What's even funnier is that Leslye, despite seemingly associating herself with them, completely misunderstands the Sith. If Qimir's supposed master, Darth Plagueis, had heard him in that scene in the forest, he'd have murdered him on the spot. Because Qimir is not a Sith, he's a Dark Jedi more like Set Harth (a Dark Jedi from Legends, look him up).

This is a person who wanted to absolve herself of her deeds in life by changing the definition of what is good and bad. That way she can tell everyone else that they are not angels either and somehow this will make her better. And on a side note, she really wanted to destroy George's Star Wars and try to take it for herself. I think she thought that after this, she would be considred the new boss of Star Wars and she could do what she wanted with it.

@@6trillionmilesReally? Greg has an opinion. Some will agree, but some will disagree. The problem comes out when people who are smug, arrogant, etc., state that they are right and those who disagree are wrong. That happens on both sides of the aisle. Having an opinion is one thing. Stating an opinion is right -- and therefore stating any contrary opinion is wrong -- is not only narrow minded but highly narcissist Just like every human being, I have opinions. While I have a right to my opinions, there is no rule that says anyone of my opinions RIGHT. And if I am putting myself out there saying all of my opinions are RIGHT, I'm putting myself out there as God.
Um, no. I am not God. But I still have the right to voice my opinions. At the same time, however, anyone who disagrees with me has the right to challenge my opinions. Here's the rub: When I explain or defend my positions, what is the response? It's one thing to say I disagree with you and Here's why, as opposed to engaging in bashing and name calling. Again, this happens on both sides, but when we're not willing to engage in constructive discussion, what happens is the us vs. them disaster. We're right, you're wrong, and if you don't agree with me you're not only stupid, you're evil. Again, really? Stop listening and we become even more stupid, intolerant, and so called superior.

    8:22 - Hilarious.... and sad
    14:29 - Perfect example of Headland's upside-down morality
15:16 - To be fair to Headland, this is a true sentiment. It reminds me of the line from Solzhenitsyn in The Gulag Archipelago - "The line between good and evil runs through every human heart" (paraphrased, because I don't remember it verbatim).

  • @pedroares6562

I think that is one of the huge issues, that moral ambiguity makes hard to know who are you rooting for. The Jedi? The boring twin? the most boring one? The sith who killed the characters I like? The bads are the good ones, buit the show focus so much in the good ones that make your interest in the show become non-existant.

Morality according to Leslie…. A group of people mind controlling a being to attack and kill another are just misunderstood. But a person saving multiple lives by breaking that mind control spell and unexpectedly kills the mind controllers, makes them and their institution bad. One made the first move and their actions were to do harm deliberately (good?). One came into defense of another and did harm unintentionally (bad?). WTF Leslie!

Good video. Nothing surprising about Lesley for me, but you brought up some points that I think I'll be chewing on for a bit.
As for morally complex movies, I don't really watch all that many movies nowadays. Games, however? I got a few. One that I like referencing back to is a little rpg maker game called To The Moon. It's about two doctors traversing backwards through a dying man's memories to artificially fulfill his last wish. The deeper they go, the more they unintentionally dig up about the man's past and the forgotten events that had a tremendous effect on him. The moral complexity comes from the two scientists deciding if it would be right to alter the man's memories to fulfill his wish if it means him permanently forgetting someone that was once close to him. The gameplay itself isn't anything to write home about. It's literally finding enough shinnies to unlock the next story beat. But the story itself is worth going through at least once if you have the time to kill.

Leslee thinks she is writing Archane or MHA.
1st: We feel for Powder but we know she is not the good guy and the story and she does too.
But we feel pain watching what caused this downfall into insanity creating Jinx.
From the death of her adoptive father to her friends at her hands in an accident. And her sister's initial disgust and rejection.
And further insanity after being manipulated to the dark side by shimmer lord Silco a revolutionary. Who failed in every way possible to help Zaun. Then full transformation after killing him in a fit of rage.
Then blowing up Piltover with a literal long range nuke. She knows she is not the hero we see this further in S2 (which I won’t spoil).
She wanted to be powder but her sister to see she had changed and wasn't okay. And just pretending it all didn't happen wouldn't help.
A fate easily avoided if someone simply saw she was not okay she wasn't powder and needed to be arrested and gotten help.
2nd: The difference between these two stories is shown also by MHA’s Toga for example we know is wrong and a villain. She is not the hero of this story Uraka & Deku are.
She knows it we know it even though she has the same justification “I want to be myself not pretend to be anyone else to love everyone to become them”.
The difference is we see the pain! That caused her to become so twisted.
As she cries as a little girl finding a baby bird who got hurt and sucking its blood because she thinks it will help it. Her parents vilify her as a deviant
She cried as a teen before going on the run after finding her crush bleeding and losing control sucking his blood trying to help him & just really wanting to become closer by sucking his blood.
NEVER LEARNING HOW HER QUIRK WAS SUPPOSED TO HELP PEOPLE. Because it was A “VILLIANS QUIRK”
And that isn’t what she ACTUALLY DESIRES.
She wants to be allowed to be more than the villain & monster her parents saw her as because they vilified her quirk. A girl with so much love to give and no idea how to healthily show it.
But due to her pain, her view of love gets twisted into obsession. She learns the truth and sacrifices the girl who showed her what love is to save the hero Uraka with a transfusion like Twice did to save her.
But we feel sorry for her for a fate that could have so been easily avoided. If someone listened and tried to understand her.
As shown by how easily Uraka was able to connect to her once they were no longer fighting. The fight was hard not the talk.

