Two things I learned many years ago when I visited Lindisfarne: Firstly, it had the only bus service that ran according to the tide tables, and secondly, if the tide was in and there was no policeman on the island, pub opening hours were also alleged to be variable!

Love Holy Island. In the sixties there was a Catholic boy's camp called St Vincent de Pauls on the island and I used to stay there for a fortnight every summer. We had nothing a modern kids would deem necessary to keep them amused but were never bored, and even at age 8 or 9 were allowed to roam the island and swim in the sea unsupervised. Happy days...

What a super video Dara! I only know Lindisfarne as the name of a folk group from the 1970s (they may even still be going - 'Fog on the Tyne' was their biggest hit). Great to learn that it is, in fact, an island way up North. And, what and island too! So much history and great vistas too. This was an epic adventure! Well done, Paul.

Brilliantly done. Love the history of Lindisfarne. Very cool how they printed quotes on to the various knick-knacks in the castle. The Viking raids of Lindisfarne pretty much kicked off the whole Viking incursion into England. Really interesting part of British history. Probably my favourite place in all of England. I'd recommend a walk to the edge of the island past the castle and a relax by the seashore there, where people stack beautiful cairns, and there're other ruins along the way. When on the island last year, we saw a Dragonhead Moth (which resembles a humming bird if you see one flying), it was sipping nectar from flowers. You can get good food from pubs and cafes on the island near the old monastery

1550's so a new build then, there's a castle close to where I live in Yorkshire called Conisbrough Castle, it's had a lick of paint and had a bit of work done, I think the council gave them a warning because the grass was untidy or something like that, it's mostly only one keep, it dates back to the 600's but it was wooden back then, I didn't see it myself, I was told by someone else "promise", well worth a look if you're passing, I can't remember if its England or Britain, but if you put a box around a map of whichever it is and then dissect into quarters, where the lines cross is where Conisbrough is, so the centre Britain or England, I've never tried it, but I believe the person who told me.

I visited Lindisfarne Abbey many years ago (BC = ‘before children’ 😉) and like you, I was absolutely “overwhelmed” by the sheer magnificence of the window framing and the archways and the sentence I just kept on repeating to myself (and speaking out very loud, to no one in particular 😧= oh dear, there’s a lunatic on the loose) was “how did they build it….? How did they get ‘up there’ to do thaaat?? 😳and I was totally amazed by the design, the ‘engineering’ and the sheer size of a building completed over 1,000+ years ago! No hard hats, hi vis jackets or bods carrying a clipboard ensuring H&S regulations were being adhered to in those days … hmmm!
I remembered learning about the Lindisfarne Gospels at Primary school and seeing them at the British Museum - after the school visit, the project was to do “illuminated lettering” using our name initials as our work.
On a side note - did you venture into Berwick upon Tweed - the last “English” town before you cross the border into Scotland? As part of our “Do the North of England” trip, we paid it a visit after visiting Lindisfarne. It was the end of May, Whitsun week and as we drove into the town, we saw young children wearing shorts and singlets playing with footballs on the beach and having a lovely time. We decided to stop and walk along the sea shore as it was such a lovely bright blue sunny day. We parked the car and got out to start our little stroll….”Brrr” said I, “it’s a bit breezy, I’ll wear a coat”! I put my coat on, zipped it up but my hands were a bit cold, so I put them in my pockets…we started walking and oh my liiiiiiife! It was sooooo bitterly cold, the wind coming off the sea was like ice! We carried on walking, noticing that “the locals” were ambling along - no thick jackets or cardigans - just bare armed and legged, enjoying a warm day, whereas husband and I thought we were going to freeze to death! Luckily, a few yards away was the most welcome sight of a pub! Time to go and get warm again and inside was a roaring log fire! So it was cold after all? 🤔😟 we sat so close to the fire as we ate our pub lunch, trying to build up a heat barrier to protect us when we ventured out again to the equivalent of the North Pole to get back to the car! That was one of the times when “we” really lived up to the titles of being “softy Southerners”! Those people who live in and around Berwick are so tough! I have never since, even in a bitter “coldest Winter ever” time, experienced such a temperature where I thought my own blood would freeze! 😱😂😂

