I am so grateful to Andrew and the team at Carmarthen Bay Ferries for inviting me to take a look at their amazing and unique transport device. It's a boat.. but it drives, so it's a car, but it floats, so it's a boat... say what!? When did you last see a contraption like this!?
Good news though, you can take a trip on this amazing boat (we'll go with that) with tours and tickets available from www.carmarthenbayferries.co.uk/
For details on the upcoming boat trips and tours head over to www.carmarthenbayferries.co.u... for details. You'll have a great day out and be supporting a bunch of the most lovely and enthusiastic people that will make your day just lovely.

Tom Scott looks different today
hes given up so its johns turn
It's because he's not wearing his red shirt.
Tom forgot his vape this morning
Nature abhors a vacuum
Yeah, I asked Tom aged ago, he said no, so Jon's won!
_Nauto_ Shenanigans! 🚣
Winner
@@AutoShenanigans I love the fact that UA-cam is offering to "Translate to English"
I saw what you did there. Is this the first time Mr. Shenanigan has given us an amphibious episode?
GENIUS!!
I liked this comment, so I clicked the button specifically for that.
Ahh the Tom Scott of transport, if Tom Scott were cuttingly sarcastic
They just need to call the boat Boaty McBoatface and hordes of tourists will want to visit.
Wheely Taff Amphibious Wheelface?
It's just like a boat that keeps its trailer on and just goes for it.
I find it weird that Beanie Jon's twin, flat cap Jon sits in the studio and pulls the strings as he sends Beanie Jon across the country on various quests.
Funny how you never see them both in the same place at the same time.
Flat cap jon is the employer, beanie jon is the employee.
Great little video promoting this ferry, maybe try getting this video on their website too, as they've already got another up.
I hope it now generates enough income to cover the cost of the boat fuel, it's upkeep, and the paid skipper.
The awarded grant it received originally only stretched so far and after covid, it's all now public funded and no government grants.
So hopefully, it's successful and makes a good return during the upcoming Summer season 😊
Auto Shenanigans, continuing to teach me about stuff I never knew I wanted to know.
you are tom scott now, you may not reject this promotion
Half boat, half Reliant Robin.
Cheers Jon for our hump day extravaganza 👍🏼
Reminds me of professor Pat Pending.❤
Yes! I knew it looked familiar.
That takes me back LOL
Proper public service broadcasting - Auto Shenanigans informs and entertains every time.
Add a glass of bubbly for the party goers, coffee and sandwiches for the hikers and ice cream for the kids and the public will love it. Gotta think of a broad-based attraction.
Dont forget the WiFi
I like this video so I pressed the button specifically for that 👉🏻
🤣
Good thinking, wish I'd thought of that
I like this comment so I pressed the button specifically for that 👉
Frickensweetawesome .
I've been looking for that button for ages
We've had these in New Zealand for twenty years under the name of Sealegs.
Great if you live with access to a beach because they're not licensed for use on the road. You see a few in summer at seaside camping grounds where they work well, no mucking around with trailers and the usual hassle of launching and retrieving your boat. Take it there and back on a normal boat trailer, but while at the campground leave it on its own wheels. Not cheap though.
This has Tom Scott vibes. I’m good with it.
The rare amphibious sheep are worried now, no hiding from them in slingback wellies and a glint in their eye ;)
Yo dawg, I herd ewe like herding ewes with floaties… 😂
That would definitely been a super-star prize on Bullseye back in the day!
Hello, John. How the Devil are you?
Have you had a good week?
Even though I grew up in South Wales I had no idea that this existed! Thanks for the education lesson! 😂
Another splendid reason to visit this gorgeous part of the UK. ❤
Or they could have just bought a hovercraft from Griffon Hoverworks (a UK manufacturer of commercial hovercraft used for ferries etc)
Hover craft need a LOT of fuel.
@@thedave7760Not only that, but they are also very expensive to maintain.
@@alastairoxby8037 And they are obnoxiously loud.
I ran a little fishing boat date back in Hong Kong before 2020. What a useful "landing gears" design for the boat and it makes things easier and safer!
I have experience launching boats by crane, or human power to push boats through the beach and believe me, launching or recovering boats are really hard job and sometimes dangerous, as the boat may over your head or someone's head, or get stuck all the time in the sandy beach that need a puller to get it free and rush to the water again.
Oh one more thing to me is the Yamaha outboard engine. It is the mighty Yamaha F115B! My previous boat is one single Yamaha F115A outboard which has never failed me
Thanks for the great content again Jon, looking forward to having a trip on this boat trip!
Mad coincidence, I’m currently 20 minutes from Llansteffan.
