    This is a good strategy, but at 3:20 a more effective strategy is to launch a RT-2PM2 Topol-M cold-launched, three-stage, solid-propellant, silo-based intercontinental ballistic missile to attack blacks remaining pieces.

    If you're a fan of this gambit, a great alternative way to start this gambit is to perform Nf3 as the opening move. This invites the move d5 from black, which enables you to play e4, thus setting up the gambit. The nice aspect about the 1. Nf3 d5 2. e4 opening is that it doesn't require your opponent to play the Scandinavian.

      This is how I play the Tennison (as a transposition from the Reti). I love it, blacks moves are basically forced, I get a rapid king side development while black develops in a meaningless way.

      Only if he's foolish enough to try hold on to the pawn. e5 in response to Ng5 (giving back the pawn on e4) defuses all the tricks and gives the initiative to black.

    This is my favorite starting position. Against anyone who are low ranked or just OK in chess, this 9/10 wreck them pretty much at the beginning. Against mediocre ranked players it is still viable and gives you momentum even if they don't fall in any traps. And against high ranked (only played against 2 there) it is still a OK position imo. Most players tend to start with slav defence or king pawn, and this drag them over to a rarely played opening. I mean who plays Scandinavian defence if they don't see a free pawn for it.
    Edit: I always start with the Knight, Nf3 not the E pawn because it mostly make people play d5 to grab the control of the center.

    I found a book on the Tennison Gambit last year and loved the ideas as an alternative to the 1.Nf3= Reti, English, and K.I.A. systems I'd been using for years, with mixed results. The Tennison Gambit actually is somewhat unsound and will only work if you're playing against someone who knows no opening theory in the Center Counter.
    After 1.Nf3,d5 2.e4,de 3.Nfg5,Nf6 4.d3(?), ed 5.Bd3, there is no reason to play 5..h6(??). Black is up a pawn and just needs to develop normally.
    The line: 1.e4, d5 2.Nf3,de 3.Ng5,f5(?!) 4.Bc4,Nh6 5.d3(!),ed 6.cd(!),e5 7.Qb3,Qe7 8.Nc3,c6 9.0-0... Why not 9...Qb4 (!)? If white trades queens all of the threats are gone and black is two moves behind in development, but so what! If the white queen retreats, that's even worse, since it wastes a tempi. Remember, this is a gambit. The onus is on white to prove his initiative is worth the pawn.
    If black plays 3..Qd5 (which I found is actually played the most often) there are, at least 5 ways for white to win!
    Then there is 1.Nf3,d5 2. e4,de 3.Ng5,e5(!), 4.Ne4,f5 5.Ng3,Bc5(!); where black returns the pawn and chases the knight. White has a tough time developing, and will either lose a piece, a pawn, or more time. I have only won with white in this line once because I was playing a chump. We can't depend on opponents being chumps!
    THINK ABOUT IT...How can a gambit that's been around for over a hundred years be played by virtually no one? Because it's busted!
    Oh...and by the way...I gave away the book!

    1-e4 d5, 2-Nf3 dxe4, 3-Ng5 Nf6, 4-d3 h6... Black does h6 instead of 4-... exd3. Now 5-Nxe4 Nxe4, 6-dxe4 Qxd1+ and black has a comfortable game. Any 1100 will automatically do h6. d3 is not the answer, instead 4-Bc4 e6 followed by 5-Nc3. Now we're talking!

    Defence for black: From my experience the play up to 2.30 would be correct for black (if smart) to anticipate an incoming potential fork. The move however from 2.30 would not be black pawn to H6. There is no need to do this as the only immediate threat is to your pawns and not the horse. The correct play from black to move pawn to E5. The white player, would be somewhat surprised if simply following your instructions and realise, that your move still works in part. Knight to F7, forking castle and queen, king naturally takes to save a piece. Bishop to G6 checks king, discover queen. King or pawn takes bishop, in my experience it would be the king. White looks really good, Queen to Queen, with potential to do some damage. Now, Black from this point unleashes the trap, Bishop to B4 check on white king. If you cover the king with your bishop sitting in C3, then black rook takes queen or, if queen falls back bishop takes queen, checks then gets taken itself. The result is, white has lost a knight, bishop and a queen, while black has only lost a bishop and a queen. Black next move would also be to bring out its untouched knight to C6, attack bishop. Black has the advantage and better position from this open. - This is good for beginners, as long as they are playing a beginner, otherwise black, if smart will take advantage of the beginner and white throws away the advantage of being white in the first place.

