@Maome kak how is this a money begging video? All they are doing is explaining how they manage their business. Are you not even listening to the video and simply commenting this for fun?
Hi, I taught science in the UK for 15 years. You were definitely a positive influence and your videos inspired many of my pupils. What you have done, do and will do matters. You are appreciated.
This is how a response video is done properly. No emotional backlash or victimisation. Facts and transparency. Seeing that the Bill Gates foundation is responsible for 3% of your funding and that you cut off others in the last year supports your integrity. We should all still take every information online with a grain of salt, but I can comfortably watch your content again after this video. Thank you. Edit: Slight change of mind. They should have more openly showed when a video was funded and their sources for funded videos shouldn't contain research funded by the same organisation.
Same feeling, I really did not like that the conflict of interest between Kurzgesagt and Bill Gates foundation was not explicitly mentioned in the videos, that were sponsored by that instituion, and would to love to know reasons for that, but I really love, that the criticism was not left unattended after all
in my short 10 years on youtube, this is the first time I see a youtube channel try to be as transparent as possible with their viewers regarding their history, situation, finance, values and visions.
Then you haven't seen that much UA-cam. Linus specially during the WAN Show, evey now and then speaks about their process and gives some numbers, without a video dedicated to it, just as part of the regular content, and that is one of the biggest channel groups of the platform. Wintergatan does the same, and the rest they might also drop a "channel update" kind of video. It's not out of character for personality driven channels to show the inner workings, and yeah, talk numbers too.
Louis Rossmann even publishes full, unredacted bank statements, credit card purchase histories and much, much more. As far as I know, he is literally the only big UA-camr who's 100% open and transparent with quite literally everything. + he has been an right to repair advocate in the US for somewhere around 5 to 8 years now, and as of last month he is now finally, FINALLY beginning to achieve results with (if I remember correctly) him being absolutely instrumental in Ohio being the first US state to adopt unprecedentedly broad right to repair legislation, which for the first time ever *includes any and all farm equipment,* so after almost 10 years of blatantly f-ing over farmers world wide, at last John Deere has no other choice left other than to suck it up, bend over, and _TAKE IT_ for once! What a welcome change of pace 😂 🥳🥳🎉 So yeah, if you eeda cool channel to watch with loads of technical coverage and stuff I can highly recommend him. Search Louis Rossmann to easily find his channel on UA-cam if you're interested!
They didn't even go over what they were criticized for. In case you're wondering, it was carbon capture (see Climate Town's video on that) and their general opposition to degrowth (i.e. buying electric vehicles which still cause 40% the pollution of a gas car instead of building places where you don't need a car)
@@jeronimas7148 They explained how they didn't get those ideas from Bill + Melinda Gates Foundation though, as the sponsor could only give ideas for the broad topic (climate change)
@@jeronimas7148 There's no one size fits all answer. Kurzgesagt goes with practical possibilities with the intent to make one think. They don't provide "answers" to anything. If you think degrowth is "the" answer, I have a bridge to an ivory tower to sell you. Kurzgesagt is known to encourage degrowth even if they don't think it an viable answer to the problem. Because.. human nature wants growth. In my heart I want degrowth, but my brain says "good luck, focus on reasonable goals". But that doesn't mean I don't believe in degrowth. Just means that my personal focus is on other things that I reason to be more practical. I'll leave degrowth to others with more inspiration. I still don't agree with them, but I hope they do well.
@@jeronimas7148 I'm prettty sure they weren't critiziced for that one thing. A ton of people got hung up on financing and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and sources and being overly optimistic etc. and all that was adressed. I don't think "oh and we had a different perspective on electric cars, so lets go over that too" would have fit in the video. I mean have fun being super against Kurzgesagt because they said one thing that upset you. But do you agree with kurzgesagt's core value or not? I am a huge fan of climate town channel myself. I can appreciate both. This urge of people needing to find someone they can cancel for the slighest perceived transgression is just so disheartening. Kurzgesagt just is not "the enemy", even if they truly do get something wrong, maybe you should be banging on other people's doors first.

