How Not to Tip, When to Tip, How Much to Tip
How did tipping get so confusing? The Cut, a New York magazine, recently published new guidelines for tipping and suggested a 20 percent gratuity, regardless of the level of service you received. Really, no Really!
The expansion of point-of-sale technology that prompts customers to tip at coffee shops and convenience stores has dramatically changed the way we perceive and engage with tipping. Should you now tip for a pack of gum or bottled water in situations where human interaction is minimal or non-existent? And just as tipping has gotten more confusing and uncomfortable, our tipping choices are prominently displayed on large swivel screens that invite others to scrutinize and judge.
To help Jason and Peter navigate and understand the new rules of tipping, they invited Michael Lynn, a professor of consumer behavior and marketing at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration to join them. He has been studying why and how Americans tip for decades.

really enjoyed it! Watching from Finland where tipping does not exist.
I couldn't imagine having to deal with this on a daily basis...luckily this isn't an issue in Australia/New Zealand.
tipping is such an ibteresting tipic...the part where peter said places moved away from paper to digital was a TIL (about the prices), cause like Jason, I thought it was more cause of touchless, COVID practices, etc. Never really thought about literal daily price fluctuations

Servers are TAXED on tips, whether they receive them or not! If you don’t want to tip, prepare your own meal or drink, provide a nice atmosphere & do the dishes yourself. ~Server prior to working for U.S. House of Representatives.

Growing up in the 70's my father said either 15% or double the tax, also never tip on the tax. When it changed to 20% or more kind of weird to me. Someone might say the cost of living although the cost of my meal for example has increased so the same 15% is more money. Anyways just my opinion.
The word TIP is an anagram for "To Insure Promptness". So any service that is provided that can be done more quickly for you individually, should get a tip. Because you're trying to insure something, part or all of tip is best given upfront if possible unless its a service in which they are familiar with you. When my grandfather paid the milkman, he always put a seperate envelope marked To Insure Promptness, which is why their street usually got milk first.
Most businesses that don't do tipping (fast food, etc) are at the owners request to minimize the guilt associated with patronizeing such an establishment . They prefer the kind of labor that is overworked and underpaid 😉.
When I get to share in the profits I'll share in the overhead. Until then it's ALL on the owner. Period.
I have no guilt tip if the service is good they get a good tip if the service is bad they either get no tip or very little I don't tip according to the taste of the food because it's not the server's fault
I still don’t know when to tip other than food delivery, bar tending, and non fast food restaurants. Other than that I don’t even think to tip, never have, didn’t know it was a thing until recent. But the tips at gas stations and fast food is ridiculous that they guilt you into that now days. IMO.
Wages are owner overhead. It's not the customer's responsibility to pay it. Either you can afford to pay your employees proper employee prices and you just do it or you can't and you have a failed business so shut her down. But in any instance get it straight - there is no pure profit business model. You spend money to make money. Or I will buy a house but not like to pay mortgage, utilities, insurance, property tax so I'll just send the bill to these restaurant owners. That'll be cool with them?
