I prefer the new version because the original was misleading. They mentioned 'punching the ball forward' when actually you can handpass in any direction, they mentioned 'four quarters of 20 minutes with time added on for stoppages which could be as much as an extra ten minutes' when actually it could be an extra ten minutes for each quarter making a possible 120 minute game. They showed players taking speccies and then said 'that was called a mark' so newbies thought a mark was a speccy. It probably had other confusing elements but without re-watching the video I can't recall what they were. The new video is not perfect but it is an improvement on the old one.
How to figure out the score lol when I was young and first found the game, it was all algebra for me, letters, numbers, etc. Now they sorted that pretty well. Also the idea that the players play every where, despite their positions. Overall a its at least 10x better, still a couple things they could do better.
It also left a lot of people confused when showing how the game is scored. 'A final score might look like this'... without explaining Goals & Behinds. Newer version is much clearer.

Agree Rob. The original spelt out the game shown relative field sizes and rules. Not just hype. My great uncle was captain of The South Melbourne Swans (beside Ablert Park Lake).

this version also explains the scoring - the initial version just put up scores without explaining them (goals, behinds, total) which would've left 100% of international viewers confused. I'm glad they addressed that in this revision. I think Rob made good points though about how there shouldve been more exciting clips during the first minute to help draw the viewer in
I agree about the excitement of the video and that they should have included the playing field comparisons. They have explained some things better in this video though like the turnovers and the scoring, but it could still be a lot better.
I like this one better because it explains the rules more rather than just concentrating on the spectacular parts of the game. This helps people understand the game more. Showing all the spectacular stuff might make them want to watch it more but they have no idea what they’re watching.
Liked your reaction but it seemed like you already had an opinion within seconds of starting on which one was better. Not a surprise, people generally like the original one better no matter how the updated version is, in most things. Good onya for your continued love of the game. Keep it up mate 👍
I much prefer this new version because it does a much better job of explaining the rules. The original was actually misleading, although I agree that they should have included the graphics showing the difference in pitch sizes.
Yeah I actually prefer the old one I think it explains things a bit better and like you said shoes the spectacular aspects of the game and size comparison to other sporting fields. I don't think they needed the humour in it just explain the rules. I will say one thing they explained better in the new one is how the scoring works. The old one they just said a final score looks like this but this one explains the first number is the goals scored worth 6 points the second is behinds worth 1 point and the 3rd is the total score.
I like the older one better (and maybe that has a little to do with the fact that my Hawks were dominant at that time). But, one thing this did much better was explain the SCORING properly (a pretty important factor). Go and have a look at some reactions to the old one, you'll see almost nothing but confusion and thoroughly blank looks when they semi-explain the scoring system in that one. This one clears it right up.
I think Rob’s critique is very interesting and fair. I also think that the comments also are good and add to the discussion. Just one point: you don’t play AFL. AFL is a league. You play Australian Rules Football otherwise know as footy.
love both your reactions and i think a lot of us aussies who play hear you. i think what you said about the start of the vid is fair but the reason they dont show the size of the field is because every field different. its a well known fact in aus that some fields are short and wide, long and thin or combination of both. other than that loved you reaction and hope, as a young footballer, can make the game more exciting for you
I prefer the older version. This lacks excitement. I liked in the previous one how they showed height comparisons of players and the overlay of ground size. I do however like how they have included the AFLW & showed some of the skills and ferocity with which they play. They could have mentioned that they also have 18 Teams. Overall I just think it lacked excitement. Go Dees ❤️💙
Both versions are only introduction. Unless someone actually follows up and watches a few matches, they will never truly have any idea of what the sport is from a few minutes highlights on a video. As you mentioned yourself, the ground is so much bigger than most other ball sports that camera footage views can only show so much to have a real context of what a person can see at the ground itself. A person could watch 100 hours of highlights and still have less idea than a person that attended an actual match in person for two hours. You are one of the handful on youtube newbies I seen to Aussie footy that actually truly gets the sport. You might not understand all the nuances and history but you actually get the sport like any new person in Australia would get it that saw it in person. Kudos to you for being fair dinkum in your interest in the sport and not just another youtuber full of hype than actually learns nothing of substance. I should add the only other youtubers I seen that get the sport are two young Americans that went from watching matches at all hours of their weekend to actually playing for a club there.
