Haohan Firefly VTOL - Maiden flight and transition to fixed wing.

- This is the first full flight of the Haohan VTOL, I've not made this a review flight as I was dodging rain showers and I only had a 10 minute window free to test it. First impressions though are that it's a very nicely setup plane from the factory and offers much better flight performance and landing ease than the fixed wing version.
When I have a calm day I will go for a longer flight and give a full narrated overview and review.
If you can't wait until then, the Firefly VTOL is available here - www.kickstarte...
Allways enjoy watching you videos your sat count seemed quite low but gradually got higher. The head tracking looked usefull for landing 👌
@simonwood8685 yes, sat locks are lower than I'd like, I think this is a combination of the Moonlight VTX antennas being fairly close to the GPS and also the very heavy cloud cover.
Just fantastic, a master, no comparison.
very nice good flying
Nice flying. im one of the backers. I hope it ships soon. How is the vtol tuning from haohan? Can it cruise at 3ish amps like the original?
I've not had a chance to calibrate the current sensor yet and measure an accurate cruise current draw. I would expect it to draw closer to 5-6amps being a twin. With the additional drag of the VTOL parts. It carries a 9,000mah pack though, so there's plenty of flight time available.
@Crunklefloop the center cone, is supposed to be for an airspeed sensor. where the original motor was located. Is it behind the prop line?
@@squirrelynutz1 That's a very good observation, and yes it does sit behind the prop line (although not in direct airflow). It's roughly 50mm from the outer part of the prop line (if you were to draw a line from the prop tip running backwards) and 95mm from the prop itself.
I'm not using an airspeed meter though. I don't tend to these days.
@Crunklefloop is the tune done correctly? Did they correctly apply the notch filters? Smooth hover?
Looked very stable in the hover...Whats going on with the colour balance..?... 🤔😳😏🇬🇧
@EnglishTurbines I think the moonlight was struggling with being in the darker section of the canopy and then panning to a lighter region.
Next time, I'll lock the settings.
Nicely done. I wonder if the VTOL parameters could be copied to a DYI Vtol mode.
But these Amps, oh man. This is power hungry.
@@DJI_Silesia I'm not sure how accurate that amp draw is. I've not done any calibration on it yet.
I was also looking at the amps :) seems like very windy condition
@@Sebas-lk3jv It was quite windy, my 2nd flight in calmer conditions saw around 6amps cruise.
Where did you buy it from?
I was sent this directly by Haohan for testing and review. I will do an Unboxing and build overview shortly (I meant to get it done this week however had no spare time). You can also checkout Bonafide Pirate's review here - ua-cam.com/video/dmBW7LAVZBs/v-deo.html
I really like this plane, but kickstarter is too sketchy for me.
I'm not a massive fan of Kickstarter myself however that seems to be the way a lot of companies are doing product releases now. With the fist version of the Firefly it soon appeared on Banggood and Aliexpress after Kickstarter so that might be an option for you soon.
No reviews until the Kickstarter was over made no sense why they didn't ship these out to reviewers earlier.
Yes, sadly the timing was a bit tight, I received it about a week before the Kickstarter ended however I still had to assemble some parts and wait for a break in the weather to fly (winter in the south of England is windy and wet!) which took things past the Kickstarter date. 😞
@Crunklefloop Absolutely they could have done a better job, most folks were looking for some type of review because the product videos put out by haohan weren't good. Hoping to can still do an unboxing kinda to show us all the components / connections, radio etc.
@@emperorkalel I can try and sort an unboxing/overview video tomorrow.
@Crunklefloop Thank you - question: would you be able to show how to program using non haohan radio?
👍
How difficult was it to set up?
@tokyovigilante100 very easy. I'm using the settings that came pre-progammed on the supplied FC. Other than adding my RC receiver and changing some arming settings (I prefer switch arm rather than rudder). It was pretty much pre set as you see it from the factory.
@@Crunklefloop Thats really interesting to know
Nearly 10m loss of height on transition to forward flight, I find Ardupilot so cryptic in it's management, especially the QHover stuff. Does it have a minimum height allowable for flight transition?
@Caroline_Tyler I've not done a deep dive into the transition settings yet, I think it could be made to transition with less of a drop, though, with some tweaks. There's no airspeed sensor on this one either which may have an effect.
It looks like it lost altitude much after the transition. It barely lost 2m during the transition.
@@Crunklefloopairspeed sensor wouldn't help much in terms of the VTOL transition though right? You'd more so want to use an air pressure calculation to accurately reduce that drop on transition. I think gps is a step less accurate for the vertical positioning(height)
@@FreeEditsForYou The loss of height is actually after the transition when it's moved into FBWA (in the transition phase it barely loses any height). I was also finding that in FBWA it was losing altitude so I have shifted the C.G slight more rearward (it was on the nose heavy side) and run Autotune. It's a lot better now.
@@Crunklefloop AYEE thats awesome. Autotune is pretty solid on Inav. Did you run auto tune forever? or just for a few flights to tune and save?
