A private investigator (often abbreviated to PI and informally called a private eye), a private detective, or inquiry agent, is a person who can be hired by individuals or groups to undertake investigatory law services.
Private investigators often work for attorneys in civil and criminal cases.
Well I don't want anyone associated with law enforcement or lawyers. I need someone dedicated to the average Joe.

This is my dream job and a personal goal.
It’s truly not that hard to get into. I was a correctional officer for too many years before I switched over to private investigation work.
Search on indeed for jobs under investigation or mobile surveillance it’ll pop up if you’re trying to get general experience that might look good for you in an interview apply at local law firms for process serving work. Do that for about a year that will show that you’re good at finding addresses conducting pre-tax work and that you have a good sense of ethics.
Another route to make your résumé look half decent would be may be to get into repo work or working for insurance companies as insurance investigator as you’re taking photos of accident scenes and conducting interviews..
But like I said best case if you don’t have any sort of law enforcement experience I suggest go in the process serving at first.

I myself graduated two different academies in the past.
Also did side work as a process server for the county.
That showed private investigation companies that I would be good at dealing with clients, lawyers, filing paperwork and locating addresses
If something was done to a loved one by a government agency....how do you find an investigator you can trust ??
The best way is to do it yourself - YOU are who you can trust the most

A detective works for a law enforcement agency. A private detective or private investigator are the same thing.