Take all your points Rob but as far as personal view of the two I come down for the new one because it includes AFLW and has Aussie accent , not Yank (for which it was obviously targeted at). But don’t mind which people go for, as long as they work 🏉
I think both versions have their shortcomings. In the first one the explanations of the rules weren’t always clear, extra time was confusing, so was scoring and using yards instead of metres made it clear it was aimed at a US audience. This one has left out some of the interesting parts of the first one like the field size comparison and the height range of the players and it should have included the phrase “it’s not rugby” at the beginning because that’s always remarked on by reactors. On a positive note the new one includes the AFLW, it’s clear about extra time, explains the scoring system properly, uses the more universal measurement metres and is more concise and less confusing about the finals. Maybe everyone should watch both to get the full picture.
The original was made by Australians as well (it's an official AFL production), it just had an American voice-over to appeal to it's target market - people who don't know about the sport.
I prefer the original, I'm glad they added WAFL (let's face it they do waffle about pay), I think this is more aimed at those who don't want a more hyped up exciting game... I.e. my son is not one for loud noise, but loves the AFL. For the world we live in today - I think they have done a great job in calming people down and "relax and enjoy" the game rather than hype them up. (Think about what is happening around the world).
AFLW… 😝 Bloody Western Australia ruining the obvious acronym for the ladies. The worst is when people feel compelled to say “AFL Women’s” out loud. Like I get that the acronym is AFLW, (because WAFL was taken) but just because that’s the acronym doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to say the more natural “Women’s AFL”
Rob I think you need to re-watch both of these videos (I did). In the original video, the first sighting of a specky is 2.26 into the video, whereas the new version shows 2 speckies in the first 20 seconds. I agree with you regarding comparing the field (pitch) sizes, also the original showed the difference in players height, to point out that the smaller guys have a chance to make it to the top level also. I prefer the new version
So just rewatched both. The kick at the start of both, original is bigger and better than Buddies that just about makes it. The original has a huge hit earlier on as well. The new one has a speccy quicker but transitions far too quick for you to properly notice :)
As of 2022, all AFL Clubs had women's teams. I think if they merged the very first introduction to AFL with this update you would have the understanding and the excitement all rolled as one. Now that would be a brilliant introduction to AFL.
I agree with your criticisms of the new version, but I think it explains some aspects better, things that caused confusion when UA-camrs did reaction videos, including specifying that you bounce the ball every 15 m (previously they said every 16 yards, which caused people to ask "Why 16?") and they explain the scoring much better (previous version didn't have "goals", "behinds", "total" headers). Also saying that the Grand Final attendance is 100,000 makes much more sense than saying "90,000+".
The original might have been more exciting , I would agree . But the scoring is better explained and it did include the women . They didnt try and confuse people with the finals knock out system because not many people could get it . Its short , I think they could have made it a bit longer by adding more general play and possibly explain the throw ins and some of the free kicks better. I suppose its an evolving thing.
This video is way better then the original. Also I disagree with the first few clips, because for a new viewer they are super exciting because well they are, and as the video goes on it gets more and more exciting 🎉
The AFL has said they will only entertain the inception of a Tazzie team if they can build their own top notch stadium, and I'm not sure Tazzie can afford one by themselves.
I saw Sydney play Carlton in a practice match last Friday, The Sydney players looked cherry ripe for the beginning of the season. They played like a well-oiled machine (I'm a Carlton supporter), and I think Sydney will be right in the mix for the grand final again.
In most sporting commentaries one doesn't normally start at the beginning with the most spectacular clips but sort of up the ante as the video goes on. Also from watching mainly US reviewers of AFL video clips and highlights if they are new to the game they are almost aghast at the views of an opposing player using another player's back to leap up higher into the air to catch a speccy. If this was at the start of the video it might have disturbed some of the US viewers, used to NFL rules, so much that they wouldn't watch any more of the video clip.
