- D.I.Y Japanese Mirror Tin Foil Ball Challenge! (AKA the best thing to do during lockdown to waste a bunch of time)
Yes I know I'm late to this challenge... around 3 years late. But better late than never right?
But I was sitting around bored out of my mind because where I live is currently in a lockdown then I remembered this challenge!
When the challenge was relevant and everyone was making videos about it, this was actually something that I really wanted to try but never got around to it... until today!

i think there are two reasons the actual Japanese can hammer their balls into shiny masterpieces. 1. their tools, and surfaces, are cleaned and disinfected to the highest of Japanese standards. 2. slick editing.

I used to make these at school using the foil from my lunch, before I was even aware that others did this in Japan. I didn't have a hammer, so I'd use my foot to squash it into shape, then rub it on a smooth surface to polish it a bit.

The weird shape of it actually reminds me of that big public art piece sculpture in Chicago called "Cloud Gate" aka. "The Bean" that's featured in a lot of movies 😄👌🏼

i tried it with chocolate aluminum
it became shiny and i used wood instead of sandpaper and a spoon instead of a hammer@@SnailyTheSnail

Big part of planishing a metal surface to a gloss is to first polish the tool surface of the hammer to a mirror finish. Each strike of the hammer will leave an imprint of the tool surface.

I made one of these about 40 years ago from the foil liners in cigarette packages. You remove the paper backing and layer it piece by piece and spin it in a round ashtray til it shines. It took years to weigh over a pound. Then someone stole it.
I feel like the "oh no we have to go to the shop" part was just so you could waste time with B roll shots to meet that 10 minute mark 😂

Looks like a 3d Reuleaux triangle which has been smoothed. If it is one you can put in between two flat boards and the top one would roll smoothly.

The best tin foil was the foil in cigarette packs. We used to save all ours and make these tin foil balls. Been doing it for over 30 years, until I quit smoking
