She’s similar but very different from your past relationships. Actually makes me smile a lot to see ya happy. Keep up the great work in your relationship and vlogging!!
Hanna made my statement as I was typing it. If it ever came to a question of her wearing a kimono for a ceremony I would leave that to Joe's mom. Don't worry what others outside your life have to say. Just love and be happy, there is always someone who is miserable trying to judge others. 💖❤
I understand where you guys are coming from! My husband is Chinese and we communicate in mandarin since we met in China. We had a traditional ceremony there and I even asked if it was appropriate for me to wear a qipao. It was acceptable for him and his family--actually it would be rude to decline to not participate in any customs/wear heritage dress. Even speaking his language was not a problem, it was accepted and also natural to do so. However moving to the US, it is a bit different. We still use mandarin, and I've been assumed as the insurance company translator at medical visits, or solely his interpreter (slightly insulting, but I understand--not common). Other times, although my lifestyle has adopted many of the habits living in China and with his family... I still need to be careful of offending anyone, I understand there is a lot of pain that many Asian and Chinese Americans feel and like Joe said, not everyone thinks or feels the same way. But on my part, it is best to error on caution in respect (for me personally). But if I am with my husband and my daughter, we are our own mixed culture/language family and thats our reality. I want my daughter to be proud of her heritage and celebrate the beauty in the culture. :)
That’s awesome! if he’s from China he probably won’t have the same thoughts as someone who grew up here about culture clashes and what’s considered offensive too but it’s so good to bridge cultures and I think mixed couples become mini ambassadors ahaha
Idk man…. I think this is the ONE, Joe. She definitely compliments you in so many ways. Joe, you look so happy with her. Something about your vibe just seems so light & bright since you’ve introduced her to us!
Mexican and Chinese tend to mix well. I always got along with my ex co-workers who were Mexican while I’m Chinese. They ate Chinese food and I ate Mexican. Our cultures may have something connected in our past.
I completely understand when you mentioned "because i'm american i feel like i have rights" and she was more modest. I have a husband and he is chinese and spent 10 years in france. He is constantly telling to care how people see you and feel. For me, I always felt "i have rights. i am who i am and I won't change for no one" but being now in france for 3 years now, I do feel the change from wearing yoga pants in the usa everywhere to getting all dressed to go grocery shopping
Do u speak French too? I remember it being easy to speak English in Paris and still exist. Also that stereotype about French being mean, I didn’t feel it. I thought French people were funny and friendly because they like to roast and I roast back.
It’s always nice to see another couple that’s wfam couple too. It took a little while to get use to the different dishes and culture. Once I prove to the elder family members that I’m respectful to the culture and norm and love it. They welcomed me to the family, it’s the best feeling.
I personally think its cool for someone to respectfully enjoy or partake in my culture. The problem is when they misrepresent that culture or claim it as their own without crediting the originators. Give credit where it's due!
My sister’s MIL went to high school in Japan. She has authentic kimono from when she lived there for festivals and celebrations. She’s been approached and accused of cultural appropriation for wearing kimono to events here in the United States. If you see this I’m curious what your take is on it? Is it cultural appropriation since she is a white woman with red hair or is she just embracing a culture that was a part of her life for several years?
I feel like it’s about intention and how you’re respecting the culture (like in what setting your sister is wearing the kimono, most likely not to a club or etc) Your sister is well intentioned and is just embracing the culture she experienced abroad! It sucks that strangers accuses her although they don’t even know her or experience… just my take on it
Yea it depends on who is accusing her of appropriating. It’s unfair when people don’t try to understand because everything is case by case. Just seeing a non Japanese in a kimono doesn’t constitute appropriation imo. In Japan people love seeing foreigners wear kimono because they think it’s cute and feel appreciated. Not all Japanese Americans agree tho. I think this is from different perspective of how Asians grow up being bullied or media misinterpretation so some people have sensitivity toward feeling mocked or hijacked. I don’t really care because I try to look at a persons intent before accusing and judging people
Love both of you Joe. I really appreciate you're still doing the vlogs. Been watching since 2011 and it's really comforting to grow and navigate through this life ''with'' you kinda. Thank you for that. I hope we can someday share a meal together. Or jump off a plane or sth. Take care Joe! Much love
I despise what JK has become but I will support Bart and Joe till my dying day for getting me through the worst depression I have had a couple of years ago. I don't agree with a single business decision or company direction you guys have made but I will always respect and follow you guys, albeit more sporadically. For me JK will always be Bart, Joe, Geo, Tiff, Casey, Tommy, David, Gina and Hoolia. Sad what it has become but nothing I can do about it except cheer you on in life and business even if it isn't my cup of tea. Thanks, Joe.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Chinese people distinguish meal types by time of day. For instance, westerners typically don't eat pancakes and scrambled eggs for dinner because they're considered breakfast food. There's no such thing as Chinese breakfast food.
