Some of the soldiers ordered to stand guard as the tree was cut down had Claymores strapped to their bellies, telling the Norks to come and get them. To be fair to me it felt it was DICE and people connected to them screwing up Battlefield 5. But I give you 2042 being EAs fault as they could not decide if they wanted to make a Battle Royal style or a CoD clone and that ended up messing that game badly. Also adding those named player characters, ugh.
I feel like EA was driving during the development of Hardline and everything after, DICE was largely just a puppet developer by that point. Battlefield 4 was the last true Battlefield game, all the way down to its core.
You talking about Medal of Honor made me feel REALLY old. MoH Frontline and Rising Sun... Still to this day, they had the most memorable opening missions for any game I've played. "Your Finest Hour" on the Beaches of Normandy in Frontline, and living through the attack on Pearl Harbor in Rising Sun. You didn't play those missions... you lived them.
@hardcharging The title and main menu theme to Frontline was amazing. It commanded respect and honor for the fallen. It sounded like something you would hear at a military memorial service, or a ceremony honoring accomplishments. I really wish we could return to that kind of dedication, passion, and respect put into games.
I didn't need to prepare for that last bit, I have long since accepted that the AAA space has been ruined by corporate greed and have been playing mostly indie titles.
I never really got into AAA games because *gestures at old laptop running Linux in central/eastern Europe*, but my improving financial situation is more than matched by the decreasing attractiveness of mainstream games.
@@habitual_linecrosser Fair warning for 4, last I heard the DRM server for it got shut down. They might have a replacement up, but it's 4 so I doubt that would be a priority. Aside from that, Tib Dawn, Red Alert 1, and Tib Sun are all officially freeware, and there's launchers to get them running and keep them updated for free, along with some cool fan projects based on them (e.g. Twisted Insurrection).
I'm with you but I also don't know that I trust a Generals remake in 2024. It very much feels like a product of its time and I'm worried that they'd end up smoothing over certain rough edges to "provide a broader appeal to modern sensibilities and audiences" only to cut out everything that gave it its charm
As someone who is still mad about command and conquer I was quite suprised you would trash on EA like that. Outstanding. Oh and Mass Effect, Dead Space, and Army of Two. EA just kept dropping the ball
EA: "So, Visceral, I know that Dead Space 3 would be perfect if we just follow the formula, but... We need a love triangle and micro transactions, a basic plot, and bad voice acting or we won't give you funding." *10 years later* "So... Motive... I know that Dead Space Remake blew our expectations and players' expectations out the water... But it didn't hit first week sales expectations so it's considered a failure. We're pulling your funding for the Dead Space franchise and will be funneling it towards whatever garbage we come up with next."
Holy shit. Army of Two. I played the first game until the disc stopped working with my buddy back in college! Thanks HL for bringing back good memories.
The battlefield one hurt most for me. The battlefields I grew up with (1942, Vietnam, 2 and 2142) aren't purchasable anywhere, not even in EA's own bloody store, yet they find and shutdown the *free* fan revive projects that try to bring them back
Someone needs to make it a top-secret project making the fan remakes. Launched when complete, on multiple servers around the world, in total secrecy. I'm betting it could be done. Never underestimate Grey Hats when there's White Hat work to be achieved!

The day that Triple A titles get in game ads is the day that most companies will crumble.
Mobile games have them already and more crap from mobile has been infecting PC and console players for some time now. It won't end them because too many people are already desensitized to it. Hell, people were even defending Sony deciding to take away a six month old game from the people who bought it. Yeah, Sony backtracked but companies have been pushing the limits of what they can get away with for a long time and have steadily eroded the resistance to such practices. Eventually the last bastion of games will end up being indie games and all the AAA slop will be like the mobile market. People simply don't care enough to actually stop buying from these companies.
@@fuzzyfox6719do you even need anything but indi these days anyway? I mean, you surely will not get unique gameplay from mammoths of industry (besides Kojima) but AA is already in indi dev team reach
@@fuzzyfox6719 You say that but you have to remember that you're talking about mobile and sports game players. Most of the people who play those games don't play anything else. If EA tries adding that stuff into games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age then I'm sure you'll see a MASSIVE drop in sales. Those games are played by actual gamers. People who are there for the stories and gameplay. Not for their favorite sports team and not to blow time on their phone. We'll see of course. Maybe I'm wrong but in this case I don't think I am. EA has completely forgotten one of the most important parts of making games. The players don't need them. If their product is garbage then no one is gonna buy it. We're not required to give them anything. There are other games out there.

