalic acid to make nitric acid. (that might even be a good option cause while making oxalic acid NitrogenDioxide forms and you can win your nitric acid back).
not a bad idea, but i worry about losses. The process for making oxalic acid and nitric acid isn't perfectly high yielding. So you may end up with less than what you started with. But worth experimenting with if you have a good gas capture setup.

is it possible to make nitric acid from diesel exhaust I seen a bus smoke is red (i am a mechanic ) can i bobble it to water and i get nitric acid?
Yes, it's really dilute and crude though. But since you're working with a lot diesel, it might be a viable way.
Yea probably . But its important that the vehicle doesent have a catalytic converter otherwise the nitrogen dioxide will decompose into nitrogen and oxygen wich is useless
Finally you made it thanx man
Nice. I still like the sodium bisulfate and calcium nitrate dry method
It's always nice to have options. 😀
Thanks. Have you heard anything about Elemental Maker? I haven't seen him post anything in ages. I enjoy your content!
How about a Pauling furnace ?
Sure it is inefficient , and while it would still require workup of the product , just like any nitrate salt route , it can run continuously instead of just doing batches with relatively spendy ingredients , filtering , etc ..
The beauty of this and electrchem in general , is you do not need grid power .
An off grid solar setup can easily be used for a dedicated lab not directly subjected to the whims and fortunes of the local power company .
My idea too.
This method i think will work to prepare (not pure) chloric acid from NaClO3 too if some CaCl are added to remove the Na2C2O4. Chloric acid decomposes on heating. However, they do not described to what extent in dilute form and whether production can be based on this. If it can be decompose down into perchloric acid by a simple method, it would be very valuable for everyone to make perchlorates without platinum, PbO2 and high temperature heating in a inert material. HClO4 from HClO3 a easy way without platinum and complicated methods would be much more valuable in amateur circles than nitric and sulfuric acid. If it were possible to show success in this regard, it would be a sensation in amateur circles.
Could you distill without filtering out the calcium oxilate first?
Bondex wood bleach is oxalic crystals if you need it. Might not be sold anymore, I haven't made blond walnut in ages.
Thanks for the awesome videos
Weird how this doesn't work with carbonate but it works with oxalate
Absolutely awesome though
It's much easier to get oxalic acid as some laundry stuff where I live and it seems to be cheaper than sulfuric acid so I will definitely be trying this eventually
Can this reagents be melted together without water?
You should try copper nitrate waste version too,😃😃
probably easier than electrolysis method
probably, but considering copper oxalate is extremely difficult to filter, it might be an issue. I'll see what i can do.

After everything that happened within the past 24 hours I am so glad to see a nerd rage video your timing is impeccable😢
Have you considered sourcing oxalic acid by extracting it from plants that contain it? Plants such as Oxalis and several others are a natural source. Would make for a fun video to watch.
Is there any easy way to recover Oxalic acid back from CaC2O4 ?
Hello. Home friendly method, interesting. Thanks.
Can the salt and the oxalic be added as powder, mixed thoroughly, then heated to obtain pure nitrix acid? Nile Red has a video doing that with sulfuric acid and some nitrate.
I'm very late on this video, wouldn't it be possible to do something similar with an acidic ion exchage resine ?
Those can be regenerated to.
Bisulfate is much cheaper for me, but i hope this works for someone
yeah, same here. But it really surprised me just how well it worked. Definitely someone out there will benefit from this method.
How useful. !!
I'd be interested about the biochem synthesis: the -ase for Krebs cycle bioproduct; but more so for the synthesis from metabolizing ethylene glycol (which is super cheap raw material).
The fact that vapor decomposition results in CO2 + Formic Acid makes me wonder if there is reverse process to this: prob bubbling the CO2 into formic acid in presence of a metal catalyst?
Just some thoughts. Keep up the great work
It is way more cost effective then sulfuric - salt method
If zinc acetate dried on a cloth prevents silver tarnish in long term storage what is the equivalent to protect polished copper?
Those little anti-tarnish papers sold for jewelry protect both metals (and alloys). I'd like to make them if I could, for pennies.
Thanks in advance if anyone knows.
I wonder if ammonium sulfate would work
Great timing. 😅
What oxalates has to do with sulpheric acid , btw makjng formic acid from glycerine on oxalate releases a smell ,let me say uts the nastiest smell ever ,always turn a vent on not a fan but vent
Will this work with H3PO4 and Ca|NO3|2? are the Ca salts of H3po4 easy enough to handle?
I wonder how acidic and oxidizing a hot concentrated mixture/solution of calcium nitrate and oxalic acid can be.
Maybe one can use it as crude concentrated nitric acid for etching and other applications!?
Yet, oxalic acid is hardly cost effective in comparison with bisulfate, as you probably won't recover the oxalic acid from the oxalate waste. Only then it would have an advantage imho, but you would probably need/use sulfuric acid then anyways.