Rescue services have been called out four times this year for cars caught out by the tide on the causeway. In June someone got the dates mixed up. They were looking at the times for June 2022 instead of 2023.
Laughing at the halfpenny stamp on the postcard. You need a bank loan to buy a book of stamps these days. 🤣
4:28. My Lancashire grandparents had a coal fired range like that. It was on all day. Winter and summer. My grandmother had to get up half an hour before she went to bed to clean out the ashes, black lead it, then start the fire ready to boil a kettle for 'Mister's' breakfast. (They called each other Mister and Mrs. They had an argument in 1922 and refused to call each other by name). 😁Tell that to the young people of today and they won't believe ya'. 😂
4:46. Alexander Keiller, of marmalade fame, was the chappie that restored Avebury. Re-erecting the standing stones. I sent you a picture of him. The family were the first to sell Dundee cake commercially. They were also the first to put the bits of rind into marmalade. This was the breakthrough that made marmalade thin enough to spread on toast. 🍯
5:11 is a pantry. My grandmother had one like that, but without the stairs.
5:31. The chairs were like that too. I remember my (very Victorian) grandmother telling, nay ORDERING, me to 'Take your feet off the spills'. Spills are the dowels on the chair legs. A word only used in Lancashire I think.
Did you look underneath the beds for the potty? I was told that when I was born my mother threw me under the bed because she thought I was a little potty. 😁😁
    7:22. WOW! What a view!!!
5 Live presenter Naga Munchetti hates the Mr. Whippy kind of ice cream. She thinks it's slimy. Food for a day at the beach? Chips from the local chippy or my special 'Day at the Beach' sandwiches, homemade Scotch Egg and Tesco mini pies and Fanta.
10.03.That's not how you pronounce Chester-Le-Street. It's more like Chesterly Street, although I've never been able to pronounce it exactly right either.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Lindisfarne Gospels. I've only seen Lindisfarne as I was passing on the train. Again, there are no railways stations close. ☹

I was pretty confident that I would pronounce Chester le street incorrectly, but I needed to get the voiceover done so I just jumped into the deep end with reckless abandon!
Thanks so much for all of the nostalgic commentary. Your grandmother sounds like a hoot! And I don't believe the comment you made about your mother 🤣
I would love to eat cheesy chips at the beach rather than Mr. Whippy. For sure! Although my perfect beach meal would need to have the seagulls leave me alone ...

@@MagentaOtterTravels My Lancashire grandmother would make Queen Victoria look like the most amused woman on the planet, and from the photographs I've seen, the look on my great grandmother's face could turn people into stone. 😂
My Scottish grandmother was the polar opposite. Always cheerful. She had a special bunny rabbit tin where she kept 3d pieces which she used to give me when I visited. Guess which grandmother was my favourite? 🤣

The name Lindisfarne jogs memories of a college in Hastings New Zealand. No prize for guessing where the name came from, Yes, named specifically after Lindisfarne Island. Now I've had the privilege of seeing Holy Island through your lens Dara and Ian. Just fabulous. What a history and magnificence. Your impeccable editing and comprehensive narration made this a true treat to watch. We also had to watch the tide when we went to Saint Michael's Island. Walked there and boat back. Great adventure. Have a wonderful weekend. 😎🌺🇳🇱🙋‍♀🇳🇿

@@MagentaOtterTravelsHiya Dara, Us in West Cumbria have a sort of toned down Geordie accent, but the further north you go say up to Carlisle there accents get stronger towards the Geordie accent, say if where in Spain we often get asked "where about's in Newcastle are you from" off these Southerners.

The island lent its name to the legendary Geordie folk rock band Lindsfarne, founded in 1968 and still going, more than half a century later.
