I have been searching for hours for a solution to two problems: 1. Recording with two microphones at the same time and 2. importing .mp4 files to audacity and you gave answers to both in this video! Thank you!!

Just an over all comment on all your videos. I am not a computer person per say. So it drives me nuts when I go to a Tutorial video for OBS, etc... And they fly through the process. Your videos are extremely easy to follow, and you really seem to understand if the viewer is not well versed in the editing world, we need people like you out there that can make it easy to learn. Thanks, and your a 5 Star channel all day long. Keep these tutorials coming!!!

OH EM GEEEEEE!!! I've been so frustrated trying to record two different mics in garage band. I've bought and sold a couple of different mics and was considering scrapping the entire thing and buying all new xlr equipment and an external mixer. All of this made me question my sanity for even wanting to start a podcast in the first place. Then I stumbled upon your video and when I first watched it, I didn't understand any of it and was about to click off when I read the comments of how you helped solve everyone's recording dilemmas. I decided to give your solution a try and once I downloaded the software, I was able to follow along step by step and have successfully recorded multiple tracks with different mics. I think my next step is downloading audacity because now garage band is speeding up the music track when I tried to insert it at the beginning of the audio. Anyway - a very long way to say "THANK YOU!" You've got a great teaching style and even I was able to follow along.

Kevin, I'm a Mac user looking for a way to add better microphone input for hybrid ZOOM meetings. I want to use at least two Bluetooth microphones for the in-person group to record sounds in a larger conference room. I've seen tutorials for using two USB mics using the "Audio Midi Setup" included in MacOS 13.0 Utilities to create an aggregate device but I can't find information about doing this with Bluetooth mics to provide better room coverage for my hybrid meetings. I would be using the MacBook to host the ZOOM meeting. Any ideas?

I'm looking for a similar solution for a panel-conference session, 1 or more BT omni mic(s) for the panel and one BT handheld mic to pass around the audience. Different tracks are ok, but real-time, auto-leveling, echo/feedback filtering/removal, mixing would be better... plus Zoom or recording support.

This was very helpful thank you. Now, is it better to have the microphone itself be at a higher gain or lower gain and about how far away should I be from the microphone?

    • @KevinStratvert
      @KevinStratvert  День тому

It’s generally better to have the microphone set at a lower gain to avoid picking up background noise and distortion. A lower gain also allows you to avoid clipping when speaking loudly. You can compensate for the lower gain by speaking closer to the microphone, ensuring a clearer and more focused sound. Dynamic microphones (e.g., Shure SM7B): 2-6 inches from the mic is ideal, as they tend to have a lower sensitivity. Condenser microphones (e.g., Audio-Technica AT2020): 6-12 inches is a good range, as these mics are more sensitive and can pick up a lot of detail from further away.
A good rule is to keep the mic at a distance where your voice sounds clear without picking up too much room noise. You can also use a pop filter to avoid plosive sounds (like “p” and “b” sounds) if you're closer to the mic.

Thank you, this was so helpful! Do you know if there is a way to pick between which mic you hear while doing a live stream? I'm planning on recording two people with two USB mics on a live stream using OBS. Would I have to manually mute each mic when the other person isn't talking? (Wondering if there's any way to do this outside of getting a mixer)

There are USB splitters that have off/on switches on each port but I don't know how well they will work for audio, if at all, EG, Sabrent model HB-UM43 with 4-USB-A ports. As for mixers, good luck on finding an audio mixer with multiple USB inputs! They seem to all be XLR input mixers and are called a USB mixer because they have a USB output. Search for one and you'll see what I mean. I thought it would be simple to find a 4-channel USB mixer. Argh!

Hi Kevin, your video was exactly what I was looking for to test the recording quality of different mics. However even I have followed your instruction on a clean OBS environment, I don't get two separate tracks in Audacity 3.3. When I open the mp4 file via the menu or drop it into Audacity there's no prompt to select the audio tracks to import and theres always only one track and it seems that only the first mic is recorded. Any tip how to fix the problem would be appreciated.

