- Elizabeth Bennet (Jennifer Ehle) recieves Jane's letters talking about Lydia's elopement with Wikham and gets desperate. Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth) arrives just in time, but he can do nothing... One of the best sequences from 1995's BBC adaptation os Pride & Prejudice.

5:15 The way he struggles when she breaks down, tells us everything!!! The acting is out of this world!
I always melt when I see him first holding her forearm/wrist then briefly caressing it!
The feeling that washed over her when she said goodbye believing she had forfeited her life and lost one she had truly fallen in love with.
Absolutely love how proud Hannah ( the servant girl) is to announce Mr Darcy. 😍😊🥰
lol she knows Darcy is in love
The acting in this version of P&P is sublime. Notice Darcy’s tiny flinch when Elizabeth says “You know him to well to doubt the rest.”
Indeed
I also love how he holds her hand unthinkingly after he sits her down and his reaction when she starts to cry (after 5:15).
Yes, indeed, not only an excelent cast but very true to the style of that time.
Collin Firth is a wonderful actor.
@@AnaVerona_as is Jennifer Ely.Both just right
Hats off to Jane Austen. This scene is brilliantly conceived. It ends with Darcy leaving without explaining his intentions, which are to track Wickham down, and prevent a scandal. But Lizzie naturally assumes that the news of Lydia's elopement has made Darcy determine that he can no longer marry her.
It takes him awhile to leave. I think he's unsure . finally he bolts up off the couch and leaves.
The choice of scenery is PERFECT. Feels and looks very close to the imagery of the book.
I liked this version a lot. The actors for Lizzie and Mr. Darcy were great.
Very great surely!!!!!!!
It somewhat breaks my heart that Jane Austen was able to write romance so well, but was never able in her own life to experience and enjoy true and everlasting love and marriage.
indeed, for someone who is full of love...
Jñ
Personally, she was better off spending her time writing and hanging with Cassandra than risking her life having a bunch of kids in a day without good birth control and without good OB/GYN care.
@@seanwalsh5717 I hate to be cynical, however, you are right. Marriages weren't that happy back them. Even as far back as my grandparents day marriage was horrible for women. Women were slaves to men.
@@seanwalsh5717 That is such a narrow minded reply and so ridiculous it's laughable!
I just love how Darcy handles this! So sweet. And to think he was likely coming to propose again. It’s unfortunate Elizabeth read his leaving as some kind of rejection towards her.
A truely heartbreaking scene. Poor Elizabeth...
Yes but during that time period Lydia's actions would have disgraced the entire family. And they would all be shunned by anyone respectable for it. So Lizzie assumes that Darcy's silence and abrupt exit was to distance himself from her. In reality, he felt guilt that he never made Wickham's character known and he wanted to protect Lizzie from being disgraced by her sister. So he left so he could solve the matter as quickly as possible.
Mr Darcy goes in to full James Bond mode and is gonna hunt Wickham down!
I just cannot watch any version of P&P than this... I watch it often.... There is only 1 Mr Darcy and Colin Firth will be the only one for me. XX
This was the best cast and finest interpretation of P & P ever. Just superb work. ❤️
by far the best P&P- in fact, the best TV period drama
That soft “No, no.” Darcy is a good man.

