The 1 pad per gallon doesn't apply. Ot doesn't apply for rock either. It sure is a great way to sell that stuff. This is a widely debated topic in the hobby and I will vote for no sand bed. Just a lot less problems stemming from maintenance. Additionally, all of these "pounds" of filter material we put in our tanks, reduces the amount of water we have in the tanks. So that sucks.
Depends on the sand itself. Black blasting sand is slag but a natural black sand is volcanic. Not sure what the black sand sold at Petco (for example) is though but I use that with my goldfish
I like your videos but I have to say the recommending to people not to vacuum sand is terrible advice for any new reefers or reefers starting a new tank. Suddenly disturbing sand in an old tank is a bad idea I agree, however maintaining a vacuumed sand bed will not affect bacteria populations but absolutely will remove excess detritus and DOC’s as well as prevent old tank syndrome. Vacuuming sand monthly is not a lot of work and has many benefits that far outweigh the negligible downsides. Unless you really love bristle worms.
Iv never vacuumed a sand bed in 15 years of reef keeping. This is how we did it back in the day and I think still holds true today. I know a lot of people do but its risky and I can't tell you how many times people crash established tanks by disturbing the sand. Just my 2 cents but imo leave it alone
@@fragboxcorals absolutely agree that disturbing and established sand bed is very risky. But there’s no denying that allowing the sand to become a sewer is also problematic. When I vac my sand the amount of shit that comes out is horrendous and it’s only 1” of Caribsea special grade. You obviously have successful reefs though, so something must be happening to alleviate excessive buildup.
Quick question (a little off topic)..... How did you attach the Monti to the overflow box in the Red Sea? Cyanoacrylate (Super Glue)? Is that OK to use with acrylic overflows? I want to attach some monti's to my overflow, but don't know what to use. Thanks.
I’m currently in the process of setting up my first reef tank it’s a 60 gallon cube. Your videos have taught me a lot I’m currently thinking of a torch coral garden to copy yours. I was also thinking of the sea Caribsea sea floor because I have controllable medium to high flow. how is this holding up 1 year later? Also very very interesting about not cleaning sand 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hey March, not sure if you guys found a name yet for your videos but how about "the reef report" ? On the topic of new video ideas, you mentioned "one of the older reef rules". Why not do a video about these old rules and what still apply and what doesn't. I'm sure alot of them still work but with the increase in technology and knowledge I'm sure things have changed.
Ha. I actually have two species but colors are very different and I can’t see the pipes so I was super hesitant to say. My green one has same polyp structure though. As the other commenter said below, is it pipe coral?
Looks like your hammers are placed at the same height as some SPS at the front of the main display. Can euphyllia take the same amount of par as SPS and do well?
I use special grade in my Mr. Aqua 12g long and I really like it. It’s large enough that it doesn’t form a sandstorm when the pumps are on, but it is small enough that it still looks nice, sand sifting critters can still use it, and it moves around enough so that the surface of the sand doesn’t get covered in coralline
I love knowledgeable people that give great proven advice. Love the video. What light is on that first tank , the bigger one? Im trying to get that crisp sunlight look without using a metal halide. Like sunlight.
Burt I am using a Kessil A360X and I get incredible crisp shimmer with it! I'm still cycling my Flex 32.5 with it but can't wait to see how the corals respond as I add them.

Xenia, just not the pulsing kind
Maybe clove polyps or anthelia? Hard to tell. Love the videos man keep em coming!
Anthelia?
I’ve read and heard Black sand is magnetic. You have to be careful if using a magnet scraper. It’ll “grab” pieces and you’ll scratch your glass.

@@ST62382 yeah the volcanic is the one. That’s the one that can contain magnetite.

It looks like pulsing Xenia but I know I’m wrong.

Please Show more stuff Like goby & Pistol Shrimp you have for Sale! I Love going through this small aquariums 😄

What about replacing or adding sand to an established tank. My sand is blowing around and it’s covering corals and exposing the bottom glass.

Do you ship to USA?? That coral is called a Pipe organ coral
Sand looks more natural, black sand looks nasty!

Fantastic marine tanks 👍
Love the intro!
I still have like 20 - 50 pound bags of southdown coral sand, for those that remember that stuff.
I used the special grade in my nano, it’s great when you kick up the flow and it doesn’t move!