In which direction and by what mode of transport?
Awesome to see this as it’s just down the road from me. Remember when I first saw it emerging from the water, couldn’t quite believe it.
Vernon Kay was talking about roundabouts on his radio 2 show this morning in particular Colchester. I immediately thought there is one one man that could explain it
I heard that too and thought the same. Maybe he or his producer is a viewer!
How cool is that what a fantastic solution
once upon a time this would've been considered for hovercraft, but alas that is a technology no longer efficient enough so new workarounds need be used.
I was wondering about this myself
Fuel costs have risen. However the new diesel hovercraft are quite efficient. But someone would have to specify and build one the correct size. This fits between the largest amateur hovercraft and the smallest commercial one.
@@paulsengupta971
Thank you that is very insightful comment and i am happy you took your time to make it.
i am entirely unaware of which ones are available so your context dose fill in large gaps in my comprehension of the situation.
And offcourse as fan of strange modes of transportation and or unusual itterations of usual transportation i adore hvoercrafts so thats knowlidge i shalt treasure.
You had me sold right up till you said £20 a ticket. Its london prices in Wales. 😂
that's what I thought ..... 🤪
The narrower the stretch of water to be crossed, the more it costs. The Solent? Straits of Dover?
I agree but it's cheaper than taking a helicopter which would take a similar time.
Nice one Jon, reminds
me of Joe 90s green thing that he used to get about in.
So, will this appear in the Tom Scott news letter next week...
Cracking idea! Looks great fun. Now you have to go on the burgh island sea tractor!
Hey MNIJ, thx again for bringing us these gems. Looks fab and a 'must do'. I'm off to find my sea legs... 🤭
Another great episode thanks 😀👍👍
Captain Pugwash theme in there I noticed.
manned by Ordinary Seaman Staines...
@@JohnSmith-pl2bk no such character 😉
@@MrBwian
The British Captain Pugwash animated television series, which originally aired on the BBC between 1958 and 1967, is widely believed to have featured characters with risqué maritime names such as Master Bates, Seaman Staines, and Roger the Cabin Boy. In fact, the crew of the famous Black Pig ship included sailors with no such names.
@@JohnSmith-pl2bk like I said, no such character, I knew that from memory
@@MrBwian. I still wouldn’t like to be ‘pugwashed’
I have seen a boat like that one. It’s amazing to see how a boat can be used on land as well in water. Very fascinating.
ooh we spent a week in a cottage there... lovely place.
Next stop has to be the Burgh Island Sea Tractor? Lots of history and a cool sea tractor to boot. Must be on Jon's hit list!
Thanks, Jon. My Welsh genes are singing right now! I love gizmos and interesting machines, and this one is great. Have a great week, whatever you're up to. 😂🤣😎🤗
Thanks a lot mate! cael wythnos dda.
This reminds me of that episode of James May's Man-Lab where they built a coracle to get across a body of water shorter than it would take to walk. As for wheeled boats, I remember there was one on Herm Island back in the noughties when I used to holiday there as a kid. No cars were allowed on the island so I was baffled as to what was leaving these tyre tracks in the sand as they were too wide for the quadbikes
There's one at St. Michael's Moubt in Cornwall, but it's not open to the public, just visiting dignitaries. I and many others watched the late Queen use it in 2103, and I've seen it on many occasions between the beach at Marazion and the island, You can't expect the posh people to use the little open ferry that normally runs when the tide is in.
Sadly it hardly ever runs and is hugely expensive per trip when it does. I can see that it is a lot of fun for the team who got the funding for it, but for someone wishing to visit Llansteffan from the east, especially if a family, it’s a non starter. Last time I walked past the compound in which it is stored, it was surrounded by overgrown weeds.
I could be wrong, but I thought historical ferry crossings were protected under the heritage laws. So glad they brought this one back, especially now that the vehicle is slightly more interesting than a standard boat. Most excellent ending. I almost stood to attention.
I love amphibious vehicles.
So it's a WW2 duck with legs. Nice.
You can still ride those WW2 ducks in London, see the sights from land and from the Thames in one trip... At least you could until Thames Water closed down the only slipway they could use to build a super sewer but it sounds like there is an update on this expected this year.
@@andyjdhurley Used to enjoy a trip on the Duck though I think one sunk in the Thames so a few people got damp and probably diseased given the crap Thames Water have been pumping into the river(s) over the years
@@andyjdhurleypretty sure the DUKWs got banned after a fatal accident with one in the USA.
@@richardharrold9736 They're still operating in Windsor so not banned.
Fascinating.
I guess it's cheaper (and quieter) to operate than a hovercraft, which would also shrug off the issues with travelling over land. Although if it were a hovercraft, you could run an unlicenced bar on the trip across.