I prefer the intensity of the old. But the new one seems to leave people far less confused when they’re reacting to it lol So they explained the rules and the nuances a bit better. I do like the humour of the new one though lol
Needs to be added, no two AFL 'pitches' are the same dimensions, some are wider and more circular, like the MCG, or longer and narrower like Optus staduim, The SCG is the shortest, not much space between the centre square and the 50m line at its apex. Fun fact, West Coast built two training ovals at Lathlain Park, The Perth Demons WAFL home ground, one the same as Optus and the other the same as the MCG and built a museum there so fans can finally get to see all our history in person, including all 4 premiership cups.
I think they've done a good job, the production itself is much more polished and they explain the important points in a much better way. This will go viral for the next two weeks prior to Round 1. Has too much Sydney though, needs more Port Adelaide ;)
This clip is far better. More directions (arrows) and importantly how the score is worked out. 95% of viewers haven't a clue of what 20 10 130 is. I don't think it matters much re the speccys at the start as most will watch the whole clip anyway. Agreed re the ground size of sport comparison. This is very much an Aussie version for a world audience while the original one was done for an American viewer mainly (16 yards not 15 metres). A few points missed like the boundary throw in but these are minor compared to the basics which most newbies need at the start in understanding the sport.
If you would like to know more about Australia, you might be able to find on UA-cam Australia, The Story of Us, there are 8 episodes to watch all on Aussie stories and history. Hope you find this series helpful, and would very much appreciate to see your reaction videos of it.
Rob, you need to have a look at Australian netball. The Suncorp Super netball - better than England 😉 Your best players come here in their prime to compete with the best and become the best - England's Helen Housby is one of my favourite players. In fact, my favourite player - Shamera Sterling - is from Jamaica. They go back home to retire 😜
Top level netball is truly amazing to watch. Fast skilful, competitive. Much better than basket ball which just looks like throwing goals from one end to the next
@@elisahelen I couldn't agree more. And watching the international games is the same as watching the local national competition because half of the national teams are made of some of the best imports in the national comp. I'm gonna boast a bit - Australia trained the best players in the Jamaican team and they placed silver in the commonwealth games. Just seeing Shamera Sterling's innocent excitement coming second was priceless. She is a beautiful soul and watching her play has made me a better goal keeper.
@@RobReacts1 There's always time for netball. Why don't you get your wife to do a video about netball together? On a side note, we won our semi-final of indoor netball tonight. I played between each of my posts.
They still don’t explain the bounce properly, they make it sound like you have to bounce every 15 metres as opposed to 15 metres before you have to bounce
This video was created before the Franklin 1000th goal and they have released a AFLW version of this so that’s why they have briefly talked about the women’s league, I agree with they should put the good stuff in the first 30secs because that’s where the people will make there decisions on whether they continue to keep watching or not. But I am glad they got rid of the American overlay (I get the old version was made for America) and made the new one more fun with some humour.
7:09 it kind of surprises me to hear you say that you found it quite easy to pick up the rules of AFL. In australia most of the ‘uninitiated’ that you speak to are rugby fans that just point blank refuse to even try and engage with AFL. They act like it’s so stupid and arcane that I guess I kind of began to believe that. Though I must say, as someone who plays footy, I genuinely feel that in many ways, AFL imposes relatively few ‘arbitrary’ rules. It feels quite natural to play because there’s no rule saying you can’t tap or pass forward, there’s no rule saying you can’t go past a certain invisible line etc. It plays very naturally. Admittedly the handball and the requirement of bouncing do stand out as slight arbitrary restrictions, but other than that, it’s very fluid and natural feeling to play. I often feel like it’s one of the more pure interpretations of “we like kicking a ball around, how do we make this a formal game,” without descending into “so there’s zones of control, and this line and that line, and you only get to possess the ball this many times before you’re forced to hand it over… etc” That’s not to knock sports that have those restrictions, but they create a different vibe for me
Rob, IMO it’s not which one is better. It’s would it still have got you to watch a game, is probably a more important question. Like if you had not seen the original video, would it have peaked enough interest for you???
