Scientific papers show that bromeliads hold so much water they increase the humidity in tropical rainforests. I grow them in Melbourne and like your enthusiasm.
I live in South East Florida, in the USA,
Bromeliads grow year round in my subtropical garden; love them!
Yucca can also be planted outside in this weather and temperature
What a great idea, i'll try it in the Netherlands.
They are very hardy & adaptable. I live in Australia & have seen them as an understory plant in dappled shade. Beautiful when planted en mass & in flower. You get a lot of frogs sitting in the centre where the water is.
Sounds beautiful! I would love to spot a frog sitting in one of mine. There are tropical tree frogs frogs that lay individual tadpoles in bromeliads too. 🐸
You get rain. I have to give artificial rain, and shade. Arizona.
I grow Broms in cold Australia outside all year round. I find I need to strengthen them with seasol initially before the cold sets in. We get below -2 sometimes in winter
Very interesting! Can't waint to try once i have my own garden haha. Regarding the interaction between bromeliads and "their" trees, i think commensalistic is a more fitting description since symbiotic would entail some benefit for the tree as well.
Very good point! Thanks for sharing :D
Probably increases humidity in the vicinity of the tree.
Wow, this was an excellent update on your bromeliad culture ; well done! Next spring, I want to start growing these outside like you're doing. Unfortunately, bromeliads in N.W. Illinois are expensive with fewer varieties available, but I want to give it a try. Hopefully, I'll get offshoots.
Thanks! Yes I think they really add to an exotic garden 👍
Great video. With lots of info. Would they do OK overwinter in an unheated greenhouse in Wales?
Great video again, do you water these overwinter in your greenhouse?
I'm on the same Tropical journey and like the look of Bromeliads , so they can't survive on a raise bed in U.k ? Do Bromeliads stay small when place in branches as they have a tiny rootball ?
Do you think my bromeliads would like to be in the sun in 95 degree weather, Zone 8 a, USA? Since 3 years I have them in dappled shade, morning sun. Winter in a greenhouse.
Only if they were regularly watered. I think dappled shade is best for your garden ☀️
@@GrowParadise thank you!
I’ve been meaning to try this here in panhandle of Northwest Florida I’m thinking in 9A I could mount them and then cover with frost cloth and bubble wrap if we got temps below 5 C. Do think it’s worth a try to see if it would work
It’s definitely worth a try, the air temperature should be warmer higher up so they should avoid any frosts 🤞 Let me know how you get on 😀
Bring them indoors as I do. They exude oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, but only at night.
At what temperature would you move them inside?
Usually around 5°C or if there is excessive wet weather.
Ok thank you. I am in Australia and we get some frosts for about 4 months of the year, but then still have 15 degrees and sunshine during the day. In summer it gets up to 40 and I am trying to grow a tropical garden…big challenge 🤣