No. I think you need to be outside of the national boundry of 14 miles.
Llansteffan is about a mile from where my sister lives. My niece was a barmaid in the castle inn whose landlady used to work with my brother in Marlow. My father's ashes were scattered near Llansteffan castle and my mithers scattered in the garden of my sisters 11 acre smallholding in Llangain. Llansteffan means church in Welsh
Ferry nice indeed.
Way cool. Thanks for sharing.
After Cruising the Cut did his video on this I looked it up. They spent a ton (£300,000 is oft quoted) on a bespoke solution that performs measurably worse than a small passenger carrying hovercraft which could have been bought for a lot less (used passenger hovercraft could be had for under £200,000 at the time). Supposedly this thing does occasionally get stuck in the mud. Hovercraft were invented for exactly these sorts of situations...
False economy if maintenance costs for the hovercraft are an arm and a leg.
@@David_Crayford That's true, although operating what is essentially a one-of-a-kind prototype isn't going to be cost free either. If they'd managed to get a used Griffen hovercraft, they're an off the shelf product that is manufactured and supported right here in the UK.
Brilliant!
Excellent video again, Jon.
“Pay attention 007. This is Wet Nelly Mk III…”
Excellent.
Fascinating this one Jon 👍🏻
What a brilliantly simple idea and retrospectively obvious solution. Great video and a fantastic bit of promo 👍👍👍.
It’s a boatcar boaty driving car boat.
Beautiful
Fun and informative!
What a cool boat. Enjoyed this
Great video Jon. What an amazing piece of kit. Definitely worth the trip for you to see 😊👍🏼
this is amzazing, what a fantastic piece of modern engenering
Well done guys very eye opening !!!! 3:10
Great episode
I have seen boats that have wheels and still use water. Very interesting to see boat that can be used on the road and in water.
I saw something similar that once in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue.
That was a ferry interesting video, cheers
I'm good Jon, thanks for..... Wait a minute!
Cool vehicle, £20 for a ferry trip across an estuary seems a bit steep though
That's not even half a tank of petrol, a round of drinks, a small bag of shopping or an Indian. Seems legit.
@@BromideBride it's not half a tank but, the car will take ALL the family on that gallon of fuel. £20 a piece makes it an expensive trip for a family.
I think the £20 was for the private hire journeys.
C😎😎L bit of kit that. Surprised its the only one over here though
Brilliant. Too expensive to build a bridge and the road journey is long, so this is just the right solution to join the villages.
New Zealand has some good ideas when it comes to small craft- the Hamilton Jet Boats are pretty good too.
Cool AF 😎
Quality
Interesting thank you
you created insane trip,
Cool man
Next stop is the Sea Tractor at South Sands beach Devon then 😉
Maritime activities are popular in New Zealand , being that it's a large archipelago in the middle of the South Pacific
genius move this. We need more inland ferries. Great video.
There is also a different take on a tidal ferry - the Burgh Island Sea Tractor.
Nice
This boat is great 👍
Back when I lived in Swansea,I always wondered if Ferryside used to operate a Ferryand where it connected.
wow, I'd love to go on that boat trip
Best outrow music!
4:44 - I like how you got that tiny shot - er - opinion in.
Great video, imo.
Thanks for getting up at (to me) an unspeakable hour to film it.

Fabulous...! A James Bond ferry...
We have "Tinnies: boats here in Aus, people love them. (Yes made of aluminium.)
Sweet bit o kit. Next week, Salcombe sea tractor
Fascinating stuff. I think your audience might be interested if you visited the Sea Tractor at Bigbury/Burgh Island on the South Devon coast.
Cool, I like that :-)
That was a wonderful presentation. I would love to take a ride on that ferry. Someday, if I make it back to Wales, I'll check this out. Thank you. 🛥
Wheely clever. (gets coat).
nice.
In Windsor, we have a DUKW (AKA Duck) which is a 2nd WW amphibious landing craft, it gives tours down the Thames, out up a slipway, then back to the start by road. OTOH, you wouldn't catch me on it, its ugly and unwieldy. This one looks very elegant.
Lol. Aww cute little boat. We got one like this in Penzance but much bigger
Genius
I am camping in the area in a couple of weeks I may just take the wife and kids on this boat, they will hate it but I think it looks great fun so stuff them.
Thanks for the video.
Love your attitude. Loll!
When i was younger i remember seeing a bigger bout with wheels at hunstanton beach
Ahhh llansteffan. My favourite beach in the whole of the British isles.
Last week black cat roundabout, this week llansteffan, are you following me??
