I actually have the 1960 version of this game and it's always been one of my all-time favorite board games.💕😁

I have it too. This is still the original as you can get. Way better than the current Hasbro version. Mine is a later release from the mid to late 1960’s. The original 1960 version had the “Black Box” MB logo with the “100th Anniversary Game” banner since this game was created in 1860 by Milton Bradley himself as “The Checker Game of Life”.

Our family Friday night; cheese hamburgers, French fries, corn, ice cream and playing the game of Life! We didn't have this old model, no boxes to hold the money and no Art Linkletter!

Reuben Klamer the toy inventor of "The Game of Life" died on 9/14/21 He also created the phaser rifle used in the" Star Trek" TV series. It's amazing that a man who created one of the most popular games in US history ended up being it's biggest winner of all. He lived to be 99 years old. Obviously he knew a lot more about winning in the real game of life than anybody ever gave him credit for.

We had the version published in the early 1980’s which has the same gameplay but just some updated art work. I think the dollar values on the spaces are the same as well.
My sister has that version of the game right now so it is not in my collection. 😢

Yep! I can’t remember ever using the “share the wealth” cards even once as a kid.

@@tyronepowers76 The first major revamp was in 1977. The gameplay is still pretty much the same though with the Share The Wealth spaces, Lucky Spin Strip, and the Day of Reckoning. Straightaways were added to the board. Some new spaces were introduced like "TV Game Show Winner", the color scheme of the wheel was updated, the slots for the money was removed, and some dollar amounts were upped a bit. 1979 brought a revamp of the insurance/stock cards, a new photo on the cover, and 1981 (the version I have) brought another minor change to the box art, then in 1982, there was a major boost in the dollar values of most spaces, along with a new photo of a family playing on the cover. A 2009 "retro" edition is based off this version. 1985 had some very minor changes, but generally had the same rules as the 1982 edition. 1991 was the big switch into the "occupation/trade salary/Life Tile" era, and its never been the same ever since, with a couple minor revamps occurring in 2000 and 2002 (similar in change to the 1977 refresh). I find the classic era more enjoyable than the modern (1991-now) era, due to the extra strategy for the Share The Wealth, Lucky Day, and Day of Reckoning spaces. The only weakness is that you can't change your salary later on in the game, so if you managed to pass those five occupations and only land on that Bachelor's (1960-77)/University (1977-1991) degree space, you could be trying for the Millionaire Tycoon if you're not lucky. Some classic elements related to the Lucky Day "Spin To Win" and Revenge "Lawsuit", along with another layout revamp occurred in 2007, which also brought new spaces, including a STOP space for a career change. Looking at the latest (2021) version (RIP Mr. Klamer), it seems like another major reshift has just occurred, not unlike 1991's. And honestly, it looks dumbed down with all of the various descriptive spaces gone, even more "STOP" spaces, the option to decline marriage, and spaces that either say "CAREER", "HOUSE", "PAY DAY", "BABY", "PET", "INVEST", and a lot of blank orange spaces in between. I'd rank the versions as: 1. 1960 (The original, and the best)
      2. 1977-1985 (much more orderly looking, and still fun)
      3. 2007 (Provides some classic throwbacks while maintaining the updated 1991 version)
      4. 1991 (Everything changes, but its still enjoyable)
      5. 2000-2002 (Nearly as good as '91, but a few minor differences)
      6. 2021 (by far, what happened to this once great game?)

@@pannoni1491 thanks! I concur that classic era is more enjoyable give some of the strategy you can use as opposed to the “spin and pray” strategy.

Back in 1971 I invented my own game using the spinner as a scoring device to play NBA Basketball. I used 5 man lineups per team and each player got a spin, whichever number the spinner landed on, the players got that number of points per quarter. I would randomly use either a sixth man or choose one player for 1 extra spin per qtr to make it more interesting. It was pretty darned realistic with scores varying just like real NBA games.

Oh, and in the 70's and 80's versions, just like this one, you could go backwards... but penalties and rewards are void when doing so. Poor Farm was later called Bankrupt, but played under the same rules.

My sister had the 80's one. She don't have it anymore. I found the 70's one at a thrift shop for like $2. It's complete and the box is in ok condition. Notta bad game. I like the 3D ramps and buildings still since I was a kid playing the game with my sister and Mom. I never payed attention to the game while I was playing so u was always a loser at the game of Life hahahahahahahahaaaaaa 😄😄 😄 Funny. Never got married never had a good career or any money. Now I kick ass at the game of Life. How ironic I guess 😄😄 Great video dude. You did an excellent job of review for the game of Life 60's 😊👍

I purchased the reproduction of this 1960 version recently and I fell in love with the game all over again. SO much more depth and varying gameplay compared to modern iterations.
My only (very small) gripe is that I am having trouble getting the insurances and stock papers to stay tightly folded lol. Other than that, 10/10 game that everybody must play!

I positively HATE The Game of Life. If I could acquire the rights to this wretched game - and could afford it - I would buy them, just so I could forever stop such a pile of junk from wasting storage space in games retailers and collectors shelves.
Is it the absolute worst game ever to be published? No... that title will forever be shared between Mastermind and The Game of Nations, but TGOL would definitely be a very close runner-up.
The funny thing, they really put the effort into giving this rubbish a really fantastic spinner. I have good games with absolutely awful spinners, if they had one as good as this, they would benefit enormously.
I used to own a copy of this, not this version admittedly, but one from around the 70's or 80's, but the gods of gaming were kind to me, and it somehow - and genuinely - got lost. No tears were shed, and I won't be replacing it anytime soon!
On a positive note BGM, I bought a game yesterday, based entirely on the strength of one of your videos - 3M's High Bid. I haven't played it yet, but I know this one's gonna be really good.
So final thoughts on TGOL, great video, rubbish game.
