This song guts me everytime I hear it. My ex husband had tried to kill himself. Thankfully, I got him to the hospital in time. But, He was put on dialysis because the attempt shut his kidneys down. He did it on my birthday too, which is a couple weeks before Christmas. He was in the hospital under intensive care, and I had to work. My last working day before Christmas, I was driving to spend it with him, and this came on. I was so overwhelmed with everything, and the song hit me hard. I broke down in tears and had to wait to go in. That was 6 years ago and when I hear the song, I still weep. Some songs just hold emotional responses, and this is one. ❤ I miss the good times we had, but not the emotional trauma he put me through.

I just got out of prison after a decade. Stove up emotionally, and damned near incapable of emoting. I got turned onto Sturgill by my brother, and have had it on repeat for a minute, tearing up, and loving this song. You're right, he owned this song, better than When In Rome... By a sight.
I loved this song at the first listen and bought the CD and loved that and would play The Promise as loud as possible and loved the experience almost in a different reality of heightened emotion and especially love. It was a different experience that I ever heard in my 60 years of loving music. Truly one of my favorites of all time.
