In the rush to go to trial, Prosecutor Miro was under tremendous pressure from the Judge to conclude the investigation - he was being threatened with arrest. Paco and his co-accused had been detained for months, but they still had no evidence. After rounding up a dozen people and openly paying them "reward" money, they tried to get their stories straight. The first lawyer to interview them was NOT convinced at all.