Playstation with their psn account nonsense, Microsoft buying every studio not doing anything with them and then shutting them down, activision blizzard/Ubisoft are fighting tooth and claw to be the worst companies period and right now I'd very much say ubisoft is winning that one, and even Nintendo has all their takedown bullshit and confusion on games prices. The day Nintendo really gives into all of this along with indies, gaming dies period. But hey, hollow knight is $15 everybody, go buy it instead of buying anything put out by EA.

I have seen an ad in a game before. But it was done in really col way while not being in your face. It was for the Book of Eli and they had posters around various maps advertising it. This was in Quake Wars.
I always thought it was cool when they put ads on the walls and billboards in games like Burnout. It added to the immersion, and it wasn't in your face, but we all know that this is EA, and now they will try to put in literal commercials (and probably make you pay to get rid of them).
I saw one in a flash game, The Last Stand: Union City. Con was plugging one of their friends, and the note you find in their in-game store is slightly meta.

This was rather popular back in the 2009-2011 era before the forums shut down. That high school mod carried me into being a beta tester for Supreme Commander 2, where I helped the air balance. Initial testing of supreme commander had air units vastly overtuned and the changes originally proposed didn't seem to work. I ended up doing a long case study of that for a college project and it helped contribute to the current balance of stock air units in supreme commander 2, in regards to the way various air units interact with ground units. Most of the balance numbers I suggested are still in there to this day.
I would love to discuss more about the game I am working on, however I am in the process with a copyright lawyer to get full copyright for the title, faction names, webpages, ECT. Because of that I can't say the name. What I can say is that if you are a fan of command and conquer, supreme commander, and StarCraft, this game is a crazed lovechild taking inspiration from these and many more. I hope to have the legal process finished before the end of the year.
I still have at least 3 years left to go. It is a large project. But, I would be happy to try and find you and let you know more about it once the legal stuff is squared away and as the game gets closer to release!
Ah Operation Chrome Dome. My favorite “Fuck with me, I dare you” operation.
I swear the US had so many badass operation names back in the day.
Mine has to be Operation Paul Bunyan
I mean, there was that one operation, where the US sent out a couple of soldiers to cut down a tree in the DMZ between North and South Korea after US soldiers got attacked and murdered by Nork soldiers while pruning said tree. Some of the soldiers ordered to stand guard as the tree was cut down had Claymores strapped to their bellies, telling the Norks to come and get them. Also, there were bombers with nuclear arms on standby.
Didn't the Chrome Dome operation almost cause 2 thermonuclear bombs to blow up somewhere in the eastern coast?

Of all the facts that this man has said, THATS THE WINNER
To be fair to me it felt it was DICE and people connected to them screwing up Battlefield 5. But I give you 2042 being EAs fault as they could not decide if they wanted to make a Battle Royal style or a CoD clone and that ended up messing that game badly. Also adding those named player characters, ugh.

@@LadyWarmachine at this point we're better off without it. the reality will be worse than the dream.

Then there was Eastern Assult, where they upended it all...
And some of Michael Giacchino's finest work as a soundtrack composer. Chris Lennertz wasn't bad either on some of the other game versions.
@hardcharging
The title and main menu theme to Frontline was amazing.
3:28 I would love a Comand & Conquer Generals re make. Somehow it's almost 20 years old and yet the geopolitics in the game is still very relevant.
They have all c&c games on steam for like 15$ from tiberium sun to I think 4
@@habitual_linecrosser Fair warning for 4, last I heard the DRM server for it got shut down. They might have a replacement up, but it's 4 so I doubt that would be a priority.
Aside from that, Tib Dawn, Red Alert 1, and Tib Sun are all officially freeware, and there's launchers to get them running and keep them updated for free, along with some cool fan projects based on them (e.g. Twisted Insurrection).

I'm with you but I also don't know that I trust a Generals remake in 2024. EA: "So, Visceral, I know that Dead Space 3 would be perfect if we just follow the formula, but... We need a love triangle and micro transactions, a basic plot, and bad voice acting or we won't give you funding."
*10 years later*
"So... Motive... I know that Dead Space Remake blew our expectations and players' expectations out the water... But it didn't hit first week sales expectations so it's considered a failure.
