Do you need the binder?

It's not compulsory. Someone who's made it sewed the scarf up with just a serger. The seam binding makes the scarf more sturdy if you're sewing it with a regular sewing machine.
Since fleece has some stretch, there's a risk of the scarf being pulled out of shape over time with use without the seam binding.