    • @KevinStratvert
      @KevinStratvert  День тому

It depends on what you plan to record! Different microphones are suited for various purposes like vocals, podcasts, instruments, or video work. Here are some great microphone options depending on your needs:
      For Podcasts/Vocals:
Shure SM7B: A popular dynamic mic known for its rich sound, great for podcasts and vocals. It handles various voice types well and rejects background noise.
Audio-Technica AT2020: A more budget-friendly condenser mic, great for vocals, podcasts, and voice-overs. Its clarity and detail are excellent for home recording setups.
Rode NT1-A: A condenser mic that's known for its extremely low noise and high sensitivity, ideal for vocals and podcasts if you’re in a quiet environment.
      For Instruments:
Shure SM57: A versatile dynamic mic used for instruments like drums, guitars, and amps. It’s durable and reliable in many settings.
AKG P170: A great condenser microphone for recording instruments like acoustic guitars, pianos, or drum overheads.
      For Streaming/UA-cam:
Elgato Wave:3: A USB condenser mic, perfect for streamers and content creators, offering high-quality sound with easy plug-and-play functionality.
Blue Yeti: Another popular USB mic for creators. It's flexible, with multiple pickup patterns (e.g., cardioid, omnidirectional), making it good for various recording needs like UA-cam videos or streaming.
Choosing the right microphone depends on your recording space and intended use!

What do I do if OBS is favouring one mic over the other? I have them both plugged in and the audio mixer is registering both but when I record, only one mic will record audio and the other records no sound at all as if it's muted. I've followed the video step by step all the way to the end before it goes into the Audacity part and this is the only issue Ive come across. This also seems to be the issue no matter what method I try or what mics I use. Either one mic will record and the other won't or they each will record only to one speaker or the other instead of both. I'm on a iMac so maybe its the computers issue?

Thank you for another great video. I am currently recording a round table meeting with Zoom and a single microphone (Tonor conference USB mic). As the size of our attendance grows (currently about 15) that single table mic is not enough. Could I use OBS as a full audio/video manager and feed directly into Zoom. I am pleased with the Zoom recording abilities, so I would not need to record with OBS. Do you have a preferred USB mic that is budget friendly?
One other question, is it possible to rename the mic(s) so they always show up with my designated name, even after unplugging and plugging in at a later date? Sometimes I see so many choices, I am not sure which is correct.

Your player is likely only playing one of the audio tracks. When you bring into an app like Audacity, you should see all the tracks.

Hi! I use a Zoom H8 as usb audio interface. I have connected 2 XLR mics BUT when i have to choice the mic 1 and mic 2, i can select only the Zoom H8 usb audio interface. I have put the mics on 2 different tracks by the advanced audio option. This way i hear the audio of 2 microphones together in two different channels.
I would have one mic per channel.
    Any idea?
    :/

Make sure that you’re using multitrack mode on your Zoom H8. Multitrack mode will send up to 12 channels straight to your DAW for easier editing. Studio mode merges all the channels.

This is a very simple solution but it's weird to use a video recording software in order to get control over multiple microphones. Is there not a way to do this with audacity to control the individual microphones. I have a couple of focusrite USB audio inputs and I want to split the left and right channels into their own recording channel. Your solution using OBS totally works but it seems like more steps than it should be to get multiple mics to record multiple tracks in audacity. Thanks for the solution but I wish it was possible to do that straight into audacity.

I'm considering doing exactly what you described in this great video, but I never have enough USB ports on my laptop. Can I plug in 3 USB mics with a simple USB Hub, a powered USB Hub or should I move up to a docking station? What would your recommendation be? If I do use any of those options, does OBS see just 1 mic that is the combination or can I adjust each mic individually? Thank you.

Do they all have to be different mics? I'm having a bit of trouble

Hi Kevin, I found the issue. In the output advanced settings I only had ticked track 1. After I changed it to one and two I received the exact same result as you presented.

Hello, thank yo so much for your video, was a big help. When I played back the audio from OBS it sounded great, however, when I uploaded the file to Audacity, we sound like robots. What did I do wrong and do you know if I can fix it? Thank you