      I play 1...d5 vs. 1.e4 100% of the time.
      I know what you mean though: 1...d5 is maybe the fifth most common response to 1.e4 (after 1.e5, 1.c5, 1.e6, and 1.c6).
      But it's worth noting that several top players have played the Scandinavian (aka the Center Counter), including Bent Larsen, David Bronstein, Viswanathan Anand, and the current World Champion Magnus Carlsen.
      I have encountered the Tennison Gambit many times in blitz games, and it is a tough opening to deal with. This video is helpful, though it would also be nice to see some Black refutations.

      Saint Dufus i know this is two year old post, but black has many good retribution to this after 3. Ng5. And that is to ignore the pawn. Just develop instead and you have taken the Initiative from the white very early. My favorite third move from black is 3.e5. Or 3. Nc6.

    Ah yes, the memories of launching Intercontinental Ballistic Missile whenever my enemy falls on my trap. Even if I have no more spare ICBM, I always love to sneak up my WWII M4 Sherman loaded with 75 mm M3 round behind my enemy's back. He can say no more man.

    Meh teaching 'tricks' to juniors is entirely the wrong way to go. Anyone with basic understanding of chess equilibrium would know that something was bound to go wrong even without analysis.

    • @mistletoe88
      @mistletoe88 10 років тому +2

      Garrett you learn tactics through instructional games. a lot of the main opening lines are highly tactical as well but compared to such tricks they don't leave you with an inferior position if the opposition knows the correct response. In other words, tricks detract from sound play. As he rightly points out, this should only be used in blitz games when players don't have much time to think and you can catch them with your preparation.

      rusty_frame Totally disagree, ultimately chess is about winning. "Seeing" effective ways to win is inspiring, motivating and teaches a young mind the beauty and devious nature required to do well. I wish when I was younger I had youtube videos like this to learn from, instead I used books with very similar gambits detailed but it just couldnt compete with narrated guides like this. Good work GJ, keep it up.

    • @Krownyh
      @Krownyh 10 років тому

      deloford I'm fond to believe the books were not totally detailed for the sake of making you think about the move

    • @mistletoe88
      @mistletoe88 10 років тому

      deloford same thing can be said about instructional games suck ss fischer-byrne, except those games don't lead you down the wrong path with flawed tactics. Books in the past obviously couldn't compete for on simple reason - computer analysis. do you seriously think that people nowadays could come up with completely sound annotated games in one day without first checking with a computer?

    What should my reply be in this scenario??
    1. e4 d5
    2. Nf3 dxe4
    3. Ng5 Bf5
    4 Nc3 Nf6
    5. Qe2 Nc6
    White to move. if i hit the pawn on e4 with either of my knights, black will play Nd4 threatening queen as well as Nxc2. (black could also quickly play a knight into e4 followed by my knight into e4 and then again threaten Nd4)
    Thank you

    • @perkalov
      @perkalov 9 років тому

      Nf3 looks natural. You will still be as much ahead in development since h6 is a "non developing" move.

    • @user-nf8lb6mc2c
      @user-nf8lb6mc2c 9 років тому +2

      it is white to move if not he will lose the e4 pawn due to the pin of Qh5 Nc3 Ke1

    • @perkalov
      @perkalov 9 років тому

      No, last move is dxe4, black is to move.
      Might be that something else then dxe4 is preferable... Bd2 maybe, followed by exd3 Bxd3.
      White has developed all his light and opened up for castling.
      Anyway, Tennison is an unsound gambit by all accounts.

    • @user-nf8lb6mc2c

    At 5:24 as black I would play the knight to c6 to defend from the bishop which leads to a situation where white can take the rook but still foes not have the early checkmate.
    Just a suggestion

    At 8:05 can you play Bd4. If the oponent takes the bishop white can play Bb5+ ensuring a capture of the black queen on d4. That's only if the opponent doesn't think...

    The problem occurs because nobody captures d3 pawn. Instead they bring their bishop to f5 position to defend the black pawn. Thus making black the more dominant in the match.

    The video is very good! And it was very important that you mentioned to use these kinds of tricks only on weak players. A slightly better player will destroy all your white ideas very easy. That must be clear! It starts on the second move when Black refuses to get the e4-pawn and play c6 instead.

    at 8.05 you should have played maybe B e d4, if qxBd4 you play B d b5+ and whatever he play you took the queen whith Q x qd4 at 9.07 queen black had the b5 square which authorize Nc4 to d6 check and gaining the queen