I definitely hear you guys. My husbands background is German/Mexican and I'm Filipino, there's things you just learn about each other over the years and all the cultural nuances that come with that. Personally, it made us better communicators. Also, I'm just gonna say what everyone is thinking....Hannah's the one🥰
Good to hear you might live in Vegas bro. I plan to move there as well. Been looking at houses in Henderson, but now I found something with 1.5 acres in Spring Valley I'm more interested in. I'll probably see you around in the casinos.
Appropriation for me would be commoditization of a culture and trying to exploit it for their own gains. Appreciation and appropriation is often confused.
good definition, how do we differentiate like dude in my example. jewish ramen master who won awards in japan and opens in nyc? hes profiting but also i feel like he did his work to do it well. where someone busts out top ramen and calls it a day. maybe laziness is what makes everyone mad?
I love the car conversation sad happens with Latinos !!! It’s hard to agree on what is ok and what’s not good my family is multi cultured as well but also I don’t get recipes for Mexican food if the person isn’t Mexican but it’s because a lot of people tend to twist the authenticity of the food and just kill it lol
That’s crazy I just had the conversation with a friend before! In my opinion I think of it more as appreciation and finding aspects of different cultures beautiful. Especially if you’re an artsy person you’ll appreciate everything beautiful and artistic and want to know more about it! People are to quick to assume and to comfortable shaming people without knowing their intent and where they’re coming from! Which isn’t cool either! The only time where I can think of appropriating is someone like Oli London where he doesn’t care to learn anything about Korea outside of K-pop and is super disrespectful about it! He’s probably mentally ill but still he’s posing as a Korean because of how popular K-pop has become. Everything else I see as appreciation since most people at least care to educate themselves on history! Like Hannah said it’s important to be considerate and recognize boundaries!
Interesting discussion. My question would be, what distinguishes cultural appropriation vs cultural appreciation. Esp. since, like in food for example, when people do a fusion of different flavors from different countries to make a new and awesome tasting dish. I really like yours and Hannah's conversations. And she is right about how when you hang around different people it is easier to pick up their mannerisms and sayings. It just happens.
you two are really sweet people. But honestly people should mind their own fucken business. Only time I can say is if you use someone elses culture to make fun of them or hurt them. Otherwise people should mind their own business and live their own life. Most people who say shit are people who is dealing with their own internal struggle. You life is always changing Joe. What I love about you and JK was you guys didnt give a fuck and the skits you guys did was great. Now everyone is just overly sensitive.
As a native Japanese, alot of people here in Japan arent that bothered by westerner’s definition of cultural appropriation like wearing kimono or cooking Japanese food. At the end of the day, they’re just clothes and food. What we do get annoyed by is when foreigners try to change the “narrative” or the origin story of our culture or trends. Like politicizing our culture, trends and fashion and then associating it with some random social movement thats going in the west. We obviously know they’re just utilizing our culture for their own political and social benefit, and feel like we’ve been hijacked or something.
Josep , as a Filipino , Mexican , Portuguese , from Monterey California area , I don't get offended very easily I just really listen using sound reasoning ......
Joe, You are right We should take it case by case..I really don't know anymore, when I was growing up everything was so different lol. Love You Joe, stay safe always 🥰
Joe I’ve learned a lot from Japanese culture either via your channel and Japanese artists. Other than that I only learned from history on Japanese culture. Which was very little. You and Hanna have a blessed weekend. 🤘🏻
Culture is something that is taught, it doesn't run through peoples veins. I think there are words for people who think your genes, or the way you look, put a limit on what you are capable of achieving.
I'm Indian so ask me how the British eff'd the culture of my elders. But if it's done out of respect learning and trying to experience different cultures is a beautiful thing.
If you and Hannah do decide to get married then she can wear what she wants. Since it's not unheard of to dress in the culture of your partners cultural traditions, esp. when you would then be a blended family together. People should understand and just be happy for the two of you, and not make a big deal out of it.
"Appropriation" is a non-issue for me. Just don't go around pushing stereotypes and being racist, don't mock my culture. People "appropriate" from other cultures all the time, ugg boots are Australian, ponchos are Mexican, Qi Paos are Chinese the list goes on and on and on. People are so sensitive these days that they push (some, not all) agendas which only are masquerading as progressive, but in reality seek to divide us further.
Something I’ve noticed about being british (England) is that cultural appropriation over here isn’t as strict as it is over in America.. i feel like people embrace culture more over here 🤷♂️
culture appropriating is when you denounce where its originally from so who gives a shit who care if they copy shit as long as they dont denounce where its from