Please do nitric acid preparation by Ostwald oxidation
Nice. Now I need a video to synthesis oxalic acid. Sadly in the UK, oxalic acid is a regulated poison and you need an EPP licence to get it over 10% concentration.
you can it extract from clover.
Barkeeper's friend brand cleaner has oxalic also
Nice
Someone read my suggestion hahaha. Thanks!
Thanks
Thanks so much!
Anyone at first glance think "Wait, he's gonna make nitric acid out of milk?"
Looks good at first glance , by my enthusiasm quickly soured .
So could you use this dissolve gold by driving the formation of aqua Regia in situ by adding the salts, gold and oxalic acid?
I mean, sodium nitrate, sodium chloride, oxalic acid and gold.
Maybe you'd need a little acidity to get it started?
Or maybe add a small amount of say iron chloride and nitrate to form some initial acid.
Nurd! Cool viddy.
Still waiting for the oswalt process
With transition metal catalysis 😅😊
I trust that you know what you're doing, but I don't understand why you distill to dry and collect all of the distillate in one vessel. Are all waste products at that stage dissolved solids?
Hell yeah nurd rage [2]
Hey NurdRage i buy nitric acid yesterday and the clerk say that my nitric acid is not higher than 68% because 98% concentration nitric acid is illegal, but when i open it have a white fuming which is sign of really concentrated but when i weight it just had 121gram per 100ml of it. That mean my nitric acid just have concentration around ~40% but why it fuming though, do you have a explanation? Thank you.
Banana Ballistics?
So you would slowly drip the nitrate solution through an oxalate filter (reducing the water by like 1/2). Soo.. sourgrass. Sourgrass, you can use a bundle of sourgrass as a filter 😁
Well that's it, now I need some CAN.
HELLLLLLL YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH❤
Can you concentrate nictric acid 3% by boiling? In the EU you only get 3% nitric acid, but it is useless for recovery gold.
Yes you can , but it is very time intensive and would take a lot of 3% to get a meaningful amount of azeotropic nitric acid .
Using either the oxalic acid or bisulfite routes is a whole lot more efficient .
Of course , you may be prohibited from merely possessing nitric above a 3% concentration , let alone making it , but that is a different matter altogether .
Shouldn't the distillation favor the more volatile nitric acid?
I.e. oxalic/nitric acid equilibrium, oxalic can't evaporate, while nitric boils over, i.e. some dilute nitric acid on the other side.
It does, but at high temperatures the oxalic acid reacts with the nitric acid, which is why it needs to be filtered off.
I've seen a video on YT showing the synthesis of hydrochloric acid from NaCl and boric acid, would that be possible with the nitrate counterparts?
So, now all that remains is to find a field of sorrel thickets somewhere!)
Oxalic acid is sold as wood bleach in almost any hardware store.
It removes dust stains because iron tannate is black but iron oxalate is clear.

How much cheaper is this vs buying of the shelf acids?
It's not cheaper. But you may live in a country where those acids are unavailable or require special permits or licensing to obtain, alternatively you might just like the science and what to try making it. But in general i don't find making acids cheaper than buying them directly.
What would you say the concentration of that initial clear nitric acid was?
About 9%

The opposite is probably more likely .
But it looks like you won't run out of work anytime soon .
Like taking 1 flyswatter to Africa ...
Does It work with every nitrates ?
no. it does not work with sodium or potassium nitrate. It's best done with calcium nitrate. In theory it should work with iron nitrate or manganese nitrate. But stick with calcium nitrate since that's easiest to get.
@@NurdRagewhy won’t it work with those two?
they don't precipitate
@@NurdRage thank you, came to that conclusion as well. Thanks for the upload 😊