Frankly, I feel like Leslie watched Arcane and decided "I wanna do that story too! Except with Star Wars!" So many plot points in The Acolyte feel like they're ripped right from Arcane. The Sisters torn apart by a tragedy. The grey area between good and evil. The toxic father figure. She attempted to write someone else's story set someone else's universe. This lady doesn't have an original bone in her body. She's a glorified Wattpad geek who somehow failed upward into being a showrunner for a major ip. Once again - George RR Martin's open distaste for modern fanfiction is proven correct.

    • @Nguyen-Frogboy
      @Nguyen-Frogboy Годину тому +3

@ Honesty I feel she stole from MHA too that “I just want to be who I am even if it's a monster” storypoint is ripped straight from Himoko Toga.
Just without the realization she was in denial numbing herself to the pain with what was essentially the ectasy of blood.
And “love” because she desired love not understanding the difference between love, lust and hatred. Due to her failed upbringing and lifetime of repression.

I don't think I've ever seen a film or movie that's as morally bankrupted as the Acolyte. Well maybe Birth of a Nation or Triumph of the Will. Granted it doesn't go as hard as those, but it still seems like the same type. It's propaganda to get people onboard with their own degenerate world view. I mean like I noticed this same thing when I watched She-Ra Netflix. They make characters act in such a way that's quite obviously diabolical yet seemed to go completely ignored by its own show writers. Because either A. They're too busy on shipping fuel to notice or B. they had no morals to begin with so its impossible for them to write morality. And I'm just here baffled how someone can write like this.

A great series of essays/analyses on the fundamental flaws of this series and where they stem from (but these observations also apply to a lot of other modern media as well). Leslye Headland's interviews just really further elaborate on her terrible moral relativity but also continually expose the fact that this series seems to be entirely something else in her head than what ended up on the screen. She failed entirely to convey much of what she is waxing so pseudo-philosophical about in the interviews in the series itself.

This is what really kills me about people like Headland or the jokers running Rings of Power. They churn out jr high school level fan fiction but in their own heads imagine that they're putting out Shakespeare. It is just astounding the levels of disconnect and incompetence. If they had an ounce of humility or showed that they had a care about the franchise they are trying to continue that would be one thing. Instead they are like moronic spoiled children giggling as they finger paint over the Mona Lisa and patting themselves on the back for what a great job they did "fixing" it.

5:10 Ah yes, so relatable Leslye Headcase. All good people want the freedom to... take others' freedom away...
Remind me again how you're *oppressed?* Because that sounds like the mindset of an oppressor. In fact, I believe there's an even better word for those who use virtually absolute power however they want - *DICTATOR.*

Clone Wars Season 1 Episode 14 The Defenders of Peace do this “different beliefs” way better!
The Lurmen first were a peaceful village people who refused to help the Jedi fight the separatist but granted them shelter as “you don’t turn away those in need.”
Believing violence of any kind was wrong and what had destroyed many a world in the galaxy.
“That may be your way but that is not ours” The Lurmen Chieftien told Anakin.
But the flaw in the chiefs view was that the separatists were already going to attack them to test their new flamethrower tank.
Just like real life you can’t make peace with everyone. Or as his daughter says “would you have us just wait to be killed?”
“Better to die for our beliefs than have none at all.” The chief simply responded
So they helped the Jedi fight to protect their home all except the old chieftien.
But the episode ends with Anakin and The Jedi celebrating their victory with the Lurmen peeople. “We protected your home the separatists won’t bother you anymore.”
But the chief asks him “we protected our home but at what cost?” The chief says as he walks back inside the ships of the republic pulling into the sector.
This implies that their world became a battleground for the war due to the Lurmens defiance of the separatists.
The question is it ever okay to forsake your beliefs for the greater good. Or is it better to die for your beliefs staying true to what you believe.

Did Lesley Headland direct the episode with the Sith's speech or just write it? I'd assume she didn't direct because the person who did the soundtrack makes it sound like we're supposed to be scared, not like we're supposed to feel sorry for the speaker. LOL.

You can write a show with characters that are unrelatable, but it has to be well-written & character motivations must be clear. And when characters change directions, there has to be a foundation set for such changes. That comes from good writing as well. We can, as an audience, accept immoral characters (they are always interesting) but only if the characters are written well. We don't root for them but we do want to see where the arc goeas. Headland understands NONE of the components of story telling nor character development, never mind that she shat all over Star Wars. I look forward to the Acolyte being removed from D+.
    Sorry for the tldr.