Its instructive and the slow mo is useful, actually enough "female" content! A little too much slang! 🤔 I cringed every time the woman's voice came in, it could be too condescending! 🧐 Go Tassie, they have always supported AFL, and provided some great players to Vic, it's past time they had a real team! 😠 Good job Rob! 😁👍
With all due respect Rob, i don't how you can possibly say the original was better when it had simple errors in it which would've made it very confusing. Particularly the spectacular catch being called a mark made it sound like a mark had do be a speccy to be called a mark - so other regular marks are not marks?!? Also, the holding-the-ball rule and the totalling of scores are much better explained in this recent one.
Couldn't agree more. I think they were so focused on female inclusion that they missed some opportunities to highlight the spectacular. Check out the "Are the St Kilda Football Club the unluckiest AFL club?". Go Saints!
I think the original was far superior and only needed two minor additions. They needed to explain the scoring and scoreline more thoroughly. And they needed to add the 'ba bow' sound-effect when he 'hits the post'. Also, like it or not the slightly American Accent is more understandable to a wider world audience. I find this new version to be a little condescending. I think it tries to be too many things to too many people.
The original was better. I think with this one it was "Ozzied "up a bit too much with the slang and the likes. The only thing this one did better was explain the score line. They didn't even explain the rules for tackling like the original did. You are trying to get international interest in the game. First they need so see action, like tower climbing speccy's and massive bone breaking hits. You have to get them in the first 20 seconds saying OMG this is insane. Then you have to explain how the game works on a level they will understand (like the pitch size), not filled with Ozzieness and things that leave them scratching their head. Otherwise they think it's too complicated, and will be put off, when it's really not. They obviously didn't watch reaction vids to the original to see how people were reacting. what they liked and what confused them.
Been watching footy for 50 years and love it. But this is such a lame attempt to attract and explain to newbies. Thumbs down. The original is WAAAAY better
A clear attempt at softening the game and promoting the womens league. Insert female voice over, womens highlights, show women in the crowd, simplify the explanations and show footage family/kids. Could have been produced with the highlights, passion, excitement and brutality that makes the game whilst still showing diversity
The point is it's like learning a new language (but obviously a lot simpler). That's why it needs more explanation. Easy to say like speaking to a 4 year old when you grow up knowing the sport.
'Buddy's 1000th goal, with fans storming onto the pitch', firstly, storming the ground isn't something to promote, and secondly and more importantly don't ever call it pitch! Sorry Rob, gotta disagree with you on that one. Also, in 2023 there's 18 teams in the AFLW, but obviously not when this was made, the Womens league is gathering strength, that AFL or Teams are even paying them more this year, nothing compared to the Men, but it's a start. Although, I'll agree, the older one was better.
Whoever made this "new" AFL video has no idea. AFL is fantastic, big hits, marks, skills etc. This video is so boring even as an Australian I find it almost embarrassing.
This one is generic and targeted at Australian’s, especially kids, who don’t already know much about the game… Whereas the first one was specifically targeted for American’s to introduce them to the game. Hence, the American voicing the original, the “it’s not rugby”, the conversion of meters to yards and so on…
@@RobReacts1 being at GF doesn't make you a footy expert. It's like calling yourself an NFL Fan and just turn on for the Superbowl. And to your question: i have been to 5 grandfinals out of 7 chances. Besides that i am going to at least 15 AFL Games per season

I agree Rob, I prefer the original too
I think Rob’s critique is very interesting and fair.
Yes, AFL has got me hooked! I'm not looking forward to the early mornings again in a couple of weeks! 😜
This so much better than the original
Take all your points Rob but as far as personal view of the two I come down for the new one because it includes AFLW and has Aussie accent , not Yank (for which it was obviously targeted at). But don’t mind which people go for, as long as they work 🏉
I aggressively with you. Particularly the comparison between the size of pitches.
AFLW, not WAFL (which is the Western Australian Football League)
@@suemoore984 thanks, you’re right, I should have known that because I lived in WA for a few years. I’ve changed it.
Well at least this version was made by Australians, and they explain how the scoring works
The original was made by Australians as well (it's an official AFL production), it just had an American voice-over to appeal to it's target market - people who don't know about the sport.
