Man, when I first played this as a kid back when it came out, that opening scene blew my little mind. X and Green Dude rushing the factory, lasers flying past them, Green Dude getting hit and falling back before exploding, the music building to a crescendo as X straight ghostrides that whip right into the Cannon Driver and knocks his ass down... Really set the tone for the rest of the game. X2 was by far the best of the X series in my opinion.
I LOVED the first 2 X games. I remeber when X2 came out it was right on my birthday. Still remeber eating super cheesy and greasy pizza while playing x2. Best birthday ever. X3 was ok. Didnt measure up to the other 2
Before Megaman X2 came out, We have the Blue Megaman, and a Red Megaman, we need a Green Megaman, then Capcom just scraped it up and replaced with Axl in later sequels.

It sets you right into a fight (despite it being just one immobile enemy), making you really feel like a heroic main character making his cool entry.
