    Paul, pardon the delay. You'd jumper pins 2 & 3 together at the end of the null modem cable. This jumpers Tx (transmit) and Rx (receive) together. If you can see what you're typing in the terminal window, you have control of the com port and have the correct port number selected. (It however doesn't tell you if the cable is null modem or straight through or not. But if you can't communicate to the product, then check the cable pinout.)

    ask, what if i need rs232 to mini usb? what is needed to change from rs232 to mini usb? because most of those on the market are usb to rs232.

    • @JoHoMoCo
      @JoHoMoCo  3 роки тому

      The pc has usb, not mini usb. The rs232 is for the drive/controller side, not the pc.

      Is your pc connected to internet? It should install the driver. If not, go to the adapter’s website to get the driver or google search it and install the usb driver

    • @JoHoMoCo
      @JoHoMoCo  2 роки тому

      Then it should show up under device manager under ports

    Why the USB adapter is seeing as a "mouse"...?? It is FTDI original on Win 7 ultimate... Thanks!

    Does this troubleshoot any serial communication or just with a specific computer/decide?

      This is for checking the pc and com port, not so much our motion controllers

    I had prob which is the feedback is not the same. Example if puts "asdf" then the feedback will come out "asde". It is like near miss. I use rs232 cable solder with 9 pin female d sub connect to male d sub cable which has usb.

    • @JoHoMoCo
      @JoHoMoCo  2 роки тому

      How long is the cable? Is it shielded?
      If it’s longer than 10ft stretch it out so it’s not coiled up which can increase the impedance. Consider shortening it - rs232 isn’t reliable beyond 15ft. Make sure it’s not next to high power cables with a lot of noise/switching frequency. If you must cross it, cross at 90degrees but best if you re-route it so it’s not next to high power cables.
      It could also be ground loop; if on a laptop try unplugging the power supply and run on battery; I’ve seen issues where controller is on one circuit and pc is on different curvy it and because the grounds weren’t the same caused issues. If it’s not a laptop, try plugging pc into same circuit as controller.
      Though unlikely it could be bad solder on the cable. Try spare rs232cable. Off by just one character it’s probably not that but that’s be last thing to try.
      Let me know if that doesn’t fix it.

    Can we check this in hyperterminal?

    • @JoHoMoCo
      @JoHoMoCo  5 років тому +1

      Yes but Microsoft stopped including HyperTerminal after XP. For Win7 or Win10, there's several open source terminal type programs but there's so many menus & settings, they're not as easy. Our software configures the com port settings (baud, data bits, stop bits, flow control) automatically when you open the software; you just need to select the Com port#.

    You have not mentioned DTEs or DCEs. A DTE is a Data Terminal Equipment e.g. a PC or dumb terminal and a DCE - e.g. a modem or line driver etc - is a Data Communications Equipment. A DTE sends data on pin 2 and receives on pin 3. A DCE receives - yes receives - data on pin 2 and transmits data on pin 3. This means on a 25way connector a DCE will send data on pin 3 even though the designation of the pin is RxD. The reason for this is to do with the fact that a DCE is normally receiving data from a line system e.g. a telephone line and so the data that it sends out on the DCE interface is the data that it received from the line system. Many people make the mistake of thinking that you always need to cross transmit to receive but not when connecting a DTE to a DCE. So when connecting a DTE to a DCE you actually connect TxD on the DTE to TxD on the DCE and RxD on the DTE to RxD on the DCE.

      Thanks for adding that - manuals for other devices should be consulted.
      Some plc’s use straight-thru cales (2-2, 3-3, 5-5 on 9pin) from through cables such as old AB that have serial ports. Our drives though use crossover cables (2-3, 3-2, 5-5 on 9pin) and hence the video is explaining connecting to our equipment.

    what is the windows O.S are you using?

    • @JoHoMoCo
      @JoHoMoCo  8 років тому

      +MsJinkerson MotionPlanner is compatible with Windows7, 32 or 64bit, or also WinXP and also earlier versions of Window. Aries Support Tool also has a terminal emulator and I've run that on XP, Win7 32bit and 64bit.The key on Win7 is the FTDI usb-to-serial adapter. If it's not FTDI, I wouldn't waste any time til you get one. There's a lot of little details in the video for our different products. Enjoy!

    1:40 it looks like your diagram for the 9-pin com is incorrect, at least how we would view it (looking at the port at the back of the PC).

    • @JoHoMoCo
      @JoHoMoCo  7 років тому

      lyianx it is correct. Tx on pc is transmit and is connected to Rx receive on the product. Rx on pc is receive and connects to Tx transmit on product. Ground (or more accurately dc common) are connected.

    I'm having trouble understanding where to physically add the jumper wire.
    I have the cables unlimited usb to serial adaptor and a null modem cable.
    Where do I install the jumper without resoldering??

    • @christianbarrientos5454
      @christianbarrientos5454 8 років тому

      +Paul Barden For your statement guest you have a male connector which make difficult the task of jumping the terminal however you can find a connector one simple connector that connects male to female connector use it and then use a wire may be the one used for Ethernet then plug it into the two holes 2 and 3 of female connector the you are done.

      Not sure what product it is you're asking about. Anything with serial isn't going to be damaged if you miswire the rx/tx/gnd, it just won't talk. try it! good luck.
