There’s a Roane County in both WV and TN, but the song is about the murder in 1884 of Thomas Galbreath by his brother-in-law Willis Mayberry in Old Oakdale, Roane County, TN. Mayberry left and wandered for 25 years, returning home in 1909, was arrested and tried for murder. He wrote this song while in the courthouse jail.
It’s so sad that Tony can no longer play or sing like he used to be able to. His music will remain some of the very best in the Bluegrass/New Acoustic genre. Thank you Tony for all the wonderful music that you made through the years!
I play guitar and sang this around Texas but I never could quite get Tony's haunting solo anywhere near his way. You didn't happen to tab this out? (asked the guy who has listened to this solo a kabillion time. )
I live a few minutes away from the Roane County line. As weird as it sounds, it's kinda neat to hear such an icon as Tony Rice singing about a place you go to all the time.
Tony's understated but supremely expressive vocals sometimes don't get proper recognition. Maybe it's the almost subliminal subtleties or maybe it's just when he plays a guitar it's hard to notice anything else exists. TR has genius and heart.
He was humble to the point of showing respect to his heros by playing their songs in his unique fashion. He was probably involved with Grisman, Crow and possibly Alison in writing several songs He would always give credit to the original songwriters like a writer's notations in MLA format. I admired that also about his character. His music will continue to spread for many years.
I'm here after hearing of Tony's passing last night. RIP Tony, you put many smiles on many faces and love in many of our hearts !!!
Good Lord what a gifted musician. RIP sir

So sad that this man lost his wonderful singing voice.
Thanks man. Hat a story about song I love much.
With a surname like Roane.. it feels like its fate that one day I visit Roane County.
One of the most powerful recordings he ever made.... Dear Tony, God bless you, God bless you, good-bye.

I remember my dad playing this song when I was young. I imagine that he learned it from hearing the Stanley Brothers play it on the radio.
I am so glad that I got to see him and had a nice conversation with him and Wyatt. He will continue to inspire.
That's my kinda bluegrass......... thanks Tony.
Mine too, love it
Tony will lonesome to the limit. Love how he treats the ol standards.
I think Tony's version of this song is one of the best.
The best. Listen to his break. Unreal !!
The solo in this song still haunts me...I share it with my friends and they are equally amazed! Thanks Mr Tony Rice, you are the Man!!!!

The 12 thumbs down need to get their ears checked
I agree.
Totally agree also. Evidently not true Tony Rice fans. Saw him numerous times. Stellar performances and a stellar individual.
Ive road every inch of Roane county never knew this song very nicely done!
Love you Tony rip
Love this! Something about 3/4 time music...gets to me.
On the money Tony!!!!!!!
Oddly enough, it was an interview with Jerry Garcia that introduced me to Tony Rice.
deich31 it's amazing to think how deep Garcia's bluegrass roots went. Rice is defiantly one of the pioneers !
doesn't seem odd to me. Jerry turned a lot of ppl on to all kinds of things.
Check out The Pizza Tapes, with Garcia, Rice, and David Grisman. You won't be disappointed.
I've never heard this one before, thanks so much for posting!
Beautiful hills 😊
Which Roane County is this song referring to, if any one in particular? Roane County, West Virginia?
Tennessee.
LOVE this song! Thanks a lot for putting this up.
Fave

@@shirleyhoward9523 It's in eastern Tennessee about 30 miles west of Knoxville. It's right outside my window.
Never better.
