In the manga it's mentioned in an side note that Sesshoumaru ages slowly because he's a youkai. He's 900+ years old, but mentally/physically 19 by human comparison. Many of the manga fans saw them as siblings, because of their ages, 19 and 8, and because Sesshoumaru does find Rin to be irritating and annoying but he'll drop everything to keep her safe, but he'll make Jaken do all the parent stuff: playing games with her and scolding her when she misbehaved and gathering food. Many of the father/daughter fans are under the delusion that Sesshoumaru is 30 and Rin is 5, and heavy bullied the fans of brother/sister or friends or follower/master theory to the point they harassed people to the point of being fired from their real world jobs. Most father/daughter fans are from the USA, the rest of the fandom figured out that the kimono's that Sesshoumaru gave Rin at series end were courtship gifts, the audio cd episode when Sesshoumaru proposes to Rin is cannon. Rumiko Takahashi stated in the making of Yashahime that Sesshoumaru waited for Rin to be his wife.
