Right after the musical I bought a full musical Martin Guerre cassette and listened to this cassette for over 10 years, especially when I drove fast, sang along and literally learned all the words of this beautiful musical.
Met Matt Rawle after the opening of Evita revival, so happy I got to see him on stage. He was amazing. And such a lovely guy at the stage door. Asked my name before signing my programme. Not many people do that xxx
The start of the song reminds me of certain songs from Les Mis, especially "Do You Hear the People Sing?" I really love the music. It's a shame it's not done more often.
I think this was the best show Boublil/Schonberg ever did. I say that in past tense because they have continued to muck about with it & radically change it until it's not the same show. I saw the OLC after rewrites. Won Best Musical that year. What an amazing company of actors. There was a point where they were performing the original show by night, rehearsing the 'new' show by day & also preparing for OLC recording. That makes for a special kind of bonding that was palpable in the theatre.
oh man...this is sick..and now my new audition piece...WOW! i can see why it wouldnt do great since it was right after Les mis..with the whole french peasentry, but this music is just BEAUTIFUL thanks mac and boub!!!!!!!!!!
An absolute masterpiece from top to bottom. Original cast recording vastly outshines the 1999 UK Tour Cast. Blast the forces responsible for snuffing out this epic people's opera.
Terrific. I heard this show a number of years ago, and was very taken with it. Does anyone know if it is available of production (not professional, but regional theater)
Cameron Mackintosh is super creepy in the beginning of this clip. It’s almost like he’s “really” enjoying Matt’s performance. (btw… I wish they had kept this tempo)
I'm Martin Guerre is easily one of the best but most forgotten male anthems of musical theater. Having said that, I always felt Matt never had the technique to pull it off properly. You can hear him struggling here to perform the song. Lots of notes are cut off too early because he doesn't have the breath control, which makes his vibrato a bit wide for someone so young. Sometimes, his intonation is off, and there's lots of mouth singing that's not "in the mask". Even on the cast recording, he's not great. He's not terrible, but I can't believe in the entire West End (or even in New York) that they could not find a better young male lead singer/actor.
Matt Rawle singing is simply mind-blowing. It's simply amazing and he's so gorgeous too! :D

Это мой самый любимый мюзикл.

Have you heard him sing it since though? Much better, his technique’s improved and his voice has become more baritonal.
Matt is good...but he has a tendency to dump notes and sing a little flat. just my opinion....
Whose Martin Guerre in this cast? Is it Stephen Weller?
Matt Rawle
