  • 086 - Emission and Absorption Spectra
    In this video Paul Andersen explains how the photons emitted from or absorbed by an atom or nuclei is directly related to electrons moving between energy level. Absorption and emission are a direct result of the conservation of energy. Scientists may use the emission spectra of material to determine the atoms or molecules contained within the material.

    This video is the most compact video out there, the 5 min lecture seems very easy but you need to watch it more than 10 times to understand it if you're a beginner. Teachers generally skip the introduction of prism , and shining light. Thank you for this amazing lecture ❤️

      Energy isn't created or destroyed so the light wave that bounces off and the waves that arte absorbed by atoms have to do something. That something is to add energy to the atom (absorbed, the colors you don't see) or take energy out (emissions or emitted, the color you see). If you know the energy level of an element, when you shine a laser through it, you will be able to tell what element it is based on the combined energy of the element atom and the laser light, since energy cannot be destroyed. That's how spectroscopy is done I think. I'm not a scientist but I'm pretty sure that's how it works

    Beautiful job as usual, though on this particular crucially important learning milestone, it would be nice if you could "slow down", be more intricately descriptive, with slight pauses for (absorption) "pun intended". This is such an important step in understanding light, chemistry, physics, astronomy. It really needs to be driven home strongly. Thanks for trying to help us morons.

    Only high energy light like UV and XRay make an electron jump to the next shell - ionizing energy. Lower energy light like IR is absorbed by the nucleus of the molecule at energy levels corresponding to frequencies at which the nucleus vibrates.

    Why does hitting it with electrons cause it to emit light? Electrons aren't photons, so I don't get why this would excite the atom?
    And also, why would you get different colours in a continuous stream?

    • @AndyNguyen-qy6ll
      @AndyNguyen-qy6ll 8 років тому +5

    Why does it give different colours of photons? Doesn't the electron want to go back to its ground state in one go? If that's the case it shud form a photon of only a specific wavelength depends on the energy difference between the two orbits...do the atoms absorb energy differently? Why does we get different colours