@@Mirrorgirl492 ok, I didn’t know that.
So happy to have you guys join in, Rob & Charlie! 🙏😄 West Coast will be up, this year (I hope!)!
Erm... I think the bottom 2 spots is reserved for west coast 😅
@@RobReacts1 F you, Rob! 😉
Last year they had the attendance at something like 100,024
@@RobReacts1 And you guys were 2 of those 100,024. Awesome!
Just remember Len, the Premiership is not decided in March.
Yay!
@@martinhayward4466 I didn't say they would win the Premiership, just that they looked very fit and primed for a strong season.
But with a UA-cam video you need to hook people in the first 30secs
I prefer the intensity of the old. But the new one seems to leave people far less confused when they’re reacting to it lol
So they explained the rules and the nuances a bit better.
I do like the humour of the new one though lol
This version is much better. Addressed all the gripes I had with the first one.
You need to watch this documentary on UA-cam.
100 Years of Australian Football 1996 Full Documentary
I definitely think it explains the rules better than the original.
All the grounds are different, but I think there are min and max dimensions defined in the rules (at least for the major leagues)
I think this one is better.
They certainly covered the scoring better, no-one understood it in the first one!
Go Cats.......
I think they've done a good job, the production itself is much more polished and they explain the important points in a much better way.
This will go viral for the next two weeks prior to Round 1.
Has too much Sydney though, needs more Port Adelaide ;)
Absolutely more Port Adelaide !! no one can have too much Power !! :)
Can never get enough of Sydney
@@its-thom lol
haha Sydney is the good bit about the new vid!
@@RobReacts1 pfft
This clip is far better. More directions (arrows) and importantly how the score is worked out. 95% of viewers haven't a clue of what 20 10 130 is. I don't think it matters much re the speccys at the start as most will watch the whole clip anyway. Agreed re the ground size of sport comparison. This is very much an Aussie version for a world audience while the original one was done for an American viewer mainly (16 yards not 15 metres). A few points missed like the boundary throw in but these are minor compared to the basics which most newbies need at the start in understanding the sport.
Yea I do like the arrows and editing.
good one. Suggest you watch some Auzzie the eagle flying round Perth Stadium. Yes, she's a real eagle... with a camera on her back.
this one ua-cam.com/video/na4JsojgGK0/v-deo.html
I guess the point is you can still watch the old one but 100% needed to be updated …
March 16th and we're away. Can't wait. GO BLUES!
What is the video that features you and Charlie ?
I dont think there is one.
The Suncorp Super netball - better than England 😉
Your best players come here in their prime to compete with the best and become the best - England's Helen Housby is one of my favourite players.
I dont know if I can get into watching more sport! haha I only have a certain amount of time in my days
It's definitely about hooking people in the first 30 secs
I'm with you Rob.
As an Australian I find this AFL video very boring compared to the previous version.
Rob, you really need to support a club near you in the afl Europe league
I have looked and there are teams... Sort of... But none of the website show games being played.
I'm an Aussie and already a fan, but the second video was far superior to the one with the American narrator. Just this man's opinion though.
There are 18 women's teams in the Women's AFL.
Smart bloke 👍 you have graduated 🎓 👏 👍
One of the greatest sports on earth,, go the mighty Pies🤣
I often feel like it’s one of the more pure interpretations of “we like kicking a ball around, how do we make this a formal game,” without descending into “so there’s zones of control, and this line and that line, and you only get to possess the ball this many times before you’re forced to hand it over… etc”
That’s not to knock sports that have those restrictions, but they create a different vibe for me
It’s not as exciting as the one made for the Americans but good to see everyone included 😊
Not long now Rob, just over a week. Are we getting excited.......?
Extremely!!
Not a great sports fan but the first time I saw Aussie rules my initial thought was it’s a contradiction in terms!
Rob, IMO it’s not which one is better. It’s would it still have got you to watch a game, is probably a more important question. Like if you had not seen the original video, would it have peaked enough interest for you???
Very true. And with my comments about the poor choice of footage in the first 30secs, I think the first one. Well the first one actually did 😜
I disagree, this version is so much better than the original video..