@@GrandPoggers some youtuber made an exposé of this channel talking about seemingly conflicting admissions of where their funding comes from and a lack of transparency in who might control their editorial direction. Kurzgesagt was transparent in this video about funding and editorial direction, and I am satisfied with their explanation.
@@yaseen157 thanks for the explanation. I work shift work so barely read comments on videos I "watch" (mostly just listen), but the title peaked my interest and seen people mention controversy of some kind. I personally never got the impression any of their content was being influenced but maybe I missed a few videos of interest? Anywho, thanks again for taking the time to explain
@@yaseen157 it's eerie going through the comment section of that video. It's full of disillusioned people that are all disappointed with Kurzgesagt without much critical thinking. But half the video is pretty much just badmouthing billgates's enterprises so it kinda lost its plot for me half way through.
@@yaseen157 Kurzgesagt has always said their sponsors have no editorial influence, and the exposé acknowledges that. The real source of the controversy lies in the indirect influence sponsors have. If the the channel wants sponsorships from these institutions in the future, they have to be careful what they say in their videos, and there are a few instances where this can be seen, like how the video on "neglected tropical diseases" implicitly painted the pharmaceutical industry's response as an act of good will instead of a way to expand their influence and profits. Also, the exposé noted that Kurzgesagt has a tendency to neglect to explain who their institutional sponsors are, and often only mention the sponsorship at the very last second of the video, when most viewers will have already clicked off. Even in this response, they kind of brushed past the issue, and failed to address these particular aspects altogether. I can only hope they try to do better in the future, but there's still reason to be skeptical of them.
It brings me such joy to learn that Kurzgesagt was inspired by Crash Course World History, a production of Hank and John Green. Those two have had such a big hand in my passion for learning and Kurzgesagt has only further amplified that. Actually, they often use Bill Gates-funded sources and studies to tell the audience Bill Gates's position on different problems. For example, they dismiss completely the academic battle between the degrowth concept and the "green growth" concept and tell the audience that "green growth" is the only viable solution.
Your sober and informed optimism for the future of humanity is truly moving. Thank you all for being a force for good in this world. I am so jealous. Native English speakers often do not realise how huge learning competitive advantage they have early on in life in the time of the internet. In the last three years I spent countless hours with my now 5-year old girl over the Kurzgesagt calendars, and she often watched videos with me just liking the animation and being curious about what they say but, alas, not being able to speak English, a wonderful source of inspiration and knowledge like this is simply locked for her. I wish technology soon gets to the point that all the videos will be automatically narrated in any language :-)
@@edempsko You could start teaching her english through mediums that she likes but also have to engage with. Believe it or not, I never had any formal english education and I learned by playing games at 6 years old (particularly AoE II) which forced me to learn the context and meaning of what was written on-screen. Just like that, I suddenly understood english, far better than my peers.
I am thankful for that teacher who was so passionate about her topics it inspired her students, and that led to a channel that also inspires other people.
@@thomasmcgrath8568 regarding how they compile the research for their videos, there's a link to an article they wrote on it in the desc, maybe that might give some more info? @@alphaxfang from my point of view this is more about the " critisim generates views easier" point. Every Video I saw criticising their BG funding had completly surreal Idealismus of what the World should look like while at the same time piggybackriding on KGs success. Non of their Videos had even close the number of views as their critising Videos had and non had even close the Produktion value of even the first KG Videos. It's just monetizing on Internet drama with the hypocritic side product of at the same time criticising monetized Videos.
@@thomasmcgrath8568 "Most of it was about their founder and their success story"? Only 2 minutes of this covered that which is hardly "mostly". By minute 4, they already talked about where their revenues came from. They said how their in-depth process for research is in a link in the description. The BG stuff, they said that the topics they use funded by BG were topics THEY---Kurzgesagt, not BG---suggested. If BG had an influence, it's most likely more on approving these topics, not providing them. They even mention that it is only after the video was made when they tell the sponsor. This whole comment of yours made me question if you actually watched and *listened* to the video or if you did and just let your worry and paranoia take over. Paranoia about information is well and all but it's also not well and all. As a viewer, it's in your discretion to fact check information you consume. Also, that "explain why kurzgesagt isn't influenced by grants" is the same as "explain how it is" because you basically cannot prove either of them. What you think is "proof" is speculation. It's like saying you giving them donations means you have influence over their content. Donation is still funding after all. Being skeptical is fine, but running assumptions (saying "who says they aren't", "what if", "maybe", "i don't trust what they said") as proof isn't good either. That's how conspiracy theories start and actually muddles up facts.
"Pessimism often sounds smart and gets more views while optimism can sound naive, but this is a bias that is not helpful for us as a species." ... love you guys so much, currently I am learning to become a teacher and I aim for my classes to be as entertaining and insightful as your videos, I will work hard to achieve that goal and hopefully I will be able to not only fully support you but also to co-work with you in the future! Good luck on that. But remember, always do promote healthy discussions, multitude of opinions and free thinking amongst your students. I've grown up being fed up of teachers dictating what's right and what's not, while being totally nonchalant about their jobs. Hope you'll be a positive change. :)

