  • This video is the second part of my analysis of 'Excerpt from "The Prelude"' by William Wordsworth, which is part of the WJEC Eduqas English Literature Poetry Anthology.
TO MAKE IT REALLY CLEAR, THIS PART OF THE POEM IS THE ICE SKATING SCENE
Different GCSE exam boards look at different parts of the poem.
In this video, I finish analysing the poem (focusing on its language, imagery, and structure), discuss and explain its "Three M's", think about the themes it could relate to, and also provide you with an optional revision task! Hopefully that should be enough to help you with your GCSE English Literature revision!
If you've found this video helpful, useful, or interesting, don't forget to drop it a like, subscribe to my channel, and turn on that notification bell, so that all future GCSE English Literature revision content ends up straight in your subscription feed!
You're welcome to use the comments section to ask me questions about the poem, add your own pieces of analysis, or to let me know which parts of the video you found the most useful!

Definitely a poem about death. Not only is there the metaphorical death of Wordsworth's youthful naivety and his innocence within nature, but the last line also strongly hints at the literal death of his mother and the spilt that caused within his family that lead him to contemplate suicide

Hmmm I like the interpretation and analysis no doubt but I personally think what you mentioned at the end on the theme of death needed deeper analysis: the poem is very similar to death of a naturalist. As in the death (not literal) of the child's childhood and the alien sound of melancholy symbolises the call of growing up and becoming an adult. With adulthood holding unforgiving icy crags and leafless trees. And the twilight symbolising the brief period of childhood and finally the dying "orange sky" is the end of the "twilight" and now the child is no longer a child. Thank you for the analysis and tips :))

'the hunted hare' uses assonance (i'm not sure if you could say assonance for 'h' but alliteration regardless) to connote how nature also contains hardships, augmented by how it follows the contrasting description of 'loud bellowing', indicating happiness. These hardships are further depicted in the phrase 'through the darkness and cold we flew' which implies how a part of nature is the potentially harsh conditions but the persona feels able to be undeterred by them from the preposition 'through' and the verb 'flew', highlighting that he is at this point used to the conditions that nature gives. This presents nature's role as a teacher, which is further significant from Wordsworth's lack of a parental figure which led him to nature.
This was initially just going to be about nature's role as a teacher from the part about the hare but then I started thinking and wrote a bit more.
Thanks for the great video as usual!

Really thorough analysis, with great use of embedded quotations and subject terms!
Your point about 'h' intrigued me, so I did some digging. 'Consonance' is probably most accurate, and alliteration is generally safest. Can definitely see why you were drawn to call it assonance (given that h is sometimes treated like a vowel, especially when not voiced), but given that the examples you chose definitely make the /huh/ sound, alliteration / consonance are more accurate here 😊

hi just my own interpretation the thing about “alien sound of melancholy” - i think your analysis has been taken wrong because if you read it fully it’s saying sadness is unknown to him because of his love for ice skating and winter and the change in tone could be because winter is finishing and it means he can’t ice skate anymore and he will be trapped in his grandparents house

Thank you so much for your analysis. Just studied this poem in school about 2 weeks ago and I didnt get it. But now - thanks to you - I fully understand the language and the poem and its context! But I just want to ask on advice on how to compile an essay from the poem. Any tips?

You're very welcome - happy to have been able to help you out.
With regards to how to write a poetry essay, some tips:
      - You'll want an overview, 3-5 analytical paragraphs, and if you have time, a mini-conclusion.
      - Overview: A tiny introductory paragraph that covers the meaning, mood, and motivation should be sufficient. Using an evaluative verb (if you don't know what that means, check out my video on verb choice) will help out here too.
      - 3-5 analytical paragraphs: Using whichever paragraph structure you're used to, write at least 3 (5 is better) analytical paragraphs, making sure that one covers language, one covers imagery, and one covers structure. Try to make sure you're covering the start, middle, and end of the poem as you do this too (e.g. don't just write 3 paragraphs about the first line). If you want to talk about the OVERALL structure of the poem (vs the effect of one rhyme, for instance), I would make that your last analytical paragraph, as it would allow you to 'zoom out'.
      - Mini-conclusion (not totally essential): wrap up your argument and key points so far, making sure that whatever you write directly answers the question. A personal comment can go here, but isn't essential.
      Hope that helps!!

If you had to compare this to death of a naturalist, what would the differences be? they both discuss similar ideologies of nature, however if you had to write about the differences what would you write about?