Elizabeth displays the whole situation so clearly that Darcy gets an immediate idea about the downfall for him and for them both.
If only the 2005 movie has more scenes of these 2 characters together. Even more intimacy would’ve been great.
I know right. These actors worked perfectly
They were once married.
No. Just use your imagination. You don't need more sex to make the relationship more exciting.
I like both versions, I wish the 2005 version would have been a mini series as well.
Der Film vom 2005 war schrecklich !
love this version because you see a lot more of Darcys life what makes him tick how Wickham really brought so much trouble into his and his sisters lives you just could not bring that much of Darcys life in a 90 min flim even with the lovely Matthew playing him
There’s a reason this version is so good. You can’t tell the whole story in two hours.
You can see Darcy’s body language change when Lizzie says, “And to think that I might’ve prevented it.” He realizes he messed up, and could’ve prevented it by revealing Wickham’s character publicly.
The best version 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌😀😀😀😀
Absolutely!💕
👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿❤❤
I love what he did because of his love to Lizzie.
The Mr Collins letter about Lydia that follows is hilarious.
4:52 when he took her hand 😭
This hits different when your mothers name is Lydia
I Just love Jane Austen's novels.
The blooper in this scene is Jane writing that her 'nieces and nephews' take up her time. The children are her cousins as they are the children of her mother's brother. Jane is not their aunt she is their first cousin.
I'm not sure it's a blooper. I have a niece (26) whose first cousin has young children that she sees regularly. Even though those young children (1, 3, and 5) are actually her first cousins (once removed) because they are the children of her first cousin and not her sibling, those children still call her "Aunt" Sydney.
At the same time, in Sense & Sensibility, the Dashwood girls refer to Fanny, the wife of their half-brother, John, as "Aunt Fanny" because she is so much older than them when in fact she is their sister-in-law.
I've also noticed that the term "cousin" in certain Austen novels doesn't always mean a blood relation but is used almost as an endearment when referring to certain people. One example is in Sense & Sensibility how Edward Ferris is often referred to by Mrs. Dashwood and even John Dashwood as the Dashwood girls' "cousin" when in fact he is no blood relation at all to those girls, including Elena Dashwood who is in love with him. He is the brother of their sister-in-law, Fanny. How familial titles are used in Austen's books is very interesting and doesn't always refer to the literal connections we might assume today. The seemed more flexible back then.
Can't help but think if only Darcy had called earlier or the letters been delayed longer he and Lizzie might have avoided any doubts they had about their feelings for one another for the rest of the story.
True. But he had to prove his worth and integrity without knowing anything about Lizzie's feelings.
Had Darcy been delayed a little longer, he would not have caught Lizzy and found out about Wickham’s actions. They would have left without telling Mr Darcy and he subsequently wouldn’t have helped and Elizabeth would never have tried to resume contact thinking that such a scandal would dissuade Mr Darcy.
2:21 Mr Bennett: Kitty.....what do you know of this?
Kitty: Nothing, I.....well I can't see why you're looking at me like this....well from what she wrote in her last letter I thought everyone should have seen it coming.....I don't know what all the fuss is about...
This is the best P&P even if there is a mistake, did anyone notice
The difference between Jane and Lizzie is hilarious
"I'm grieved indeed. Grieved, shocked" at least try to sound like it lol
But 1995 version is the best. Absolutely true to the book
That's the way they spoke during that time period as they were very reserved with showing emotion. Darcy is also an introvert, and thus tends to hide his feelings better than most.
It totally makes sense if you know his personality and understand the situation. In fact it seems perfectly executed.
His subtle expression and quick turn after Lizzy mentions Wickham’s name say a lot, though.
Mr. Darcy: “ Let me show you how Mr. Wickham can be ‘worked on.’”
2:21 that eyebrow could do battle with the Rock.
4:37 GENERAL KENOBI
MR DARCY, YOU ARE A BOLD ONE

I never understood why Lydia had to be saved after she eloped. The damage was done. They should have cut her off and save what was left of their reputation. I know at least two families that did so in similar circumstances. This was in the late nineties and early 2000s. I guess Austen's world was too different from our time now. The people I knew never spoke of their estranged daughters again, and would never wish to see them in person ever. Much too shameful, has to be kept hidden from relatives, neighbours and family friends. Really very shameful.
Well, when you love your child, you try to help, save him/her. In that case, in the society Austen lived in, a lawful marriage would do to solve the problem. And cut relations would not save the honor of the others sisters, the book is clear about their fate. They would have even lower prospects of marriage if Lydia were seen by the society as lost.
"An unfortunate affair!" 😕

Kitty at 2:19 looks kinda hot
Shocking that our society was so backward like this only a couple of centuries ago...
It's sad to see how far society has strayed from God's design for pure moral living and now nothing is shocking for society.
Observing morals, dignity and manners is backward to you! The way Lydia disgraced herself and her family good name would be frowned upon even nowadays by those who hope to preserve a meassure of respectability. Promiscuity is not a virtue my dear nor is frigidity for that matter.
By backward I guess you mean more Godly; now we shag, screw anything of any sex and think it's 'love'. Self-discipline, accountability, authority, restraint aren't evil - they're essential.
@tatianacalin8697 seeing as lydia is only 15 Wickham would be the one in trouble in any civilised countries
Not as emotional as 2005's P&P in my humble opinion.