I think most people know how complicated it is to run and fund a channel or project across multiple platforms of media, and yet to simplify things, this video basically addressed everything in a less complex way. It’s just what Kurzgesagt does, simplify complex topics that people want to know more about
This channel (and other channels alike) really are the biggest reason for me to love science and not look at the world as if it’s gonna end! Their work is amazing, and that one teacher did the world a giant favor
you know what, hat happened to him with the teacher, was like me discovering his videos. It’s a loop but from one person to another, to millions from that one person
I think it’s going to become increasingly important for individual viewers to rely on themselves to be discerning about content. Kurzgesagt makes high quality, entertaining content, and it’s okay to turn your brain off and just enjoy it. But it’s also important to be discerning about how they make it, and attach your own asterisks to it as a personal responsibility. Congrats on 10 years to the team! May you educate us for many more.
I remember finding you guys during the end of my high-school years (2011-2015), funnily enough, because of channels like Crash Course and SciShow. Crazy to see how big you’ve gotten and the astounding leaps and bounds your animation and presentation quality continue to make over the years. I’ve learned so much from the channel and have turned many friends over in turn. An absolute force of good on a platform and world that’s become increasingly polarized and commercialized. Thank you!
If my teachers had presented content in the way you do, I would have enjoyed school much more. Keep doing the good work making people interested in science.
Yeah, but like they said in the video, these videos take an entire team to build. It’s not reasonable to expect your teacher to do 40 hours a week and somehow produce these for the the class, or do a million hours of background research for a story about it.
@@nicksgmail9663 well if everyone at a school district worked together to use these kinds of videos on their schools then it would work I mean that would be hundreds of teachers working together
Brilliant: being optimistic is definitely not mainstream. Doomsayers get the doomscrollers. Thanks for your focus on explaining science and retaining a humanist frame. Love the transparency and the pushing back against ignorance.
The issue is that we are doomed, saying otherwise is insane. Sure, us in the first world countries will be fine but climate change is going to kill a LOT of people and create huge suffering. Being optimistic is real insanity.
I appreciate the optimism and I too believe Kurzgesagt are well intentioned, unfortunately they are not doing a good job. They should stop upholding capitalism and economic growth over the climate, what you perceive as optimism is them saying "yes 3 degrees will be devastating but we will endure". I would too like to convince myself that Kurzgesagt just doesn't know the consequences of 3 degrees like: destroying poorer countries, bringing mass migration to the western core which will lead to the rise of social fascism and most likely genocide. I unfortunately can't convince myself that they aren't actively ignoring these points. Is "humanity will endure" really an optimistic argument? They are liberal capitalists, they are a German company, they uphold the systems that served them so well which I understand, I just wish they took the extra step to acknowledge how capitalism brought this to us, and upholding it won't fix the problem, it's actively delaying it

in my short 10 years on youtube, this is the first time I see a youtube channel try to be as transparent as possible with their viewers regarding their history, situation, finance, values and visions.
@YOEL _44 seen a few others as well like disguisedtoast, somewhat asmongold, iwilldominate
What a welcome change of pace 😂 🥳🥳🎉

the amount of transparency is remarkable and makes me respect this channel even more
They didn't even go over what they were criticized for.
@@saiph8007 of course they didn't. However, I doubt if they would've used literal sentences from the Gates' book if they weren't sponsored
@@jeronimas7148 I'm prettty sure they weren't critiziced for that one thing. A ton of people got hung up on financing and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and sources and being overly optimistic etc. and all that was adressed.

What controversy?
@@GrandPoggers some youtuber made an exposé of this channel talking about seemingly conflicting admissions of where their funding comes from and a lack of transparency in who might control their editorial direction. This youtuber in question also attacked kurzgesagt's use of "ourworldindata" (a point I don't agree with so I didn't really care about their criticism here).

Thank you for your transparency and honesty.

Yeah, but like they said in the video, these videos take an entire team to build. It’s not reasonable to expect your teacher to do 40 hours a week and somehow produce these for the the class, or do a million hours of background research for a story about it.
Each video takes 1200 hours to produce.
Also, they don’t go really deep into the subject.

That's true, but it is reasonable to expect countries to make better learning materials
@@nicksgmail9663 well if everyone at a school district worked together to use these kinds of videos on their schools then it would work I mean that would be hundreds of teachers working together
@@nicksgmail9663 of course invidual teachers shouldnd do it.
Brilliant: being optimistic is definitely not mainstream. Doomsayers get the doomscrollers. Thanks for your focus on explaining science and retaining a humanist frame. Love the transparency and the pushing back against ignorance.
It's just game theory, the internet algos are optimised for views and doom and destruction attracts more eyes...
They are liberal capitalists, they are a German company, they uphold the systems that served them so well which I understand, I just wish they took the extra step to acknowledge how capitalism brought this to us, and upholding it won't fix the problem, it's actively delaying it
@@Sebasu Socialist detected, opinion rejected.
@@Sebasu " I appreciate the optimism" then types the most pessimistic thing imaginable lmao
