    I used to wonder who took care of these people when they were children, since their parents were likely to reject them or keep them hidden. It horrified me but did not surprise me to learn their parents SOLD them to the circus, maybe to get rid of them and to benefit financially, while the circus raked in money by exploiting them, and all for "abnormalities" that they were born with and were not their fault. I do wonder how the circus people knew about such births, unless hospitals had some kind of a deal with them. What an awful situation!

      Tess Tickles I think they mean the parents beating the conjoinied twins and some of the others performers misfortune. Not the fact they starred in the movie.

    I knew the Hilton Sisters. Daisy and VIOLET were amazing women but in their last years in North Carolina gradually went downhill.
    Daisy became sick, and they decided not to seek help. Daisy did die first and Violet, suffering from the same infection died almost 48 hours later.

    Its really sad that some of these people were 'sold' to a circus by their families.

    man i can't imagine what it must have been like being conjoined to someone and being unable to remove myself while i watch them die with the knowledge that i'd inevitably succumb to the same fate sooner rather than later. just having to be there with their corpse, which would also be part of my own body, until i follow suite.

    The only reason I down vote this video is because the slides go by too quick and you don't give enough time for the reader to fully read whats said on the screen before the next one pops up. This would be given a poor grade if this video was an assignment.

    And the spelling/grammar is sometimes just horrible.

    ☝️ I agree! The text goes by waaaay too fast!! I’ve always been able to read 2 grades faster then others and even I can’t keep up! Also, I’m pretty sure what you meant to say for the bird girl is that she was Near sighted, or Far sighted..

  • @misalarkin4068

    The first time I saw this wonderful film @ our local repertory theater, I remember being so impressed watching the elegant efficiency of ‘Prince Randian’ as he pulled out his pouch of tobacco & papers, pouring the tobacco along the paper; -and voila! -rolling up a perfect cigarette, striking a match and lighting it…. (far, far more efficiently than I ever could ) -And I will treasure that memory, -because I’ve NEVER seen that (entire) scene again. It somehow had become reduced to him pulling out the pouch,opening it, & then lighting the cigarette Nothing more, the entire center part w/ him preparing and ROLLING the cigarette was MISSING… and no-one seemed to notice the difference..(!?) They released a remastered version of it, (on vhs, this was me id-80’s) & thought ‘surely it’ll be on that’…. Nope. I began to question my own sanity-‘Had I imagined it?’ Had I been hallucinating?’ So, I mentioned it to my friend who worked @ the theater, & she thought about it & said -‘No, you’re RIGHT, -I DO remember seeing that the first time we had the film- some projectionist along the way probably snipped it for his collection’ -(?!!!) Yoiks! @the time, it just hadn’t occurred to me that people could be so dastardly…! To this day, I’ve yet to find a copy that has the entire scene in it (tho I’m sure they’re out there) - it’s hard to believe they remastered it even once w/o checking to see if it was a complete version.!

    It bothers me they put them in a movie and called them a freaks so direspectful

    • @em5114
      @em5114 4 роки тому +6

      There’s debate around this movie, but a lot of film scholars concur that it’s one of the most positive and humanising examples of Freak Shows in media, especially for such an old movie. The film actually shows the cast as individual people with real lives rather than just as attractions. That was a very rare thing in those days, and really even now. To this day it’s rare that we see people with physical disabilities and abnormalities in popular media, and even rarer that those characters are treated as individuals. It’s also important to note that the concept of what “freak” means, the connotations, the stigma, etc has such a long history that them having the title of “freak” can’t necessarily be judged by our standards.

    • @dielitadvocate

      Desert leopard I've watched the movie and the deleted scenes that haven't been lost and like I said they get there revenge when they castrate the big man and turn the woman , can't remember either of there names into the duck woman for some reason on UA-cam they cut even what they edited it to at the end off