But does it hook you if you're a newbie?!
Actually this version is so much worse than the original.
Here's a short video essay on the history and culture of the game:

@@RobReacts1 Lift that noble banner high,
Rob, you ain't need this beginner's stuff! 😉
Get some air in the Sherrin Rob. Looks a little flat.
Rob, a touch of Deja vu, 12 months ago lol. And I’m not hitting like or subscribe - I already did that a year ago lol 👍
😊
Couldn't agree more. I think they were so focused on female inclusion that they missed some opportunities to highlight the spectacular. Check out the "Are the St Kilda Football Club the unluckiest AFL club?". Go Saints!
Good to see the girls included
I think the original was far superior and only needed two minor additions. They needed to explain the scoring and scoreline more thoroughly. And they needed to add the 'ba bow' sound-effect when he 'hits the post'. Also, like it or not the slightly American Accent is more understandable to a wider world audience.
I find this new version to be a little condescending. I think it tries to be too many things to too many people.
Aflw….just can’t get into it Rather be watching the traffic lights change colour
Rob How about your cat dressed in AFL Sydney swans gear kicking a footy on a tee shirt
Oh that's a good idea!
Been watching footy for 50 years and love it. But this is such a lame attempt to attract and explain to newbies. Thumbs down. The original is WAAAAY better
AFLWoman's has 18 teams
Glad you enjoy watching AFL.
A clear attempt at softening the game and promoting the womens league. Insert female voice over, womens highlights, show women in the crowd, simplify the explanations and show footage family/kids.
Could have been produced with the highlights, passion, excitement and brutality that makes the game whilst still showing diversity
the older version is way better this version sounds like explaining it to a 4 year old
The point is it's like learning a new language (but obviously a lot simpler). That's why it needs more explanation. Easy to say like speaking to a 4 year old when you grow up knowing the sport.
@@grahamjeffries1058 but it be better without the one liners
The voice over for that beginners guide video is so cringe. Makes me feel embarrassed having to listen to them. 😅
Vocal fryyyyyy, and needy. "So this is us. What do you think of us". Bluck!
Good poiint about Buddys 1000th, but I was just using an example :)
Hey Rob. Have watched your vids since the start. Is your forehead getting bigger?
I'm sure it's as big as it was back then 😉
Whoever made this "new" AFL video has no idea.
Hence, the American voicing the original, the “it’s not rugby”, the conversion of meters to yards and so on…
The original was heaps better than this one
I saw a Total lack of Carlton exposure.........Completely BIASED.
Haha
That Guide was pretty rubbish. Seemed to be aimed at 5yo's.
The title is "Beginner's"! 😒
Yea to be fair, it is aimed at people who have never seen the sport before
Just more woke, carn the Saints.............
Woke isn't a real thing...
How about people in the UK stick to the premier league and australians to the AFL. Problem solved 😌
Seems a bit harsh. Considering im from the UK and been the the AFL grand final. How many have you been to? ;)
@@RobReacts1 being at GF doesn't make you a footy expert. It's like calling yourself an NFL Fan and just turn on for the Superbowl. And to your question: i have been to 5 grandfinals out of 7 chances. Besides that i am going to at least 15 AFL Games per season
@@scruffy_cockatoo I never said I was an expert. But your comment sums up one of the problems with Aussies and AFL, you dont want other to enjoy it (You are in the small minority may I add). I traveled thousands of miles because I love AFL. Why should I stick to the Premier League...
The original version was probably outsourced... this one felt designed by a boardroom committee.
Yeah was made for Americans that’s why they used the Impera system for measurements 😂
This ones better than the other, as most foreigners have no clue what or how the games played, Its ok if you already know the game, aussies grew up with it, try explaining it to an american who has never seen it.
Yes, I have noticed Americans have watched about 3 AFL videos before they understand what it's about! 😂
Pretty much agree with the fact that even thought the new versions is much better in terms of quality, it lacks the excitement.
I’ve got a new video suggestion for you that I think you’ll like. Came across it the other day. A compilation of AFL journalists fighting.

There’s also a second compilation made by the same channel.
I will agree the quality and visuals for the new one are better
